Inglis has landed the first blow in the

    competitive auction house rivalry to

    acquire high-end breeding stock with

    confirmation that dual Group 1-winning

sprinter Pippie (Written Tycoon), a valuable

outcross mare, will be offered at this year’s

    Chairman’s Sale.

Gold Coast-based owner Glenn Heran has

committed to selling the Chris Meagher-trained

five-year-old after her brief late summer-autumn

campaign targeting two Group 1 sprint races on

    the eastern seaboard.

Ruling odds-on Inglis Millennium (RL, 1200m) favourite Profiteer will have a new majority owner when the Capitalist (Written Tycoon) colt runs in Saturday’s $2 million

juvenile race after Newgate Farm negotiated

a deal to buy into the son of its promising

    Golden Slipper-winning sire.

    Newgate Farm managing director Henry

Field late yesterday announced that the

Hunter Valley operation had agreed to terms

with Roll The Dice Racing to buy a controlling

interest in the Mick Price and Mick Kent Jr-

    trained colt.

Pippie is scheduled to run first-

up on February 13 in the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m)

at Flemington where she is set to take on Nature Strip (Nicconi) and

September Run (Exceed And Excel) prior to a trip to Sydney for The Galaxy

(Gr 1, 1100m) at Rosehill on March 20.

Sebastian Hutch, Inglis’ general manager of bloodstock sales, declared

Pippie, last year’s Oakleigh Plate (Gr 1, 1100m) and A J Moir Stakes (Gr 1,

1000m) winner, as a mare with a seven-figure price tag “every day of the week”.

“I think the Chairman’s sale has earned the right to catalogue mares of

    Pippie’s quality regularly,” Hutch said.

“People talk about wanting to see sales demonstrating themselves to

be consistent and reliable for the market and I think that is the epitome

of what the Chairman’s Sale is in terms of elite breeding stock and elite

    breeding prospects.

“You can bring stock (to Riverside Stables) and be confident that

there’s going to be a very strong buying bench and the stock are going to

make, arguably in the majority of cases, more than what they are worth

because of the emotion of an auction and that is what is fun about it.”

Pippie is by the same sire as this season’s MRC Thousand Guineas

(Gr 1, 1600m) winner Odeum (Written Tycoon) as well as Golden Rose

Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Caulfield Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) winner Ole Kirk

(Written Tycoon), Group 2-winning sprinter Dirty Work (Written Tycoon)

and progressive Group 3 winner Written Beauty (Written Tycoon).

Enthaar, a two-year-old filly by Written Tycoon (Iglesia), is also the

short-priced favourite for the Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and

Golden Slipper (Gr 1, 1200m) after her dominant first-up win in the

Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday to further

illustrate the current potency of the Arrowfield Stud-based stallion who

is the leading active Australian stallion this season with progeny prize-

money earnings of more than $10 million.

The high-balling sprinter, who showed dashing speed to win her two

Group 1s, was a $60,000 purchase by John Meagher from the 2017 Inglis

Classic Yearling Sale on behalf of Heran from the Eureka Stud draft.

“In somewhat timely fashion, she is a graduate of the Classic Yearling

Sale, so she has been a great demonstration of the quality that is available

for a value price,” Hutch said.

    Odds-on Inglis Millennium (RL,

    1200m) favourite Profiteer will

have a new majority owner when

    the Capitalist (Written Tycoon)

colt runs in Saturday’s $2 million juvenile race

after Newgate Farm negotiated a deal to buy

into the son of its promising Golden Slipper-

    winning sire.

    Newgate Farm managing director Henry

Field announced late yesterday that the Hunter

Valley operation had agreed to terms with Roll

The Dice Racing to buy a controlling interest in

the Mick Price and Mick Kent Jr-trained colt.

Profiteer, currently $1.90 to win the

Millennium with TAB, was a dominant winner

on debut at Flemington on December 12 which

led to immediate Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1,

1200m) and Slipper plans being put in place for

    the colt.

    Field indicated Profiteer’s visually

impressive first start was backed up by the clock

and ratings figures, which prompted he and his

partners to swoop on the colt.

