From the President
Ok, I started writing this in April and now it’s June, good
grief, where does the time go. As long as you didn’t get
scammed by an April fool’s joke then things are looking
good. The first round of the state series was run at
Sandown with high temperatures and smoke from the
bush fires. We had an oversubscribed grid consisting of
about 30 overs and 10 unders. Luke Grech-Cumbo being
very consistent and rebuilding an engine after Friday
practice (yes just like last year) but still managed to take
out the Overs and Stephen Zourkas taking out the Unders.
With some very close racing and very hot cars, all must be
congratulated for a great event. In case you didn’t know,
all of the categories put forward a donation to buy all the
flaggies and fire marshalls extra drinks for our
appreciation for standing out in the heat. A big thank you
must go out to all the officials for well just being there and
more importantly doing a great job.
It's now a couple of weeks down the path - yes it takes
me that long to right this up (not my strong area) and
Phillip Island has been run and won with Luke taking home
the chocolates again in the Overs and Stephen also taking
home some chockies in his victory in the Unders. With
forty cars on the grid it was a great weekend. Again, it’s
great to see IPRA Vic is still consistent with good entry
numbers at state rounds.
Just want to bring up a subject about safety around the
pits, yes I can see you all rolling your eyes back into your
head muttering “here we go again in this over policed
world we live in”, but this is more just a heads up at this
stage. The powers that be are concerned about the way
some people are getting their cars on and off trailers - we
have all seen it before - the guy that has the bricks and jack
stands balancing the car/trailer and race car on a knife
edge and cringing whilst waiting for something to happen.
These are not the only concerns from the powers above –
it’s also the big rigs with the big trucks that have tail gates
with cars on them that are not always secure and it’s only
going to be a matter of time until we have an accident in
this area. You know what that will mean - loading docks,
high vis jackets, cones, team members watching nobody
wants this, it will just a big pain in the arse, so to all, please
be careful out there and make sure that you have a safe
system for loading and unloading and hopefully things will
stay the same as they are now.
A reminder to all about the upcoming Nationals being
hosted at Baskerville Tasmania on 15 – 17 November. An
expression of interest form is available by going to
http://ipraaus.com.au/ and Facebook updates are also
being posted on 2019 IPRA Nationals page. Recent
announcements have included a 5% discount on the Spirit
of Tasmania for vehicle transport and a private practice
day being held at Symmons Plains on Monday
18/11/2019. We hope to see many of our IP Vic members
heading across for the event.
Cheers
Pistons Rule!

From the editor
Hi Everyone!
Back from Perth after a year long assignment, and the old body is struggling to get up to ‘temp’! Geez it’s been cold! Clearly the weather was a highlight of our time in WA, and we will miss it. One thing I won’t miss are the drivers. It’s a bit like the opposite to Melbourne – people are quite courteous and cautious. Felt much safer on my motorbike. However… oh they can be frustrating which they openly admit to. Number one key issue with Perth drivers is merging – they just don’t. What you do is fly down the entry ramp, put your blinker on, then near stop. Or, make it look like you’re going to merge, but decide at last minute it’s not safe, so you backout, turn the blinker off, then realise you have no more track and veer into the traffic anyway. Another one is the sun. I drove on the Mitchell Freeway home each night from the office, and if it was a sunny day, you would
be flying along at the posted 80 to then be hit with 1000s of brake lights. The reason? The sun is in their eyes. So, you brake suddenly, and do 40k’s until you get the visor down, find your sunnies, etc. Did my head in. Rain? Automatically take 20-30 k’s off the dial for that, as the road could be slippery. The traffic lights don’t help either. Most are not sensing traffic and changing to suit. So, you will hit a red light, then sit there for 4-5 minutes. Long enough for Taxi drivers to fall asleep! No joke. Then in that time, no one has actually crossed through the intersection. It’s a complete waste of time. Turn left anytime with care? Nope. You need a turn left arrow which might flash every ten minutes. I can go on….
The magazine is a combo of Autumn and Winter sorry. The first 3 rounds come and went at a pace I couldn’t process. Have included a tech article on tank engines. Tank engines you say? Well, you will see the Yanks built some weird things in the war other than bombs. Unfortunately, we don’t have detailed race reports for the round 2 and 3. Instead I have included round reviews. Stay safe everyone. On and off the track.

Unfortunately, there is an increasing trend in the number of penalties given to IPRA members in 2019 which does not
reflect well on our Club and class. Something to be conscious of as we head towards Sandown.

