There will be three Themes to this Semester A project;

IMAGINARY MUSEUMS

RICH MIX / MULTI-CULTURAL

ENVIRONMENTAL GRAPHICS

This is NOT about a fine art practice show, it will be an informative exhibition such as those you find in venues such as V&A, Science Museum, Expo’s and Museums such as the Mu-seum of Childhood in Bethnal Green.

At the same time you will be split into groups and asked to work on one of the themes. Start looking for venues to place your exhibition, funding, budgeting, technology required and working visuals that show clearly your developing ideas. In the beginning of January you will be reviewed in the AVA Gallery where you will set up working models and the visualisa-tions of your ideas. This project may cover many possibilities of design from Architecture, Motion Graphics, Fashion Design, Packaging, Typography, Signage and Publication

As a project our group had to decide what theme we would work on for the exhibition, after a length of research and group discussions we decided to work on a environmental graphics we each looked into different ideas and concepts and in the end we all agreed to work on quotes exhibition, we all looked into different ways of exhibiting our quotes and ways of producing them such as light projection, posters, graffiti ect. As the final idea we came together and decided to produce our quotes as stencils which than included looking into ways of making these such as laser cutting, spray painting. In the end we decided to save on cost by making the quotes ourselves by designing them and getting them printed and cut by us, its a lengthy process however we had to keep the costs in mind. Than when it came to putting the quotes up we couldn’t use spray paints due to the health and safety regula-tions so we opted for marker pens, a much lengthier process but with a good outcome.

Environmental graphics

What Is Environmental Graphic Design?

Environmental design is a field without borders, and is therefore com-

monly misunderstood. As a multidisciplinary profession merging so many

different fields, it’s easy to understand how anyone not directly involved

would get confused. That lack of clear definition, however, is arguably one

of the profession’s strengths. As we go through its history and spectrum of

design disciplines, we’ll try to plainly answer the question on most peo-

ple’s minds: “What is it?”

Along with the lack of clear definition and boundaries, part of the confu-

sion stems from the many different terms used to describe what we do.

Environmental graphics, architectural graphics, wayfinding, signage, and

supergraphics are just a few of the terms that have been used the history

of our profession. Anymore the term “environmental graphic design” is

the most widely used by industry professionals.

Facebook Group

Whenever there is the element of group work there will always be disagreements

and problems occurring due to people having to work together, whether it is

from group members not being able to communicate or meet at a certain time.

To help us communicate and to keep track of what’s going on withing the group

I created a facebook group which allows all the group members to post mes-

sages, pictures or links to their work from other sties such as dropbox, or video

links from youtube. This allowed us as a group to come together in a sense and

comment on peoples work. The great thing is unlike sending an email once its

posted on a facebook group all the group members can see and add comments.

This way you can see that all the group members are doing work and participat-

ing with the project and exhibition. The only drawback is when a group member

decided to leave the whole project he than left the facebook group and deleted

his posts as well as other peoples ones than again the project was near the end

so loosing old posts wasn’t that big a problem. Overall with the rise of social

networking sites a Facebook group allows for a free and easy way for a group

to communicate.

Quotes and Stencils

After agreeing to have the exhibition about quotes and creating them with stencils we each had to design 5 each, with 5 group memebers that will give us 25 stencils around the AVA building. After designing mine the group found out that we were not permited to use spray paints inside the builiding which meant a change in my stencil design, originally they were designed one big peice which will be printed and cut than spray painted over.

Quotes and Stencils

Since we couldn’t use spray paint we had to use marker pens to make our stencils, so save time on doing so I re thinked my stencil design and decided to cut out each letter as a stencil and than put the quotes togheter that way. This method was much quicker to put up on the wall, also it was much quicker to get printed and cut as unlike with a one piece stencil you print and cut one letter individu-ally and reuse it in every word required.

Exhibition

For the final exhibition all the groups from the module had to agree how to

present their work in the exhibition space available in the AVA. The final agree-

ment was for each group to have produced four A2 sized posters, one A0 and

a one minute long video about the views and opinions of the project. My part in

this was the one minute long video (stills). After gathering each group members

opinions I than put it together into a minute long video sharing their view and

opinions. Software used “Corel Video Studio ProX3”