“We have bought into Profiteer on a very

similar deal structure to what we did when we

purchased a stake in Extreme Choice prior to

his Blue Diamond coupe,” Field said.

    “Leading form analyst Daniel O'Sullivan,

who we work very closely with, was the reason

we purchased a stake in Extreme Choice at an

early stage and he was very encouraging of us

to do the same with Profiteer.

"We are currently in the process of

syndicating Profiteer amongst many of the

country's leading bloodstock investors with a

small amount left to place which we will finalise

    early this week.”

Profiteer is expected to return to Melbourne

after Saturday’s Millennium at Randwick for a

tilt at the Blue Diamond. The Golden Slipper is

also strongly on the radar of connections.

"We are rapt to be partnering with Newgate

in the ownership of Profiteer," Roll the Dice

    Racing director Leigh Saville said.

"It’s been a pleasure dealing with Henry

Field and the team, and we look forward to

growing this relationship. Profiteer was born

and raised at Newgate, and it will be great to see

him return home to join some of Australia’s best

    stallions."

Capitalist is already the sire of four first

crop two-year-old winners and has five stakes

horses to date, including the promising Forbes,

Gleneagles and Karaka Million (RL, 1200m)

runner-up Sneaky Shark, while Newgate is

also home to Extreme Choice (Not A Single

    Doubt) and another former Price-trained

Group 1-winning sprinter in Flying Artie (Artie

Schiller) who equally have made promising

    starts to their stud careers.

Profiteer, meanwhile, is the first named

foal out of the two-year-old-winning, Group

3-placed mare Athena Lass (Snitzel) who is a

three-quarter sister to dual Group 3 winner

Sweet Redemption and a half-sister to two-

    year-old Gibson Carmichael Stakes (Listed,

    1600m) winner Euryale (Lonhro).

Identified by Jeremy Rogers and Roll The

Dice when they paid $165,000 for him at the

2020 Inglis Classic Yearling Sale, Profiteer

is also from the same family as dual two-

year-old stakes winner Unite And Conquer

(Hinchinbrook), who stands at Newgate Farm

    shareholder Matthew Sandblom’s Kingstar

    Farm.

Newgate late last year also bought into

    Group 1-placed three-year-old Brazen Beau

(I Am Invincible) colt North Pacific whose

autumn return for Michael, Wayne and John

Hawkes is imminent after a pleasing barrier

trial win at Rosehill last Wednesday.

Price and Kent Jr also recently sold a share

in another talented two-year-old colt Extreme

Warrior (Extreme Choice) to Rosemont Stud.

Extreme Warrior, who was runner-up in the

Debutant Stakes (Listed, 1000m) in October,

ran another second in Tuesday’s Blue Diamond

Preview (C&G) (Listed, 1000m) at Caulfield.

    AUSTRALIA

Racing paused in WA after lockdown announcedRace meetings, trials and trackwork at licenced

venues in the Perth metropolitan area have

    been temporarily suspended following

    yesterday’s announcement of a five-day

lockdown by the WA government. The Perth

metropolitan area, along with the Peel and

south west regions, were put into lockdown

from 6pm yesterday after it was announced

that a security guard working at a quarantine

facility had tested positive for coronavirus. No

racing was planned for metropolitan WA this

week, but there were set to be trials today. There

are scheduled race meetings at Geraldton on

Wednesday, Albany on Thursday and Esperance

on Friday. Yesterday’s meeting at Bunbury

was abandoned after the third race, meaning

the Breeders’ Classic (Listed, 1400m) did not

take place. Further updates are expected to be

provided after a review of the situation takes

place tomorrow morning. In the meantime,

trainers located outside the lockdown regions

will still be able to access racetracks within

their respective areas for trackwork. The local

contact tracing team have compiled a list of

potential exposure sites where the positive case

has been in recent days, which can be viewed

here. People who have been to these venues on

the specified dates must attend a Covid clinic

    and get tested.

Magic Millions WA 2YOand 3YO fields releasedWith the WA lockdown currently scheduled

to end on Friday, the final fields for Saturday’s

meeting at Pinjarra Park, which features the

Magic Millions WA 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m)

and 3YO Trophy (RL, 1200m), have been

released. A maximum field of 14 is likely to

contest the $232,000 2YO Classic, with four

emergencies ready to replace any scratchings.

