“Naught’s had, all spent,Where our desire is got without
content,‘Tis safer to be that which we destroyThan by destruction dwell in doubtful
joy.” (III.ii,4-7)
- Lady MacbethShe is talking to herself. She is wondering where Macbeth
has gone and realizing that killing the king only made things worse. This quote means that Lady Macbeth is not happy with the results after killing King Duncan and isn’t
sure why.
“Better be with the dead, Whom we, to gain our peace, have
sent to the peace,Than on the torture of the mind to
lie,In restless ecstasy.” (III.ii,19-22)
- MacbethHe is talking to his wife, Lady Macbeth. She asks him why he’s still sad after killing King Duncan. He wishes that he
would die instead of being mentally tortured and deprived of sleep.
“Things bad begun make string themselves by ill.” (III.ii,55)
- Macbeth
He is still talking to his wife, Lady Macbeth. She asks him what he’s going to do about Banquo and his son but he won’t tell her what until he’s is done doing it. This quote means that doing a bad thing will make you do more bad
things.
“Double, double toil and trouble,Fire burn and caldron bubble.” (IV.i,10-11)
- The Witches
They are talking to each other. They are talking while boiling a cauldron. This quote is just one of their spells
to stir up trouble.
“ Angels are bright still, though the brightest fell,Though all thing foul would wear the brows
of grace,Yet grace must still look so.” (IV.iii,22-24)
- Malcolm
He says this to Macduff. They are talking about Macbeth. This quote means even though angels can be evil, good
still shines through.
“Such welcome and unwelcome things at once.‘Tis hard to reconcile.” (IV.iii,138-139)
- Macduff
He is talking to Malcolm. Malcolm talks to him about fighting Macbeth together but then asks him why he is
silent. This quote means that thinking about odd or unique stories is very challenging.
