AUGUST 2017 — Av & Elul 5777 Dear Friends, The month of Av is the saddest one of the Jewish calendar, culminang on Tisha b'Av (the 9th of Av). Jews all over the world will gather to chant the sorrowful words of the book of Eicha (Lamentaons), in its haunng melody, as they mourn the destrucon of the First and Second Temples. These ancient Temples were once the very fulcrum on which Jewish life turned. On Tisha bAv, we tap into the grief our ancestors felt as their system of community, governance, security, religious pracce and connecon to the Divine collapsed before their eyes. By making space for the grief of what has been lost, Tisha bAv also provides a powerful opportunity for us to reimagine what might be. When the ancient Temple fell apart, new raw materials became available for rebuilding and reconfiguring Jewish life and religious pracce - eventually leading to the formalizaon of rabbinic Judaism, a different iteraon of religious life what had been before. Animal sacrifice was no longer possible, so the locaon for sacred eang became the individual tables of every Jewish household. Naonal gatherings were no longer feasible, so more localized gatherings would now take place at the synagogue, marketplace, and the yeshiva. Similarly, if systems we have come to rely upon fail us today, we have the opportunity to let go of the structures that no longer serve us, so that we might begin to create the world we imagine. Mourning what has been lost is an essenal stop on our way to the place of all possibilies. The creave process is an ideal vehicle for this journey, providing us a way to approach our sadness, to know our grief, and then to be big and bold as we venture forth. I encourage folks to take some me during the 24-hour period of the day to think individually about their connecon to the destrucon of Jewish life 2000 years ago, as well as the parts of their own relaonship to Judaism that are in a state of destrucon”, and in need of being rebuilt and rethought. This Tisha bAv may we emerge connected, empathic and awake. May we hold the loss we feel tenderly in our hands as we begin to reconfigure our broken fragments into their next vibrant iteraon. In so doing, may we expand the boundaries of what is possible as we work to build the world of our dreams. AUGUST 2017 — Av & Elul 5777

Dear Friends,

The month of Av is the saddest one of the Jewish calendar, culminating on Tisha b'Av (the 9th of Av). Jews all over the world will gather to chant the sorrowful words of the book of Eicha (Lamentations), in its haunting melody, as they mourn the destruction of the First and Second Temples. These ancient Temples were once the very fulcrum on which Jewish life turned. On Tisha b’Av, we tap into the grief our ancestors felt as their system of community, governance, security, religious practice and connection to the Divine collapsed before their eyes.

By making space for the grief of what has been lost, Tisha b’Av also provides a powerful opportunity for us to reimagine what might be. When the ancient Temple fell apart, new raw materials became available for rebuilding and reconfiguring Jewish life and religious practice - eventually leading to the formalization of rabbinic Judaism, a different iteration of religious life what had been before. Animal sacrifice was no longer possible, so the location for sacred eating became the individual tables of every Jewish household. National gatherings were no longer feasible, so more localized gatherings would now take place at the synagogue, marketplace, and the yeshiva. Similarly, if systems we have come to rely upon fail us today, we have the opportunity to let go of the structures that no longer serve us, so that we might begin to create the world we imagine.

Mourning what has been lost is an essential stop on our way to the place of all possibilities. The creative process is an ideal vehicle for this journey, providing us a way to approach our sadness, to know our grief, and then to be big and bold as we venture forth. I encourage folks to take some time during the 24-hour period of the day to think individually about their connection to the destruction of Jewish life 2000 years ago, as well as the parts of their own relationship to Judaism that are in a state of “destruction”, and in need of being rebuilt and rethought. This Tisha b’Av may we emerge connected, empathic and awake. May we hold the loss we feel tenderly in our hands as we begin to reconfigure our broken fragments into their next vibrant iteration. In so doing, may we expand the boundaries of what is possible as we work to build the world of our dreams.

With blessings,

R Gabe