    Unbeaten fillies Sniparoochy (Snippetson)

and Michelada (Nicconi) are both interesting

runners and have drawn barrier three and

    nine respectively, while Heavenly Waters

(Headwater), the highest rated in the field at 66,

has been drawn wide in gate 13. Gemma’s Son

(Snippetson), comfortable winner of the 2YO

Classic a year ago, heads the 12-runner line-

up for the 3YO Trophy. Having earned almost

$580,000 in prize-money with his five victories

including a success in last year’s Perth Stakes

(Listed, 1100m), Gemma’s Son sits well clear

of his opposition on both ratings and earnings

and will break from barrier two. Surveillance

(Safeguard) (barrier seven), a five-time runner-

up including in last year’s 2YO Classic, will bid

to break his maiden at the ninth attempt, while

two-time winner Off Wego (Oratorio) (six) is

another notable runner having been off the

    track since September.

    Avalon handed Orr assignment

Australia Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) winner Streets

Of Avalon (Magnus) is set to contest Saturday’s

C F Orr Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) at Caulfield. The

    Futurity Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) a fortnight later, a

race which Streets Of Avalon won last year, had

been mooted as his next start, but trainer Shane

Nichols appears keen to strike while the iron

is hot. Zac Spain will retain the ride on the six-

year-old where he will go in search of his first

Group 1 win. A possible start in the Futurity will

be decided after the Orr for Streets Of Avalon,

who has nine wins from 53 career starts.

Werther on track for Autumn return

    The Danny O’Brien-tained Young Werther

(Tavistock) is set to make his first appearance

since finishing third behind Johnny Get Angry

(Tavistock) in the Victoria Derby (Gr 1, 2500m)

in October when he lines up in the Autumn

Stakes (Gr 3, 1400m) at Caulfield on Saturday.

    The lightly-raced three-year-old, who won a

Geelong maiden and finished runner-up in

the Super Impose Stakes (Listed, 1800m) on

his only other appearances, will be ridden

by Damien Oliver. His stablemate Russian

Camelot (Camelot), who won the Underwood

Stakes (Gr 1, 1800m) and placed in three other

Group 1s in the spring, is set to run first-up in

the All-Star Mile (1600m) at Moonee Valley on

    March 13.

Hayes date for PinkhamExciting filly Pinkham (Written Tycoon) is

set to make her raceday reappearance in the

Kevin Hayes Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield

on Saturday. The Mick Price and Michael Kent

    Jr-trained three-year-old impressed on debut

at Seymour in June, winning her 1000-metre

maiden by two and a half lengths. She then

reaffirmed her ability when taking out a

1000-metre Geelong trial by seven lengths on

Thursday, thrashing nine rivas in the process.

Pinkham is scheduled to take on stablemates

Sense Of Honour (Pride Of Dubai) - who has

also had a prolonged absence having not been

seen since winning in July - and last year’s

    Lightning Stakes (Listed, 1050m) winner

    Parlophone (I Am Invincible).

    Lane booked for Probabeel

Dual Group 1 winner Probabeel (Savabeel) is

on course to resume in the Geoffrey Bellmaine

Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) at Caulfield on Saturday

with Damian Lane taking the ride. Lane, who

rode last year’s Surround Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

winner for the first time in a Geelong trial on

Thursday, will also partner Humidor (Teofilo)

in the C F Orr Stakes and Miss Siska (So You

Think) in the Carlyon Cup (Gr 3, 1600m). Miss

Siska is due to take on Perth Cup (Gr 2, 2400m)

    winner Neufbosc (Mastercraftsman) in the

Carlyon Cup. The French import, who won

the Prix Du Lys (Gr 3, 2400m) in 2018, will be

partnered by Brad Parnham on Saturday.

Arcadia Queen readied for Melbourne returnArcadia Queen (Pierro), winner of the

Mackinnon Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) and Caulfield

Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in the spring, will

reappear in a trial at Belmont this morning.

