Dear Friends, “Blessed are the Clean of Heart, for they shall see God.” (Mt 5:8) A lover of the world is essentially a lover of self. As St. Augustine’s often cited passage from The City of God puts it: “Accordingly, two cities have been formed by two loves: the earthly by the love of self, even to the contempt of God; the heavenly by the love of God, even to the contempt of self. The former, in a word, glories in itself, the latter in the Lord.” (St. Augustine, The City of God, Book XIV Chap. 28) Blessed are the pure of heart is not the maxim of the world. This is pretty safe to say. Impurity seems to be an intoxicating siren’s song that reaches all sectors of society. There is no denying it. In the mid 1900’s Fulton Sheen aptly describes the situation then, which is perhaps even more ripe now, “The world is living today in what might be described as an era of carnality, which glorifies sex; hates restraint; identifies purity with coldness, innocence with ignorance; and turns men and women into Buddhas with their eyes closed, hands folded across their chests, intently looking inward, thinking only of self.” (Fulton Sheen, Cries from the Cross) And more recently, in 2019, in his letter speaking about the abuse crisis, Benedict XVI puts it this way, “A society without God — a society that does not know Him and treats Him as non-existent — is a society that loses its measure, . . . its orientation. And because the compass disappears that points us in the right direction by teaching us to distinguish good from evil.” The Greek word that is used in the Gospel is καθαρός (katharos), which means properly “without admixture” or something that is clean, pure, unstained, either literally or ceremonially or spiritually; guiltless, innocent, upright. There is a certain sense of clarity or brilliance that is identified in the pure. When the faculties of the soul are pure, that is, when they are able to perceive their proper object, chances are they will see God. For example, in order to see truth objectively there needs to be a certain clarity of mind and purity of the intellect to allow creation to speak to us; we are capable of seeing its beauty and mystery. St. Thomas Aquinas rightly describes this clarity of mind when speaking about contemplation. He says, “Beauty, consists in a certain clarity and due proportion. Now each of these is found radically in the reason; because both the light that makes beauty seen, and the establishing of due proportion among things belong to reason. Hence since the contemplative life consists in an act of the reason, there is beauty in it by its very nature and essence; wherefore it is written (Wisdom 8:2) of the contemplation of wisdom: “I became a lover of her beauty.” “On the other hand,” St. Thomas continues, “beauty is in the moral virtues by participation, in so far as they participate in the order of reason; and especially is it in temperance, which restrains the concupiscence which especially darken the light of reason. Hence it is that the virtue of chastity most of all makes man apt for contemplation, since bodily pleasures most of all weigh the mind down to sensible objects, as Augustine says. (Summa Theol. II-II, q. 180, a. 2) Another example may be a purity of the will, which would mean that there is a singularity in our desires. It is a heart that is not divided amongst many things but directed firmly, simply, purely towards One. There are not many loves or goods attracting it, only one. Many saints thrive upon the simplest of maxims in this regard, for example, St. Louis Marie de Montfort’s “God Alone,” or St. Teresa of Avila’s “Solo Dios Basta” (God alone suffices). When these two faculties or powers of the spiritual soul, namely, the intellect and the will enjoy such a purity or clarity, the other (lower) faculties of man are able to follow, such as our passions or emotions. For, the passions in and of themselves are on the blind side of the vision spectrum – they need a higher principle to make sure that they help, rather then hinder, the individual to conduct itself properly, i.e., towards its proper end. Ever heard of the saying, “He or she was blinded by their passions”? I think we have all been there. Perhaps this time of Shelter-in-place will help us to recalibrate and purify our hearts, minds, and sensibilities to begin to regain our sight. Let’s face it, before the shut-down began perhaps we were distracted by many things, so that it was hard to see the Divine Hand in the world, much less appreciate it or love it well. Mary, Our Lady of Peace, pray for us, Fr. Brian

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. Amen. What is a Spiritual Communion? St. Thomas Aquinas once defined Spiritual Communion as “an ardent desire to receive Jesus in the Most Holy Sacrament and in lovingly embracing Him as if we had actually received Him.” You just need to approach Him with sincerity, humility and a desire to follow in His footsteps in acts of faith and charity. St. Jean-Marie Vianney, a French priest famous for converting countless souls to Christ in his parish of Ars in the 19th century, once said “when we feel the love of God growing cold, let us instantly make a Spiritual Communion. When we cannot go to the church, let us turn towards the tabernacle; no wall can shut us out from the good God.”

PARISH REGISTRATION Are You a Registered Parishioner? If you attend Mass here regularly, we encourage you to register as a parishioner of Our Lady of Peace parish. Why registering is important: 1. If we as a parish do not know who is out there, how can we serve the needs of all? This includes single people or young families who may not see the need to register. 2. Make Sacrament prep easier when the time comes. If you’re not a registered parishioner, this may greatly delay the process for Sacrament prep. 3. Letters of Recommendation There are occasions where letters of recommendations

are needed from your parish pastor (ie Catholic school enrollment, scholarships, godparent eligibility, etc.). If you’re not registered, we cannot provide this letter. Anyone, regardless of where they live is welcome to register at OLOP. Please note: there is a three (3) month waiting period from the date of registration before being considered a full-fledged registered parishioner. Any requests for pastor signatures on any forms, letters, or wedding preparation paperwork cannot not be processed within the 3 months. To register, call 408-988-4585, or email us at [email protected] for a registration form.
