Amarkantak is a pilgrimage town in districtof Anuppur, Madhya Pradesh, India. It is aunique natural heritage area- the meeting pointof the Vindhyan and the Satpuras mountainranges, with the Maikal Hills being the fulcrum.More importantly, it is a birth place ofriver Narmada, Son and Johila.

The nearest railway station is Pendra Road(CG), nearly equidistance (28 km) from theAmarkantak and the university. The nearestairport are Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh)approximately (240 km), and Raipur Airport(220 km) receiving daily flights from Delhi andMumbai .

The weather of Amarkantak in Novemberremains pleasant. A perfect time to visit nearbyplaces of tourist interest. Day time temperatureis around 20-28 0C, while nights get little bit cold(15-20 0C). It will be better to bring couple ofwarm cloths.

Chemical sciences hold a unique position among the different disciplines in science.

Frequently it merges with other disciplines such as biology, pharmacy, physics and

engineering. As a resul, the overlapping region productively gives huge impact on

human mankind. Chemical science embodies many branches of research pursuit such as

organic, inorganic and physical chemistry as major one. In addition, the progress of

research in chemical sciences has been phenomenal leading to emergence of many sub-

disciplines such as natural product chemistry (discovery of lead molecules), material

chemistry (hybrid materials), nanomedicines and drug delivery, alternative energy

source (renewable energy), green chemistry (improved security in chemical industries).

The pioneering work by Acharya Prafulla Chandra Roy in the early 20th century in

Kolkata made U-turn in chemistry in the Indian subcontinent. At early stage, generally,

the Indian chemists were involved in doing research in the chemistry of alkaloids,

terpenes, flavones and steroids (Natural product chemistry). Research in natural

product chemistry plays a significant role as it immensely help to discover a lead

compound or new efficient drug molecules for human health. Noteworthy work was

carried in the country on terpenes (Shuk Dev and his co-workers for Longifolene

chemistry which enriches the perfume industry in India), synthetic dyes (K.

Venkataraman) in textile industry, isolation and detailed structural characterization of

azadirachtin, obtained from the seeds of neem plant (T. R. Govindachari). A remarkable

research output on natural product chemistry division has already been made and still

there is a chance for great opening and learning in the field of new drug molecules. The

Indira Gandhi National Tribal University is situated in the field of millions medicinal

plants near the Amarkantak, MP. The time has come now for doing research with

medicinal plants in scientific manner and how to translate to the recent era (Traditional

to translational) for the betterment of human health. A full session will be discussed the

research output on recent trends in natural product chemistry in Indian subcontinent.

Definitely, by gathering the intellectuals and chemists and also other researchers from

Concept Note & Thrust Areas

different sub-disciplines in chemical sciences greatly emphasizes to make a blue print

for further art of research on Natural Product Chemistry.

Furthermore, research in solid state chemistry, surface science, material chemistry are

being actively pursued in Indian subcontinent, a considerable appreciation note to the

international community has been received for the pioneering work of C.N.R. Rao and

his co-workers. The proposed three day National Symposium also discuss the current

effort on hybrid materials and it’s application, particularly, better materials for energy

storage and alternative energy sources.

The year 2017, the chemical community is celebrating the century of highest

recognition, Nobel award by Haber for the discovery of Haber process to manufacture

ammonia in pilot scale which unambiguously brings a revolutionary arena in agriculture.

The catalysis field, organometallic reagents and it’s application in organic molecules,

synthesis of several important synthons for pharma industries has driven an significant

position at international level by Indian chemists. As a result, the fine chemicals and

pharmaceutical industries have registered an export market of US $3.5 billion

accounting for 11% of the total export from India. The community deals with great

challenges to design a practical and cost effective catalytic system

(heterogeneous/homogeneous or racemic/asymmetric version) for the synthesis of

bioactive molecules and other fine chemicals. Development of detectors/sensors to

sense emerging pollutants, biological or radiological materials is also a great interest to

chemical community. The overall fruitful discussion and knowledge sharing with young

generations on the topic asymmetric synthesis and catalysis along with applications in

diverse fields in one umbrella would be great advantages for the future aspect.

Last few decades, Green chemistry embodies a major area of research in chemical

sciences which helps to improving security in chemical industries by using alternate

environmentally friendly technology, non-toxic chemicals, use of green solvents and

renewable or alternate energy sources. Discussion on green chemistry between expert

scholars in Indian subcontinent and newcomer students helps enormously to outline for

the sustainable development.

We, the organizing committee believe that the proposed three days National

Symposium on “Recent Trends in Chemical Sciences” organized by Department of

Chemistry, Indira Gandhi national tribal university , Amarkantak, MP, bring a healthy

and competitive research environment among young chemists on the selected emerging

topics for the development of society.