Race Reports
Up the Guts Tour to Darwin
Well, what can I say, what a trip!
Everything, from the preparation
leading up to the event, the drive up
and the racing was BIG. This all started
with two pissed mates standing in
front of a BBQ when one gets this
stupid idea, “hey why don’t we go to
Darwin to watch the supercars and
have a bit of a holiday while where
there?”. Then one of these pissed
blokes tells Peta (My wife) “hey Gaz
and I have a great idea; we’re going to
the super cars next year”.
With this Peta remarks “Oh are you
now, what to race or to watch??”
With this Knackers remarks “can you
race up there?” to which I reply ”well
maybe, but it’s not that easy” “Let’s
do it” says Knackers! A couple of days
go past I think it’s just a pipe dream
and it will go away, but Knackers is on
it, and gives a little more of a push,
and before you know it plans are
being put into place and the rest, as
they say, is history. To this day I still
shake my head and can’t believe it just
happened just like that.
The trip up was mainly faultless – we had a three-car convoy for the long drive spread over four and half days.
We had overnight stops at Port Augusta, Erldunda, Tenant Creek and Daly Waters, meeting the Braunes and
Moloney gang a couple of times along the way. It was great to at last arrive in Darwin, dump the car off at the
track and then meet up with the rest of the family and friends who took the easy

option and flew up. We spent a couple of days
doing touristy things around Darwin with a lot of
food and beverages of course and enjoyed the
sunshine and warmth.
On Thursday afternoon I was back to the track, a
little bit of paperwork, scrutineering, setting up and
then, of course, cleaning the car. Then to my
surprise, the organisers come around with a
$500.00 cheque as tow money. With an entry fee of
only $260.00 for three days of racing including your
marquee, I say to myself “how good is this?”.
Friday morning comes around, an early start being
on track by 8.45am and its already 30 odd degrees.
So off we go for free practice trying to learn the
track as I go, I would get one section right and then
stuff up the next. But we get though the session
without a hitch, make a couple of adjustments to
the car (and driver), fuel her up and we’re ready to
go again. Qualifying comes around and out we go
again, still trying to get the best out of the car and
track, but always have it in the back of my mind
“don’t break it and don’t bin it”, it’s a long way to
come to watch from the side lines. We qualify 18th
and I must be honest, I was a little disappointed
with this result, but anyway the Torana’s still going
and we have four races ahead of us. By lunchtime
Friday, we’re done, so we watch the Supercars for a
bit and then head back to Darwin for some food and
refreshments, lots of refreshments, you know you
got to keep hydrated up here!
Saturday morning comes around we had a little bit
of a sleep in as it was a 9.25am race start. The heat
is already on the rise. Again out there not only
learning the track, but also learning the other
drivers, who’s aggressive and willing to put it all on
the line, and who’s not. We come home 15th and still
going strong (well in my world strong) and still
looking for improvements to driver and car. Fill her
up with fuel and I’m ready to go again. Then
something strange happens, a lady from Foxtel by
the name of Kylie and cameraman come around
asking questions, and then ask if I would do an
interview. So I’m dripping with sweat and still high
on adrenalin, so I say “sure, when do you want to do
this?”. “Right now” she says and “I said, shit ok, let
me at least wipe the sweat off my face”. So the
interview is done and I ask her “why me, when there
are 37 odd cars here to choose from?” to which she
replies, “well, look around, your car’s the only one
here that seems to have people 2 rows deep taking
photos, I had to come and have a look at what all
the fuss is about”. The Torana did seem to draw a
lot of attention up there on and off the track, every
time we pulled into a servo or caravan park people
came out of the woodwork for a look. It was a little
bit embarrassing at times…my crew might have said
once or twice it was the mullet that was causing all
the commotion…there are a lot of mullets in NT!
So, we do the interview with Kylie who was really
good. She was intrigued about our history with the
car and the involvement of girls, Lauren & Tayla
being a part of the package. I think the interview will
never air, it doesn’t really seem that interesting
does it? But it did air, and my phone went off, with
many from home watching the Foxtel coverage who
had seen the interview and start giving me shit
(what would you expect, I would too). A great day
was had by all, watching the Supercars do their
thing, a few bevs in the trackside Coopers Bar and
then a Jimmy Barnes concert to finish off the
day…can all our state rounds be like this?
Anyway back to racing, Sunday morning is an early
start with an 8.25am 12 lap race. The race went
fantastic and had a great time except it went too
quick, 12 laps felt like 6 laps (how funny is it when
you are having a great race it goes so quick, but
when you’re having a bad race it takes forever for
the chequered flag to come out) . Anyway finished
that race in 11th and to be honest would have been
happy just to put it on the trailer and call it a day,
but in an hour’s time we are lining up again on the
dummy grid, so I was lucky that all I had to do was
fill it up with fuel and away we go. Again, another
great race coming home 8th with not a mark on the
car and running as sweet as it was on Friday
morning; I was one very happy boy. To be honest, I
could have started the weekend in tenth, and would
still have ended up in 8th position, I was never going
to trouble the cars ahead of me
Across the board, our category put on a good show
for the spectators. No surprises with Ray Hislop out
in front for the weekend but there was some great
Winter 2019 9
racing in the field between fellow IP Vic racers Rob
Braune and Keven Stoopman, Darwin local, Tim
Playford, and Zak Hudson from QLD and John
Callegari from WA.
In summary of the race meeting I have two words:
SHIT HOT! I found the track much more challenging
than I expected. There are some high-speed turns
that were pretty hard to convince yourself to go flat
on the gas thru and that front straight is soooooo
long. The people were friendly, the price was right,
and you even get your fuel delivered to your
marquee each day, bloody good stuff!
We spent a few more days in Darwin seeing the
sights, went swimming with a croc, a day trip to
Litchfield Park and plenty of food and bevs before
the long drive home. We timed the trip nicely
stopping at Tailem Bend on Sunday to cheer on Rick
Newman in his beast at the AMRS round, a great
end to the trip.
After clocking up almost 8000km on the Up the Guts
adventure, we’re glad to be home. I want to thank
my friends and family for their support and
encouragement on this trip, Shane (AKA Knackers)
and his trusty Harry Hilux as our tow car, Jodie,
Kayla, Luke, Darcy, Natalie and Ebony and of course
the most important people in my life, Peta, Lauren
and Tayla. Cheers Gary