All going well, the Grant and Alana Williams-

trained five-year-old will then line up at

Caulfield on February 20, ahead of a start in

the All-Star Mile the following month. The

popular mare sits atop the public vote for the

All-Star Mile, having amassed almost 6,800

votes last night, over 400 clear of second-

placed Behemoth (All Too Hard). The Chris

Waller-trained Verry Elleegant (Zed) has just

passed the 6,000 vote mark in third, while

    Greysful Glamour (Stratum), The Harrovian

(Fastnet Rock) and Russian Camelot sit fourth,

    fifth and sixth respectively.

Dame Giselle a possible Inglis Sprint runnerDame Giselle (I Am Invincible) could return

to action in Saturday’s $1 million Inglis Sprint

(RL, 1200m) at Warwick Farm. Winner of four

    Group 2 contests in 2020, the three-year-old

filly was last seen in competitive action when

finishing fourth in October’s Flight Stakes (Gr

1, 1600m). She produced an encouraging trial

performance last week when finishing third

behind Nature Strip (Nicconi) and Bivouac

(Exceed And Excel) and Peter and Paul

    Snowden will monitor conditions throughout

the week before making a final decision on

whether to run her. The Surround Stakes on

February 27 could be her first major target for

    the autumn.

Bowman impressed by Fortunate KissDaniel Bowman was delighted with Fortunate

    Kiss’s (Divine Prophet) third-placed finish

on debut in the Chairman’s Stakes (Gr 3,

1000m) at Caulfield on Saturday and believes

she could have the potential to challenge in

    October’s Thousand Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m).

The filly has already secured black type on her

pedigree report ahead of a potential career as

a broodmare and Bowman will be aiming to

make the most of her following her credible

effort behind Enthaar (Written Tycoon). “You

would think with natural progression she will

improve and might be the type of horse who

could aim for a Thousand Guineas,” Bowman

told Racing.com. “Her dad (Divine Prophet)

won a Caulfield Guineas and she’s out of a

Savabeel mare (Kiss Me Goodbye), so you

would think that could be up her alley.” On

his decision to line Fortunate Kiss up in the

Chairman’s Stakes on debut, Bowman added:

“They hadn’t kept it any secret where Enthaar

was going to kick-off and we knew a month

ago, so I thought that this race was going to

come up a bit light. A lot of horses need to win

their first start to get in the Blue Diamond and

we’re not nominated so it doesn’t bother us, so

I thought it might be a good chance to tick that

black type box at her first start. It doesn’t say

in the pedigree catalogue that there were only

five runners in the race, it just says ‘Group 3,

two-year-old, placed’. You look at who we have

run behind and it makes me think we’re going

to have a lot of fun with her.”

    Stewards back dead-heat call

Racing Victoria chief steward Robert Cram,

who was in charge of Saturday’s meeting at

Caulfield, has defended the decision of judge

Paul Egan to award the closing race a dead-

heat. Defibrillate (Shocking) and Hang Man

(Windsor Knot) hit the line together in the

1800-metre handicap and it took Egan several

minutes to make a decision, with some social

media users suggesting that Defibrillate may

have held a slight advantage after seeing an

image of the finish. “The judge has access to the

pure form of the digital image, it’s straight from

the camera to the computer, and it’s the purest

form without any pixelation or distortion,”

Cram said on RSN927’s Correct Weight. “What

you’re seeing on the TV monitors is not as

pure form of the image as what the judge has

available to him in the judge’s box.”

Victorian participant bubble endsToday’s meeting at Donald will be the first

Victorian meeting in almost a year where

the racecourse will not be separated under

    the industry’s biosecurity protocols, after

    the Victorian Covid-19 participant bubble

was brought to an end last night. However,

despite the removal of the participant bubble

there will be minimal change to the raceday

experience for attendees. There are currently

only four approved reasons for spectators

(which includes owners) to leave their

allocated racetrack seat - to eat, drink, place a

bet or use the restrooms – and these have not

changed. For owners this means that entry

to the mounting yard and visits to the tie-up

stalls currently remain prohibited. Away from

racedays, owners will once again be permitted

to attend trackwork now the participant bubble

    has ended.

