Resurrection Parish Mission Statement
We, the Body of Christ of
Resurrection Parish in Gerritsen Beach, Brooklyn,
proclaim our service to God, our Church, and our Community.
We celebrate the sacramental life of the Church to serve the needs of our parishioners and neighbors always with faith,
hope and charity to grow in love and service to God and one another.
As a community of believers we will build up our parish as
Jesus proclaimed that He is “The Resurrection
and the Life.”
I am the Resurrection and the Life
Fill us at daybreak with your kindness, that we may shout for joy and gladness all our days.
Psalm 90:14
TODAY’S READINGS First Reading — Do not spend your life toiling for material gain (Ecclesiastes 1:2; 2:21-23). Psalm — If today you hear his voice, harden not your hearts (Psalm 90). Second Reading — Christ has raised you to new life, so seek now what is above (Colossians 3:1-5, 9-11). Gospel — Be on guard against all greed, for your life does not consist of earthly possessions, but of the riches of the reign of God (Luke 12:13-21). Eighteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Robbing a Bank
The second reading from the Letter to the Colossians goes well with the first reading and the Gospel. Those passages warn how useless material wealth will be when we die. St. Paul continues this warning by reminding us that we have already died with Christ in baptism and risen to new life. To live this new life we must put to death whatever tendencies keep us from Christ. Wealth can be a gift from God. The abuse is not necessarily in the possession of wealth. More likely, we abuse wealth in the way we attain it. How does that happen? I can give an obvious answer such as robbing a bank. Instead, do I work a full day for my pay, or do I spend a lot of time visiting with other employees or texting my friends? Am I honest with my customers, charging only for work I have done? As for using our wealth, we usually think of family first. Do we spoil our kids, so they can “have the things I couldn’t afford when I was young”? Or do we teach them to work for what they get? Do we teach our children to be generous to others? Notice that Paul goes deeper, pointing out the thoughts and desires that lead to a life centered in wealth. In baptism we put to death passion and greed, tendencies that push us to own more or to control another person. Paul uses the image of taking off these vices as if they were clothing and putting on a new self that shows Christ in us. We begin to see Christ in others, for as Paul says, “Christ is all and in all” (Colossians 3:11).

DeSales Media launches prayer site for the Diocese of Brooklyn
“Inspired in Pope Francis’ prayer request refrain ‘Please, pray for me’, the Diocese wanted to provide a place where people can request prayers as well as pray for each other’s intentions. The Sisters Servants of the Lord and the Virgin of Matará, a contemplative order of nuns cloistered in Borough Park, Brooklyn, will be praying for all submitted intentions from 5:45 a.m. until 10:00 p.m. DeSales Media submits intentions on a daily basis to the nuns, who spend their lives in silence, adoration, and prayer. The site features two options: “Request a Prayer” and “Pray for Someone”. Users select a prayer topic, type in their personal message, and select whether they would like their prayer posted on the page so community members can pray for them. There is also an option to email the intention to the person that one is praying for. In addition, users can choose to pray for another person by reading the intentions listed and click “I prayed for you”. To submit a prayer and/or pray for someone’s intentions, visit