Design evolution – Ford Mustang
Car designers are an interesting bunch. Heavily influenced by marketing and engineering, what comes out of factory’s at
times could insinuate they are just plain drug attics. There is no better example of this than the Ford Mustang. Extremely
popular now for its retro look, the 2019 version copies the fastback profile of the late 1960’s. But did they get it wrong in
between?
1965 Design brief: “Design a real muscle car”
1985 Design brief: “Mitsubishi
Scorpions are selling well, just
copy that”
2019 Design brief:
“Mmm… best just copy what we first
come up with”

Transporters
Supercar transporters are a
key part of the show and
teams marketing. The
mobile build boards are
now becoming a show
within themselves as they
convoy into towns.
According to Freightliner,
who supply prime movers
for Supercar trailers, the
entire combination of the
current spec transporter
weighs in at 57 tonnes
which is a lot of mass to
carry around the nation.
But if you compare it to NASCAR, it’s less than half the workload, with the average truck accumulating 40-
50,000km’s per annum. Many interstate freight trucks will accumulate this in a couple months.
The Freightliner Argosy is also fitted with a 15-litre Detroit six-cylinder diesel that pumps out 560hp. Other
models are now well over 600hp with 12 speed semi-automatic transmissions. A typically inventory onboard
includes:
• 2 to 6 Supercars
• 66 wheels
• 24 bumpers
• 12 complete doors
• 12 bonnets
• 30 front brake sets
• 18 rear brake sets
• 48 suspension dampers
• 15 door mirrors
• 10 sets of headlights
• 3 steering racks
• 4 gearboxes
• 4 spare engines
Most Supercar transporters split the operations between the A and B trailers. The A-trailer carries all the wheels
and tyres, body panels, spare engines and other bulky items, while the B trailer is allocated for the race cars,
plus other items that can be bundled into moveable storage containers and rolled out on race day. During the
event, the A trailer becomes an office for the technical team members.
Pricing exceeds $1M for an empty kit, but that value triples when you put all the goodies in them.

