“Race for Water”, an ambassador

At a glance

— The MOD 70 Race for Water will be skippered by the Swiss Stève Ravussin, the talented sailor, Jules Verne Trophy holder and win-ner of numerous transatlantic races.

— Stève Ravussin will be surrounded by a highly experienced sailing and technical team.

— The MOD70 Race for Water is the ambassador boat for the Multi One Attitude Foundation, created in parallel to the new trimaran circuit. The Foundation is using this platform to raise global awa-reness on two key water challenges: Ocean Preservation and Water Footprint.

— The Lausanne University of Art and Design, ECAL, has designed the graphics for the MOD70 Race for Water, the first of the one-design MOD70 series of trimarans.

— Children are an important target for the Foundation; they will help to carry out the Foundation’s actions. That is why the children have been chosen as godparents of the ambassador boat Race for Water. The Franco-Swiss actress Anne Richard will represent them at the christe-ning of the boat on March 25th.

“One of the missions of the Foundation is to attract young people. First we have elaborated an educational program for kids with Titeuf as a main character. Then, we have initiated a collaborative program with schools and universities. it seemed natural to me to involve the ECAL, one of the best design schools in the world, in the graphic design of the boat!”

the ecAL signs the graphic design of the “Race for Water”

Stève Ravussin and Pierre keller, Director of the ECAL, have been close friends for years. The two strong personalities like to meet informally, both being known not only for their impe-tuous character and their talent, but also for their taste for good food. Therefore while Stève Ravussin was explaining his new project, he naturally proposed to Pierre keller to get involved in the project, by asking the ECAL students to work on the graphic design of his new boat.

Founded in 1821, the University of art and design Lausanne (ECAL) is recognized as one of the best art schools in the world. The ECAL students and former students are regularly rewarded by prestigious prices in particular in the fields of graphics, design, cinema, visual arts or photography.

The graphic design has been chosen after an internal competition. it was created by Romain Collaud (born in 1988 in Saint-Aubin, canton de Fribourg), in close collaboration with Stève Ravussin and Marco Simeoni, Multi One Attitude Foundation President. Romain Collaud is doing his bachelor in graphic Design at the University of art and design Lausanne (ECAL). his project was supervised by Pierre keller, Director, Alexis georgacopoulos, in charge of the Master in Product Design, and Vincent Jacquier, in charge of the Visual Communication Department. Romain Collaud has been invited to the official christening of the MOD70 nr 1 “Race for Water”.

Godfathers and godmothers… Stève Ravussin and Marco Simeoni, President of the Foundation Multi One Attitude, have decided that the children should be the godfathers and the godmothers of the Foundation’s ambassador trimaran. Representing them, a voice and a face known by many, the actress Anne Richard. She will be present on March 25 to christen the “Race for Water”.

Born in Lausanne, Anne Richard has been pursuing a brilliant acting career for nearly 20 years. The public usually knows her for her role as a judge that she has been playing for 12 years in the series « boulevard du Palais », on France 2, but also for a number of other roles at the theatre and in the film.

Anne Richard is also a marvellous children’s tales author. She has already issued two CD, sold by thousands units, where she tells children stories, already known or written by her. her last album was launched in March. She is also working on a new movie, « Le nez dans le Ruisseau », paying the main female role, at the side of Sami Frey.

Marco Simeoni, Multi One Design SA ceO and President of the Multi One Attitude foundation explains:“Any eco-responsible project should be supported by an impact study. indeed, if we want to preserve the planet, it is a necessity to know the consequences of our actions on the environment and find solutions to make up for them.”

Boat lifecycle analysis

For the ambassador boat of a foundation that is working for the water preservation, it has been a foundamental move to start by analysing its own impacts on the environment.The lifecycle analysis is a methodology commonly used to assess the environmental impact of products or companies. The life cycle of a product refers to the entire life of a product, from the extraction of the raw materials until the elimination of the product (recycling, incineration, etc), through the phases of manufacturing, logistics and utilisation.Quantis international has performed this study for the MOD70 circuit. The study has been focussing on the analysis of the MOD70 environmental impact, concentrating on the fol-lowing impact categories: global warming, associated to the greenhouse gas emissions, the resources, this indicator taking into account the consumption of non-renewable primary energy (or grey energy) and ores extraction, and water footprint.The results are showing that thanks to the one-design concept and to the long-life circuit (10 years programme), the impact of the construction, the most harmful category for the envi-ronment, is limited and relatively reduced compared to other racing boats. This is due to the fact that the tooling (equipment), which counts for an important consumption of composite material is re-used for the construction of the entire series of the 12 MOD70 multihulls (and not rebuilt for each boat). Then, only one sailing boat is used for high level competition during 10 years (unlike the majority of the other competition boats). The results are also showing that the events around the championship are potentially impac-ting the environment the most. it is therefore on those aspects that Multi One Design and the Multi One Attitude Foundation are committing to act, in order to reduce the impacts.