Terry McAuliffe takes SATB Matrice awardRace-caller and host Terry McAuliffe received

the prestigious Matrice Award at the South

    Australian Thoroughbred Breeders awards on

Saturday night. The Matrice Award is an annual

recognition to horse or group for outstanding

contribution to the SA thoroughbred industry,

with C S Hayes, Makybe Diva and McAulliffe’s

    father-in-law, trainer Leon Macdonald, among

the previous recipients. “I’m so humbled by it

because the winners of the Matrice Award are

some of the all-time greats of racing in our state

whether they be horses or people,” McAuliffe

    told Racing.com. “It’s a massive honour and

totally unexpected. I went along to the night

not really wanting to be there because of Strath

races today and I had a pretty busy week, but

the wife convinced me to go and I did and it

    blew me away.”

Warning lands Horse Of The YearThe SATB award for 2019-20 Horse Of The

Year was taken out by Victoria Derby winner

Warning (Declaration Of War). The Anthony

    and Sam Freedman-trained gelding landed

the 2019 contest at Flemington by three and

a quarter lengths after winning the Super

Impose Stakes four weeks earlier. He has been

winless in ten subsequent appearances, which

included a third-placed finish in the SA Derby

(Gr 1, 2500m) last year, and was last seen

    finishing midfield in November’s Melbourne

    Cup (Gr 1, 3200m).

    NEW ZEALAND

Sinarahma set for another Group 1Although he enjoyed a wonderful day at Trentham

on Saturday, Allan Sharrock was left with a

niggling feeling of what might have been had

his promising mare Sinarahma (Darci Brahma)

jumped with the field in the Thorndon Mile (Gr

1, 1600m). The six-year-old managed to get within

a length and a quarter of eventual winner Melody

Belle (Commands) after missing the start by ten

lengths. “I’ve never in forty years seen a horse

miss the start by that much and still be in the

finish in a Group 1 race,” Sharrock said. “It was

an outstanding performance, probably a lifetime

best for her. She came back in afterwards and

she was heavily in season, so I think that explains

what happened in the barrier. Danielle (Johnson)

said she just sat back when the gates opened and

that was that. We copped a warning on her barrier

manners, but she doesn’t have to trial or anything

like that and I think it might just be a one-off at

the worst possible time.” Sharrock will now press

ahead to the Herbie Dyke Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) at

Te Rapa in a fortnight. “I’ve got no option but to

go to the Herbie Dyke now,” he said. “It won’t be a

big field and she would be a strong chance to run

second to the great mare (Melody Belle) again.”

Moore delighted with Bluey’s Chance’s effort$150 shot Bluey’s Chance (Remind) almost

pulled off one of the greatest upsets in Wellington

Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) history on Saturday when he

finished within a half-length of Waisake (Zed)

and trainer Kenny Moore was understandably

delighted with the performance of his seven-

year-old. Moore, who had earlier in the day

    produced $49 six-and-a-half-length maiden

    winner Amazon Goddess (Shamoline Warrior)

at Riccarton, said: “It was a pretty amazing day.

I was actually really confident of a good run as

long as he settled. We have two Bluey’s Chances

as if he is out in the open, he will pull his head

off but if he can get a good sit with some pace

on then almost nothing will outstay him. We

were just lucky that Mereana (Hudson) rode

an absolute pearler and got him to settle even

though he was in the open on the pace, where

he would normally just pull all the way. I don’t

think we could have asked for a better ride.”

El Tirador impresses at PukekoheEl Tirador (Shocking) provided a dashing display

at Pukekohe yesterday when he strode home

to defeat his three-year-old rivals over 1400

metres. The son of Shocking (Street Cry) made it

back-to-back victories after opening his winning

account at Ruakaka earlier in the month. Under

a confident ride by Sam Collett, the Nigel Tiley-

trained gelding finished three lengths clear of

    Opalescence (Showcasing), with Macs (Power)

another one and a quarter lengths back in third.

El Tirador holds a nomination for the New

Zealand Derby (Gr 1, 2400m) in March but Tiley

is not convinced that is a natural target for him.