Bad cars – Trabant
Germany is known for real driver
cars like the BMW M3 and
Porsche 911. But back in the time
of the Cold War, over the wall in
communist East Germany, they
needed a people’s car like the VW
Beetle in the West.
Unlike the precision and intense
engineering Germany is known
for, the manufacturing and design
of the Trabant was really an
afterthought. At higher speeds,
body panels were prone to falling
off, but with 18hp, high speeds
were not common. Oil
consumption on the 2-stroke
motor was another issue, often
flooding the cabin with all sorts of
toxins.
Safety in design? Nope. There was nothing. Many we sold with no seat belts and even brake lights. Interestingly, people
often link the Trabant to Harry Potters car in the movies, which was in fact a Ford Anglia.
Technical
A57 Chrysler Engine
During the Second World War, the
government drew on industry to
assist in the production of military
assets, such as engines, machinery,
vehicles, etc. It was at times a weird
partnership, as you had an ordnance
specialising in blowing things up,
talking to some automotive engineer
who just designed the glove box
hinge of a Chrysler Imperial. No
better example is when Chrysler
were asked to supply an engine for
the M4 Sherman tank.
Above: Bolting five 6 cylinder engines together makes for a big unit
Winter 2019 15
In true American form, rather than engineer
something tailor made from the ground up,
you just grab the bits you’ve got and make
them bigger. In the case of the A57 engine,
it was a case of just bolting 5 250CU.in L-
head engines together.
The 30 cylinder, 20.5L engine incorporated
a sun gear drive arrangement to pool all the
drive to a common output. Total power was
370hp, but with a low compression of 6.2:1,
it proved quite reliable and very tolerant to
poor fuel, dust and abuse of the War.
Interestingly, Ford also built engines for the
Sherman, but had a very different
approach. Rather than achieving ‘big’ by
bolting engines together, they just scaled
up a V8. And I mean scaled up. 18 litres,
5.4in bore pumping out 500HP using 7.5:1
compression. Makes somewhat more
sense than Chrysler bolting engines
together. Of course, being a big V8 in the
USA meant it would be long before
someone had to fit one to a car….
Above: Each engine unit largely reflected what was being used in cars at the time.

Race Report
Round 1, Sandown
Round one of the Vic State Series for 2019 might have
fallen on the first weekend of Autumn but you could have
been mistaken for feeling like it was still the middle of
summer as the mercury scorched into the high 30s. A
solid field of 39 entries made up the grid. A diverse grid
of nine manufacturers were on show, including Nathan
Robinson’s freshly built E46 BMW, Mark Defanis with his
VF SS Commodore, Glenn Kenneday with his Gold E30,
along with the boss Gary Mckay in his LJ Torana. Dejavu
for Luke Grech-Cumbo in his VX Senator with his team
having to perform an overnight engine rebuild for the
second year running after breaking a valve and damaging
a piston during Friday practice. Fortunately this year the
damage was easier to fix as the team managed to get a
solid 5 hours sleep unlike 2018.
Qualifying was a tricky session with many drivers
scrambling to find space on the busy track after a red flag
was brought out to recover Bruce Hendersons Renault
after a wheel nut failure.
A restart to the session with 10 minutes remaining saw
Luke Grech-Cumbo and Tony Maloney climb to the top
with the all BMW second row of the grid with Glenn
Kenneday and Nathan Robinson ahead of Rob Braune.
Stephen Zourkas was the first of the under 2lt cars with
an impressive time of a 1:23.9.
Matt Logan, Ian McLennan, Mark Defanis and John
Dawson rounding out the top 10.
A second red flag unfortunately would end qualifying
early when James West, Wayne Dekker and Andrew
Morris had a coming together at Turn 1 leaving West’s
car sitting in the infield and debris over the track.
Race one saw an even start off the line from the front
group of cars with Tony Maloney having his nose ahead
into turn 1 with Luke Grech-Cumbo having a deep run
into turn one to retake the lead.
With the top four finishing how they started, some great
battles took place on the greasy hot track with relative IP
newcomer Ian McLennan dropping to 11th on the first lap
however having a nice comeback to finish 5th.
Mark Defanis and his newly built VF Commodore had a
solid first race maintaining his qualifying position to finish
6th.
Matt Logan had an unfortunate retirement with a tail
shaft failure on lap 7, along with Brad Wyatt who’s
overheating issues continued. Rob Braune also had a rare
failure with an oil issue putting his E30 out for the
weekend.
Andrew Morris after having to start from pit lane half a
lap down after an issue drove from last place to finish in
29th.
Paul Grziwotz led Stephen Zourkas home in 12th and 13th
ahead of Velibor Tomic in 17th in the U2L class.
Race 2 was an even jump from the front row with Luke
Just taking the advantage into turn 1 and running away
with an 11 second gap to Tony at the chequered flag.
Glenn Kenneday was an unfortunate retirement from
race 2, which elevated The Victorian IP President to P3
Nathan Robinson had a solid run home in 4th leading the
VF SS of Mark Defanis home in P5.
Persistant gearbox issues didn’t stop Stephen Zourkas
from leaving home Paul Grziwotz by 1 second in the U2L
field with Vel Tomic behind them.
Race 3 was another even start from the front group of
cars with Luke and Tony heading into turn 1 side by side.
Tony Maloney unfortunately had a tyre failure on lap 6
ending his race early.
This left Andrey Morris and Nathan Robinson to have a
solid battle with the pair crossing the line in 2nd and 3rd
separated by only 2 tenths.
Gray Mckay limped home to a lucky 4th after unfortunate
contact with Craig Caspersz who spun into T9 leaving the
red torana with nowhere to go but into the side of him.
Mark Defanis and Ian Mclennan coming home in 5th and
6th after both put in solid drives in their both relatively
new cars.
The U2L order remained unchanged in race 3 with
Zourkas leading home Grziwotz and Tomic in a Honda 1-
2-3.