Swiss skipper of international reputation, Stève Ravussin is a lover of speed. he developed his passion for sailing and especially for multihulls, after initially sailing with Laurent bourgnon and then with Franck Cammas, while also pursuing a career as a solo sailor.born in Lausanne in 1968, Stève Ravussin has two brothers, including multihull sailor yvan, and one sister, with whom he is very close. he carried out his apprenticeship as a mechanic with bobst - knowledge that subsequently proved valuable in preparing and repairing the boats he worked on.

he is known for his passion and endless energy, his loyal friends (among them Laurent bourgnon, Jean Troillet, Mike horn, Franck Cammas), his strong character, his outspokenness and his taste for speed and extreme sports: mountain and the sea are two environ-ments that suit him perfectly, his pastimes including skiing, snow-boarding, kiteboarding, windsurfing – the first sport where he started competing.A talented sailor, he won the 40ft multihull class in the Route du Rhum in 1998 and the Transat Jacques Vabre in both 2001 and 2007. he holds the speed record for the crossing of the Mediterranean and the Atlantic crossing in 2007 aboard groupama 3 and went on to win the Jules Verne Trophy in 2010 alongside Franck Cammas, as watch leader and helmsman.Since 2009 he has sailed on Veltigroup, the D35 of Marco Simeoni, whom he met in Lausanne and transmitted the virus of competitive sailing. in 2008, he met Marco who was seeking advice about the pur-chase of a new cruiseship. Benoît Lequin has extensive experience running the technical side of offshore raceboats. After working on several iMOCA and ORMA 60s, including bernard Stamm’s, he has been a project manager and director of a shipyard. As sailor, he has considerable singlehanded experience, especially in the Figaro. he also spent a season racing ORMA 60 trimarans finishing second in the nokia Oops Cup with klabbe nylöf.

Above all, he holds two extraordinary records, namely that for the crossing of the north Atlantic (new york - Lorient) aboard a 20ft catamaran in a time of 18 days and 18 hours (2009) and the outright record for the Atlantic crossing (11 days 11 hours) in an uninhabitable 20ft catamaran (Dakar - Pointe a Pitre) in 2008. benoît Lequin will be responsible for the boat, particular-ly during deliveries, will handle her logistics.

Sailmaker at incidences alongside Jean-Baptiste Le Vaillant, then at north Sails, Jacques guichard has since 2002 designed sails for significant boats such as banque Populaire 1 & 2, groupama 1 & 2, gitana 10 & 11, Veolia, Safran, America's Cup pro-jects and even L’hydroptère.Jacques guichard is also an outstanding sailor. From 2003 to 2009, he sailed on the ORMA and iMOCA circuits, including two consecutive years on gitana 10. Jacques

guichard also sails on Lake geneva aboard the D35 Foncia on which he won the bol d'Or in 2009 with Michel Desjoyeaux and Alain gautier. Jacques will be part of the crew of Race for Water as a trimmer.

Loïc is a Swiss sailor and a great specialist of Lake Geneva. A D35 helmsman since 2007, he won the bol d'Or in 2008. Winner of the Cinq Jours du Léman in 2009, he became part of the CER crew in the Tour de France a la Voile, finishing second in 2010. he will be both shore crew for the boat and will sail on board as well.

The departure and the arrival are at Sandhamn, in an archipelago off Stockholm. The regatta gathers each year nearly 300 boats and a large public.

FaStnet Race (GReat BRitain)The Fastnet Race is a mythical race between Cowes (island of Wight, in the south of great britain) and Plymouth, passing by the Fastnet Rock lighthouse, in the sea of ireland. This 605 miles long regatta was created in 1925. it is probably one of the most difficult races that the sailing world accounts.

About the Multi One Attitude FoundationThe defining sustainable development challenge of the 21st century will almost certainly be water. But both the causes and consequences of the many humanitarian and environmental issues connected to water scarcity and the disruption of ocean ecosystems are less well understood than other areas of sustainable development. As a result, there is also less public, corporate and political engagement with many of the issues.

Ocean Preservation

The Great Pacific Garbage Patch, also described as the Pacific Trash Vortex, is a gyre of about 100 million tonnes of marine litter in the central North Pacific Ocean. The patch extends over a very wide area, which some scientists estimate to be more than twice the size of the continental united States. Recent researches have also identified plastic gyres in the Atlantic Ocean and in the Mediterranean Sea.

While larger items can be found in these areas, along with other debris such as abandoned fishing nets, much of the litter is actually small bits of floating plastic debris – microplastics – that are difficult to see with the naked eye. These tiny pieces of plastic, smaller than five millimeters in length, are formed as a consequence of bigger pieces of plastic broken down over time by things like waves and sunlight.