“He still wants to go a little bit keen, but he was

very strong at the line today,” Tiley said. “Once he

got to the front and lengthened out, he was very

good and that is no slug (Opalescence) that he

has beaten. He is Derby nominated and they are

only three once, but at the moment a mile would

probably see him out. If he happened to win over

a mile and his owners wanted to have a crack at

the Derby then we’ve got nothing to lose.”

    ASIA

95 for TeofiloGlorious Dragon (6 g ex Tipperary Honor by

Highest Honor) brought up Teofilo’s (Galileo)

95th individual stakes winner yesterday when

he took out the Centenary Vase (Gr 3, 1800m)

at Sha Tin. The Francis Lui-trained gelding

avenged his defeat in the race last year by

reversing the placings with Exultant (Teofilo),

who finished a length and three quarters

behind in second. Favourite Furore (Pierro)

was a further neck behind in third. Darley’s

Teofilo, the sire of last year’s Melbourne Cup

(Gr 1, 3200m) winner Twilight Payment, will

stand at Kildangan Stud in Ireland for a fee of

    €30,000 (approx. AUD$47,650) in 2021.

19 for Union RagsThe highly tried Express Train (4 c ex I’m A Flake

by Mineshaft) provided his sire Union Rags

(Dixie Union) with his 19th individual stakes

winner when proving too smart for his rivals in

the San Pasqual Stakes (Gr 2, 9f) at Santa Anita

on Saturday. Already a runner-up in Grade 1

company, Express Train was winning for the third

time in eight starts when beating Tizamagician

(Tiznow) by three and a quarter lengths. Favourite

Idol (Curlin) was another neck behind in third.

Bred in Kentucky by Dixiana Farms out of the

    Mineshaft (A. P. Indy) mare I'm a Flake, Express

Train was a $500,000 purchase by Mayberry Farm

from the Lane's End consignment at the 2018

Keeneland September Yearling Sale and is the

first graded winner for his dam. His second dam,

November Snow (Storm Cat), won the Test Stakes

    (Gr 1, 7f) and Alabama Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) in 1992.

I'm a Flake foaled an Accelerate (Looking At Lucy)

colt in 2020. She was bred back to Union Rags for

Medina Spirit (3 c ex Mongolian Changa by

Brilliant Speed) came out on top in a tight

finish to the Robert B Lewis Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f)

at Santa Anita on Saturday. Now the winner of

two races from three starts, Medina Spirit edged

out Roman Centurion (Empire Maker) and Hot

Rod Charlie (Oxbow) by a neck and a nose.

Bred in Florida by Gail Rice, Medina Spirit was

a $35,000 purchase by bloodstock agent Gary

Young for owner Zedan Racing Stables from

Ocala last year. Medina Spirit became not only

the first black type winner for Clark Handicap

(Gr 1, 9f) runner-up Protonico but also for

his dam Mongolian Changa (Brilliant Speed).

Protonico stands at Castleton Lyons for a fee of

    $5,000 (approx. AUD$6,540).

141 for TapitGreatest Honour (3 c ex Tiffany’s Honour by Street

Cry) emerged as a genuine contender for the

Kentucky Derby (Gr 1, 10f) when he slammed his

rivals in Holy Bull Stakes (Gr 3, 8.5f) at Gulfstream

on Saturday, a victory which provided his sire Tapit

(Pulpit) with his 141st individual stakes winner.

Stepping up in grade after a maiden victory over

the same track and trip last start, Greatest Honour

finished five and three-quarter lengths in front

of his nearest pursuer Tarantino (Pioneerof The

Nile). Favourite Prime Factor (Quality Road) was

a further three and three-quarter lengths adrift in

a well stretched out field. Greatest Honour’s dam

Tiffany's Honour (Street Cry) is a half sister to the

Belmont Stakes (Gr 1, 10f) winners Rags to Riches

    (A. P. Indy) and Jazil (Seeking The Gold). Tapit

stands at Gainesway for a fee of $185,000 (approx.

    AUD$242,100).

