to submission to this journal, because as em-ployees of the federal government their work isin the public domain and may not be copy-righted. However, if portions of a paper havealready been reproduced elsewhere, the HomeEconomics Research Journal may decide not toaccept the paper.
In special cases exceptions may be made tothe stated policy on prior publication. TheHomeEconomics Research Journal published a paperthat had been mailed to persons attending ameeting of an AHEA-affiliated organization(Krasny, 1974) and one that had been repro-duced and circulated among individuals (Mon-roe, 1974) because these papers were judged tobe of special interest or merit and had not beenprinted in copyrighted publications. Also, per-
mission to publish the papers was obtainedfrom the persons or organizations involved.Authors submitting papers should give com-plete information on the title page of the paper, listing oral presentations, places where abstractsof the paper have been published, and so forth. In such cases, the more explanation providedwhen the paper is submitted, the more favora-ble may be the chances for acceptance of the
paper.

Quotation from Copyrighted SourcesMaterial submitted to the Home Economics
Research Journal is assumed to be the author’soriginal work. This journal will not publishquotations of 50 words or more from otherworks unless the author submitting the paperhas received permission to reprint the passagefrom the holder of the copyright. ResearchJournal authors must also obtain permission toreproduce all charts, tables, or figures that havepreviously been copyrighted. The author should write to the holder of the
copyright (usually the publisher or author) forpermission to reprint an excerpt from the text, graphic or tabular material, or photographs, diagrams, or similar material. The followinginformation should be stated in the letter:
1. Title and author(s) of the book, periodical,or article in which the specific material ap-
peared, with all bibliographic information (dateof publication, edition, page number, and soforth)
2. Name of the author(s) of the forthcomingpaper and tentative title of the paper
3. Name of the journal to which the paper isto be submitted (Home Economics Research
Journal) and publisher (American HomeEconomics Association)
4. Nature of the work in which the quotedmaterial will be reproduced, including the ap-proximate expected circulation or number ofcopies to be printed’ 1

6. An exact description, summary, or repro-duction of the material to be quoted or repro-duced.A photocopy of the author’s letter requesting
permission to reproduce the material and acopy of the letter from the holder of the
copyright granting permission must accompanythe final revised manuscript submitted to theeditor of the Home Economics Research Journal. The paper cannot be accepted without theseletters. The actual passage quoted, figure, ortable reproduced must be followed by a foot-note or credit line. Often the copyright holderwill stipulate that the footnote or credit line bephrased according to his or her instructions;otherwise the footnote or credit line should citethe author, year, and page on which the originalmaterial appeared, followed by the statement,
&dquo;Copyright 19- by ; reprinted bypermission.&dquo; The safest procedure for an author submit-
ting a manuscript to the Home Economics Re-search Journal is to secure permission to reprintany material that is not entirely his or her
original work; infringement of copyright can beclaimed even when the passages selected are not
reprinted verbatim, but show only a substantialsimilarity to the copyrighted work.
In submitting quoted or reproduced materialto the Research journal, it is of critical impor-tance for the author to make sure that the
quotation is exact in wording, punctuation, spelling, and all other respects. On the whole, itis best to avoid long quotations; these should beused only when absolutely essential to the worksubmitted.