The effects of plastic waste on marine ecosystemsThe global production of plastic has increased by over 500% during the last thirty years. In North America and Western Europe each person now uses around 100kg of plastic materials annually- this is likely to increase to 140kg by 2015. People in rapidly developing countries in Asia each use around 20kg of plastic per year — this is set to grow to about 36kg by 2015.

The effect of the rapid and continued growth of plastic consumption on the world’s ocean systems was discovered by oceanographer Charles Moore, on a voyage across the Pacific in 1997. He sailed through an area

known as the doldrums - usually avoided by sailors - and found himself in what he later described as “The Great Pacific Garbage Patch”.

Following his discovery, many marine scientists and oceanographers, including Charles Moore, have started to measure the damaging effects of plastic waste on the oceans. As described in the united Nations Environment Programme (uNEP) Yearbook 2011, to date, more than 260 species are reported to have been entangled in, or to have ingested, marine debris. A recent study of plankton eating fish from the North Pacific gyre found an average of 2.1 plastic items inside each fish. According to the uNEP, plastic debris causes the deaths of more than a million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals.

The uNEP report cites a study investigating plastic pollution, which found that as plastic waste decomposed, it also releases potentially toxic chemi-cals such as bisphenol A (BPA) and PS oligomer into the water, causing additional pollution and a threat to human and ecosystem health.

Initiatives to reduce the effects of plastic pollution

While more information is clearly required about the effects of plastic waste on marine ecosystems and human health, governments, busi-nesses and NGOs are already starting to tackle the problem of plastic pollution. In 2008, the Chinese government banned the production of the ultra-thin plastic bags handed out free by supermarkets. Prior to the ban, an estimated 3 billion plastic bags were used every day in China, creating an estimated 3 million tonnes of waste each year. Discarded plastic bags were commonly found in waterways, on beaches, and in other «unofficial» dumping sites across China. So common was this kind of waste that a special term emerged: white pollution.

China is not the only government to ban or restrict plastic bag use. Countries such as Australia Rwanda, Bhutan, Bangladesh, Italy and cities including San Francisco and Mumbai have also restricted plastic bags by law. France, which had been slow in adopting consumer plastic reduc-tion measures, has now given the go-ahead for a ‘plastic tax’ to take effect in 2014.

THE CONSEQUENCE — Water stress - water resources that are no longer sufficient for the global population’s needs.

— At the same time the total amount of avail-able freshwater supply is decreasing because of climate change, which has caused reced-ing glaciers, reduced stream and river flow, and shrinking lakes. Many aquifers have been over-pumped and are not recharging quickly. Much of the remaining freshwater supply has also become polluted, salted, unsuitable or otherwise unavailable for drinking, industry and agriculture.

A potential global water crisisEconomic development combined with population growth means that we are consuming more water today than ever before. Global popula-tion growth is set to rise from 6.7 billion today to over 9 billion in 2050. This expansion in population will place a higher demand on resources available, particularly for agriculture and the provision of food. The uN World Water Development Report estimated that over 70% of global fresh-water withdrawals are used for this purpose.

A further complication is that freshwater is not distributed evenly across the globe. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the united Nations (FAO) reports that nine countries account for 60% of global freshwater - while within countries there are often significant variations in regional rainfall levels.

More than one-sixth of the world’s population live in glacier or snowmelt-fed river basins and will be affected by the seasonal shift in stream flow, an increase in the ratio of winter to annual flows, and possibly the reduc-tion in low flows caused by decreased glacier extent or snow water stor-age. At the same time, sea-level rises attributable to climate change will

To date, the primary role of NGOs has been to raise awareness of the problems associated with plastic pollution. In 2010 the Plastiki, a 60 foot catamaran made of 12,500 reclaimed plastic bottles and other recycled PET plastic and waste products, sailed from San Francisco to Sydney to raise awareness of plastic in the ocean.

Water Footprint A “Water Footprint” is the total volume of freshwater used by an indi-vidual or community or used by a business. But only around 10% of water consumption is from domestic use. The biggest water footprints are hid-den in the products we consumer everyday. For example, it takes around 16,000 litres of water to make 1kg beef and around 1,000 litres of water to make 1 litre of milk.

extend areas of salinisation of groundwater and estuaries, resulting in a decrease in freshwater availability for people and ecosystems in coastal areas.

Water stress already creates devastating consequences for the approxi-mately 1.1 billion people worldwide that do not have access to clean drinking water. As reported by The Water Project, in developing countries, about 80% of illnesses are linked to poor water and sanitation conditions. NGOs have argued for some time that there will be mass migration away from areas of severe water scarcity, across Africa and Asia.