76 for Street SenseShadwell homebred Zaajel (3 f ex Asiya by

Daaher) became the 76th individual stakes

winner for Street Sense (Street Cry) when she

stretched her unbeaten record to two with

victory in the Forward Gal Stakes (Gr 3, 7f) at

Gulfstream on Saturday. A runaway winner

on her debut at the same venue in December,

Zaajel stayed on strongly to beat Lady Traveler

(Quality Road) by a length and a quarter with

    Wholebodemeister (Bodemeister) another half

a length away in third. Bred in Kentucky out of

the winning mare Asiya (Daaher), Zaajel is a half

sister to Grade 2 runner up Ajaaweed (Curlin).

Her dam has produced four winners from four

starters, with Zaajel being her first graded

winner. Street Sense stands at Darley’s US base

    for a fee of $60,000 (approx. AUD$78,500).

Three for Power BrokerAmerican Power (6 h ex Catch The Spirit by

Fusaichi Pegasus) kept his winning run going

with a victory in the Toboggan Stakes (Gr 3, 7f)

at Aqueduct on Saturday which provided his sire

Power Broker (Pulpit) with a third stakes winner.

The six-year-old was winning for the tenth time

in 29 starts as he marked his return to stakes

company for the first time in more than a year

by beating Pete’s Play Call (Munnings) by half a

length. Favourite Share The Ride (Candy Ride)

was another two and three-quarter lengths away

in third. Bred in Kentucky by Gary and Mary West

Stables, American Power is the first stakes winner

out of the Fusaichi Pegasus (Mr. Prospector) mare

Catch the Spirit. Grade 1 winner Power Broker

was sold to Saudi Arabia in 2018.

First for Jess’s Dream Jess’s Dream (Curlin), the first foal out of the

    brilliant Rachel Alexandra (Medaglia D’Oro),

registered a first of his own on Saturday when

a victory by Chess’s Dream (3 c ex Achalaya by

Bellamy Road) in the Kitten’s Joy Stakes (Gr 3,

1m) on the Gulfstream turf provided him with

his breakthrough stakes winner. Chess’s Dream

made it two wins in five starts when downing

the hot favourite Never Surprised (Constitution)

who just edged out Original (Quality Road) in

the battle for second. He is the second stakes

winner out of the Bellamy Road (Concerto) mare

Achalaya. Jess’s Dream stands at Ocala Stud for a

    fee of $4,000 (approx. AUD$5,265).

95 for Candy RideThe step up into graded company proved no

problem to White Frost (3 f ex Miss Frost by

Curlin) as she took out the Sweetest Charm

Stakes (Gr 3, 1m) on the Gulfstream turf on

Saturday and in the process provided Candy

Ride (Ride The Rails) with his 95th individual

    stakes winner. Gainesway Stable's homebred

posted her second win in four starts as she

beat Con Lima (Commissioner) and Domain

Expertise (KItten’s Joy) by a length and the

same. White Frost is the second foal out of the

    multiple stakes-winning Curlin (Smart Strike)

mare Miss Frost, whose first foal is multiple

stakes-placed Torres Del Paine (Karakontie ).

Miss Frost is also dam of a two-year-old Union

Rags colt, a yearling Empire Maker (Unbridled)

colt and was bred to Frosted (Tapit) for 2021.

Candy Ride stands at Lane’s End for a fee of

has flown the Irish flag with great pride for more

than two decades, raising equine champions

such as Fairway (Danzeno) and Melbourne Cup

(Gr 1, 3200m) hero Efficient (Zabeel), as well

as welcoming and nurturing many young and

emerging Irish breeders who made their way to

the country. In receiving the award, he said: "I

know what the Aga Khan means to Irish breeding

and his support in racing and breeding over the

years and it’s a great honour for me to receive

an award that has been sponsored by him. I

know that there’s so many people like myself all

    Glorious Dragon (Teofilo) avenged

defeat in last year’s running of Sha

    Tin’s Centenary Vase Handicap

(Gr 3, 1800m) by denying Exultant

(Teofilo) a third win in yesterday’s staying feature

while at the same time delivering Matthew Poon

one of the most important triumphs of his career.

Beaten by Tony Cruz’s Exultant in the same

race 12 months earlier, Glorious Dragon swept

past the reigning champion under Poon’s urgings

to succeed by one and three quarter lengths with

Furore (Pierro) a further neck away in third place.