Round 2 at Phillip Island brought an early start for
the 36 Improved Production competitors, with the
category first on the track for Qualifying just five
minutes after engines could be started.
By the end of Qualifying, former State champion
Nathan Robinson’s E46 M3 took pole position
ahead of current champ Luke Grech-Cumbo in the
HSV Senator. A last lap burst by Andrew Butcher in
his E36 M3 pipped perennial frontrunner Rob
Braune for 3rd, while the big VE of Matt Logan
qualified 5th ahead of Michael Hart’s VS
Commodore. In 6th, Stephen Zourkas’ screaming
Civic was the first Under 2 Litre car, more than three
seconds ahead of Kevin Coulson’s Civic in 17th and
Mark Baldwin’s Civic in 19th.
Fresh from some quick paddock exhaust repairs,
Grech-Cumbo got the jump on Robinson off the line
in Race 1, while Braune had passed Butcher by Turn
1. Craig Caspersz spun in Turn 2 on the first lap,
causing some excitement to the mid-field pack that
successfully avoided him. He battled back to finish
16th. From Lap 1, the first five cars maintained their
positions for the rest of the race: Grech-Cumbo,
Robinson, Braune, Butcher and Logan. Slotting into
6th after qualifying 15th was Andrew Rhodes-
Anderson, whose 6 litre VN Commodore finally
found reliability. Zourkas was 7th in the Civic, ahead
of the big V8s of Mark Defanis’ VF SS and Tony
Moloney’s HQ, with Brad Blunt’s E36 M3 rounding
out the top 10. Among the other 2 litre cars, Bryson
Lloyd finished next in 17th place and Callum Jensen
was 19th in the Peugeot 306.
Race 2 on Sunday morning was a six-lap sprint, with
the first three positions again going to Grech-
Cumbo, Robinson and Braune. As in Race 1,
Robinson recorded the quickest lap of the race but
was unable to complete a pass on Grech-Cumbo.
Robinson’s M3 could catch and challenge the far
more powerful HSV as far as turn 12, but Grech-
Cumbo could shake him loose down the long
straight. Behind them, a spin by Butcher exiting
Honda in Lap 1 shook things up. Rhodes-Anderson
held on to finish 4th ahead of Logan and Zourkas,
with Butcher 7th. In his first weekend in Improved
Production racing, Andrew Tickner’s 5 litre VH
Commodore jumped to 8th, with Blunt finishing 9th
and Hart 10th. Second to Zourkas in the Under 2 litre
was Baldwin in 15th followed by Lloyd in 19th. Adrian
Taranto’s Audi S3 blew a damaged tyre on the
straight and the AWD came in handy as he brought
the car to a stop in the grass comfortably clear of
the wall.
Sunday afternoon’s 10 lap race brought the same
result at the top of the table: Grech-Cumbo a
winner by just over a second from Robinson, with
Braune a second further back. It was 17 second gap
from Braune to Butcher in 4th. Rhodes-Anderson
and Logan held off Zourkas, again 7th in the tiny
Civic. Taranto stormed through the field to take 8th
and mix up the top 10, while Casperz found form
and finished 9th ahead of Blunt. Andrew Morris
finally got fuel problems in his VH Commodore
sorted out and ended the race 11th, while Ian
McLennan crossed in 14th in his VZ Monaro after
overnight engine repairs. After reliability problems
all weekend, Moloney finished 16th, a long way from
the two podium finishes he enjoyed at Sandown in
Round 1. In the 2 litre class, the variety continued
with Baldwin 2nd and Lloyd 3rd, followed by Paul
Grziwotz in his Civic finally getting an untroubled
run with his third engine of the weekend.
The win in Race 3 gave Grech-Cumbo a clean sweep
and left him unbeaten after two rounds of the 2019
season. In the Under 2 litre, Zourkas showed that
the Honda Civic was going to be very difficult to beat
on any track this year.
