Housing Statement

The University offers a four year housing guarantee to all of its undergraduate students. It re-introduced thispledge to its admitted students in 2008, almost ten years since its graduating seniors were unable to live oncampus. The guarantee was made possible with the opening of the housing units on the York Hill Campus, whichproject was a $350 million dollar investment on behalf of the University. The nearly 1,500 beds introduced sincethat campus opened has increased the number of University owned beds by one-third. Unfortunately, while thisyear nearly one third of the senior class will live in University owned housing and the newly constructed beds atYork Hill are mostly occupied, the demand for University owned housing has lagged behind the available supply. Asthe chart on the next page shows there are over 260 available beds on the campus next year. It is in theUniversity's intent to fill those available beds and, in the long term, to have as many students in University ownedhousin~l as possible. It also recognizes that it shares this common goal with the Town of Hamden. It has madeefforts to increase senior class demand for this housing with the creation of the "Senior Experience" which offershousin~l discounts and other favorable living arrangements for members of the class. This marketing effort hasresulted in greater number of seniors moving back on campus each year since it was initiated. However, after overten years off campus, it has taken longer than anticipated to eliminate the culture of seniors living off campus.

The University continues to accommodate all of its undergraduates who desire University owned housing. It iscommitted to examine ways to fill the underutilized supply of University owned housing in the future. It looksforward to eliminating that differential and providing beds for additional students as the demand for housing rises.Presently, apprQximately 80% of its undergraduates live in University owned housing. That statistic is equal to orbetter than most Colleges and Universities. Given the fact that many students, especially with present economicrealities, live at home with their parents, other students are living abroad, and clinical offerings require students tolive away from campus, a 100% ratio is unrealistic. Nonetheless, the University stands by the commitment it hasmade to the Town and to its student body to accommodate each and every Quinnipiac student who applies forUniversity owned housing. It is doing so today and will continue to do so tomorrow.

1. Available Beds can be increased by as much as 372 beds in any given year by tripling students inrooms historically used as triples, but currently programmed as doubles to provide increased studentsatisfaction.

2. Available Beds can be increased by the acquisition of new houses or the construction of previously\ .

approved beds on York HilI.

3. Bed requirement is estimated based on historical three year averages of student retention rates.