The authority of the victory delighted trainer

Francis Lui after the grey was narrowly defeated

by Savvy Nine (Anodin) in the January Cup

Handicap (Gr 3, 1800m) two starts ago.

“I am very happy to win this race because I

targeted both of the last Group 3 races for him,”

    Lui said.

“The last time he got a bad draw (10), I

thought he would have finished much closer if he

managed to get in where we wanted, this time he

had a light weight and it all worked out.

“He has a few leg problems so we had to take

it easy with him, early in the season I tried to work

him but he wasn’t ready so we gave him more

    time, he is OK now.”

Lui will consider a tilt at the Citi Hong Kong

Gold Cup (Gr 1, 2000m) at Sha Tin on 21 February.

“We don’t have much choice with him now,

we will think about the Gold Cup if he pulls up

    well.” Lui said.

Poon, 27, inherited the ride from Zac Purton

on Glorious Dragon because the gelding was

allotted just 113lbs and was elated to add a

third Group 3 in Hong Kong to those previously

collected on Jolly Banner (Lonhro) in the 2019

Bauhinia Sprint Trophy (Gr 3, 1000m) and the

    2020 Premier Cup (Gr 3, 1400m).

    Purton finished second aboard Exultant.

“I’m pretty lucky I could jump on him,” Poon

    said of Glorious Dragon.

“Last time at Happy Valley, he ran good and

he was even fitter today and I think I was getting

on him at the right time.

“From the draw (2) today, he followed the

favourite and we had the perfect run.

“I think he’s got some class and I hope he can

challenge for a Group 1 or Group 2 this season.”

The win was Poon’s 13th for the season – and

    clearly the most significant.

“I feel extremely happy because this win is

proof that I can handle it and I’m also able to ride

at a light weight so I’m very thankful to Francis for

giving me a nice ride,” he said.

“Francis has given me a lot of support this

season and this horse definitely has a lot of class.”

Tony Cruz, fresh from a treble at Happy Valley

on Wednesday, notched a double with Galaxy

Emperor (Verrazano) scoring in the Class 5 Aldrich

Bay Handicap (1400m) under Joao Moreira before

prevailing again with Beauty Smile (Free Eagle) in

the Class 2 Tathong Channel Handicap (1400m).

Formerly known as Justifier when trained in

Ireland to Listed success by Ger Lyons, Beauty Smile

was given a wonderful ride by Matthew Chadwick to

    collect a HK$1 million (approx. AUD$168,775) high

    achievement bonus for connections.

Chadwick sealed his third double of the

season by partnering the Paul O’Sullivan-trained

Casimiro (Casamento) to narrow victory in the

Class 3 Siu Sai Wan Handicap (1600m) for the

gelding’s third success for the 2020/21 term.

John Size was upbeat after the heavily-backed

Fantastic Way (Swiss Ace) saluted for Moreira in

the Class 4 Shau Kei Wan Handicap (1200m).

“He’s still a bit young, he looked a bit young in

the parade ring, just a little bit immature but he’s

educated pretty well and hasn’t been too much

trouble,” Size said of the Australian import.

“Plenty of good signs and the fact he’s a

little bit immature is good for the future anyway.

Maybe not quite tough enough to go to Class 3,

    but I’ll see.

“It makes it more interesting to get the young

ones to the races and they can perform well and

you can start to imagine they have a future.

    “It’s gratifying.

Moreira finished the meeting with a treble,

also prevailing on Galaxy Emperor for Cruz before

clinching the Class 2 Victoria Harbour Handicap

(1200m) aboard Beauty Applause (Stratum) for Size.

Size’s double left him just two wins adrift – 37-39

    – of Caspar Fownes in the trainers’ championship,

while Moreira boosted his tally to 80, 25 ahead of

    reigning champion jockey Purton (55).

Chris So’s faith in Jerry Chau was vindicated

when the apprentice guided Sunny Boy (Star

Witness) to victory in the Class 3 Tai Tam Bay

    Handicap (1200m) on the dirt.

“Jerry wanted the ride and he had the (7lb)

claim and he rode the horse perfectly,” So said.

“We wanted him to jump clean, to take a hold and

    then come with a sprint.

“It was a great ride and a great result.”