Understanding the Water FootprintThe phrase “carbon footprint” has entered common parlance in European markets, even among non-green audiences. However, for most people and even many businesses, the concept of ‘water foot-print’ is still unheard of.

As explained by Arjen Hoekstra in The Environmentalist, the water footprint of a business is measured in two parts: the company’s opera-tions and its supply chain. The first measurement looks at the direct freshwater use – the amount of freshwater used within the business itself and as part of its day-to-day operations. The supply chain water footprint refers to the indirect freshwater use – the water used by suppliers to produce all the goods and services that form the input of the business.

Generally, a water footprint carries three components: blue, green and grey. The blue water footprint is the volume of freshwater evaporated from the global blue water resources (surface and ground water). The green water footprint is the volume of water evaporated from the global green water resources (rainwater stored in the soil). The grey water footprint is the volume of polluted water associated with the production of goods and services.

Race for Water: A powerful challenge to raise public awareness

Education: A special appearance from Titeuf

On 21 March 2011, the Multi One Attitude Foundation will launch a specially designed education program for children aged 5-15, with one-day event hosted in partnership with La Cité de la Voile Eric Tabarly. The day will educate children on water resources and in the conservation of the oceans, through the discovery and exploration of the nautical environment.To support this education program, and get even more children inter-ested and engaged in water sustainability issues, world-famous cartoonist Zep is specially designing a new illustration, for the Multi One Attitude Foundation. The new creation will feature as part of the phenomenally successful Titeuf series, which has sold over 11 million copies worldwide and been translated into 15 languages. Titeuf, who is adored by children and adults alike, will capture the imagination of a broad target audience on water sustainability issues and be a key part of the Foundation’s communication activities.

of our mission. The boat named « Race for Water » will be the mes-senger of the Multi One Attitude Foundation”, says President of the Multi One Attitude Foundation, Marco Simeoni. “The boat will be used as a means of communication. We will organize events for water preservation aiming businesses, schools and children alike.“ He adds:“ Internationally renowned skipper, Stève Ravussin is loved for his charisma as for his good contact with the public. He’ll be himself a great ambassador for our mission!”

The MOD70: a reliable state of the art race boat State of the art, performance, safety, reliability and controlled costs are the essence of the Multi One Design concept. The MOD70 will be the leading offshore multihull for the next 10 years.

Racing boats without compromise, the MOD70s are constructed in carbon fibre, a material known for its extreme light weight and strength. Building a series of 12 identical boats has significantly reduced the impact on the environment, particularly in the construc-tion of the tooling. Plus an emphasis on longevity has required the boat to be stronger and more reliable and this also reduces the envi-ronmental impacts of on-going maintenance.

The Multi One Championship: a fantastic programme

The Multi One Championship combines sport, spectacle, suspense and sustainability within the heart of the world’s greatest cities. It brings together the adventure of oceanic races with the tension of the regattas held within easy view of the public.The Multi One Attitude Foundation is associated to the Multi One Championship to go around the world and generate public aware-ness on the water preservation in a sports context as much sustain-able as possible.The “Race for Water” MOD70 will be on the starting line of each event to race on an equal footing with the MOD70 competitors, whether on ocean races or on close to the public regattas.

The Multi One Attitude Pavilion at the heart of the race village

At each stopover, Multi One Design will build a race village respect-ing the best sustainability practice, open to the public and yacht rac-ing enthusiasts and those interested in the environment alike. Every aspect of the race village will be studied to make sure it is as much eco-responsible as possible in terms of energy, recycling, materials, and transport.In its center, the race village will host the Multi One Attitude Pavilion, a space dedicated to the mission of the Foundation: bringing people together to solve water sustainability issues. One part of the Pavilion will be dedicated to the activities for the kids, with educational and playful workshops, with Titeuf, key character of the Foundation.Another part of the Pavilion will be dedicated to associations and entrepreneurs (start-ups) that will present projects in relation with water sustainability.

SafetyThe MOD 70 is an offshore trimaran sailed by a crew of six. Compared to an ORMA 60 it has less sail area and a shorter mast, enabling sail to be reduced later when the wind rises. Its central hull is longer at 70ft, increasing buoyancy forward and reducing the risk of capsize.

Performance and state of the artAffecting safety and performance, the foils and mast both cant. This represents a significant speed bonus and is one of the latest innova-tions in multihull design.

Reliability and durabilityConstruction of the MOD 70 is based on trimaran engineering concepts that have been proven for more than a decade: low tem-perature pre-preg, carbon/foam sandwich, the mast in monolithic with a high safety co-efficient – these aspects will increase the longevity of the fleet.

Cost controlA strict one design rule controlling the platform, sails, electronics, etc both improves longevity and limits the cost of design, construction and maintenance.
