Program and Education Items

Program

June 4, 2012. Hallye Bone, from St. Louis, MO, will share a presentation entitled “Quilting Through Hard Times,”

as well as talk about techniques used in her newest book, “Flower Dance.” Hallye is not only a popular lecturer, but

also a national quilt appraiser. She’ll be working with the Quilting Cupboard in Rochester to be available for quilt

appraisals on Tues, June 5, 9-4 p. m. The private sessions last 30 minutes per quilt and have been reported to

provide pleasant surprises.

Other Volunteers are still needed for assisting with the play, "Quilters" being produced in conjunction with the State

quilt show, June 13, 14, 15, and 16th. Contact Sue Zahasky for specifics.

Tip from the President-Elect

Hi quilters,

If any of you have busy days like I do, I think you'll like this tip:

Break up your big project into little mini-projects that you can tackle in a 15-20 minute "me-time" during your day.

I used this method to make 1 or 2 blocks a few days a week and was surprised how quickly I was done with all the

blocks I needed for my quilt top. The borders became the last mini-project. It was a lot less intimidating than

looking at the entire stack of fabric pieces or strips!

I hope you've all had some time to enjoy our beautiful weather. We've had a few of those "I wish I could bottle

this for next January" days...just delightful! And here's a gentle reminder to take time to stop and smell the

roses and tell those you care about that they are special to you. :o)

Happy quilting!

Linda Edd, President-Elect

May 7, 2012 Meeting Minutes

Rochester Quilt Sew-Ciety Day Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 1:00pm by Lucy Horn, Day Facilitator, at Calvary Evangelical Free Church.

Lucy reviewed the benefits of membership. A motion was made by Darlene Kelley and seconded by Sharon

Dunford to accept the April minutes as published in the May newsletter. Lucy gave a brief account of the origin of

the Log Cabin quilt block design.

Show and Tell: Members shared 3 wall hangings, 6 bed , 1 baby, 6 charity, 2 lap, 2 T-shirt quilts and 1

pastoral stole.

New members and guests: 2 new members joined QS and 7 guests were welcomed.

Lotto Block: The lotto block did not make it into the May Newsletter, paper copies were available during

the meeting. The June block was presented.

Program: Doug Leko, of Antler Quilt Designs, has been quilting since the age of 5 and took his first class at 8.

Doug showed many of his original design quilts and patterns were available for purchase. He used EQ7 for his

design work and Presencia thread, which is a long staple, 3ply and 100% cotton, is his favorite to piece with. Doug

was an entertaining, enthusiastic and educational speaker.

Door prizes: 2 tickets for the play The Quilters.

Motion to adjourn: At 2:45pm the motion was made by Randa VanKirk and seconded by Sandy Stiles.

Respectfully submitted by,

Julie Tebay, Day Secretary

Quilters Sew-ciety Evening Meeting Minutes

The meeting was called to order at 7:00 pm by Janet Bruce, Evening Facilitator, at Calvary Evangelical Free

Church. Good news! We have a new meeting location: Bethany Church, 1835 19th Ave NW. Details follow in the

announcements section of this newsletter. Jan requested that cell phones be turned off, then reviewed the

benefits of our $25 membership: library (out of storage!), newsletter, volunteer opportunities and participation

in shows and classes. Minutes were approved as read.

Show & Tell: Members showed 2 bed quilts, 14 crib/wallhanging quilts, a table runner & Christmas

stockings made from vintage Japanese kimonos and 3 very solid fabric bowls.

New members and guests: 1 new member joined QS and 4 guests were welcomed.

Lotto Block: Oops, the May “Jitterbug” pattern didn’t make the newsletter, so there was no winner.

Some May blocks have been submitted, so if you’d still like to make one (or more), find the pattern on the

QS website and bring to the June meeting. The June lotto block is “Chinese Coins.” There will be both

May and June Lotto Block drawings in June.

Door Prizes: Linda Herr won 2 small patterns and Carol Spurr won 2 tickets to “Quilters.”

Tonight’s Program: Doug Leko, college student from Blaine and co-founder of Antler Quilt Designs. Much

laughter accompanied Doug’s articulate, informative, relaxed presentation and trunk show. He bravely shared his

first quilt from a camp experience at age 8 and progressed over ten years of quilting to his 4 newest patterns,

complete with multiple examples in various colorwaves, which are going to Market in Kansas City next week. He

likes experimenting with one block in many different pattern assemblies, finds the EQ7 computer program very

beginner-friendly, advises 3-ply, 100% cotton thread, and his favorite sewing machine is a straight-stitch-only

Juki – because it goes fast.

Motion to adjourn: At 8:50 p.m. by Elizabeth Hardy, seconded by Dianne Kee and approved.

Respectfully submitted by

Sharon Nichols, Evening Secretary

Sue Zahasky,

Program and Education Coordinator

“Quilters,” a musical theater production – June 13, 14, 15 and 16. A few more volunteers are still needed;

contact Sue Zahasky to find the right place for your energy. If you have already signed up, someone from

the committee will contact you soon with specifics. Lucky members, the QS door prize in May is 2 tickets

to “Quilters”! A total of four will be won; you can win two at the afternoon or two at the evening meeting.

Our July 6th Salad Supper will have a special program: Make It / Take It.

the prairie point ornaments. The ornaments are due back at the October meeting.

The library also will resume at that time. Please enter through the parking lot doors.

An Assistant Program/Education chair for the remainder of this year and all of 2013 is needed, contact

Brenda DeCook if interested.

meeting.

Festival of Trees

Wow, such a great response! Thanks to all that have picked up the pattern for the Prairie Point Ornaments, you

will have a great time making them. If you have not yet picked up your pattern, it will be available at the June

meetings. Please bring a 2.5 inch square of red or green fabric if you have not done so already. These squares will

be used to make the prairie points on the tree skirt.

Happy sewing,

Pam Geerdes, Marjie Blaisdell, and Jane Schmidt

Dearest Fellow Members of the Quilters' Sew-ciety:

I am writing to thank you for your contributions to the Benefit that was arranged on my behalf by some friends and work colleagues. The Quilters'

Sew-ciety members were included, along with a few other groups. I so appreciate your help financially and your caring and concern for me in my

battle with cancer. Due to the way the benefit was managed, I do not know who contributed by name, so I am writing a general thank you.

I am done with my treatments and am building strength while dealing with a few side effects. I hope to be cancer free once I have some more follow

up visits. I am very grateful to Mayo Clinic and their tremendous care.

Sincerely,

Kathy Robinson

A “PRAYER” –OF SORTS- FOR TOURISTS!!

Heavenly Father; look down on Your humble tourists who travel this earth walking around in their drip-dry underwear, wearing goofy hats, with cameras slung over shoulders, and carrying arms full of schlocky souvenirs and mailing postcards that don’t arrive until we’re already back home. We beseech You that our bus be on time—that all our group members be on time—that we receive our very own baggage at each stop. We pray that the phones work, that the operators speak our language, and that there is no mail from our children at the next hotel, causing us to cancel the rest of the trip. Give us strength to visit those endless museaums and churches and cathedrals, but if we skip historic monuments to take a nap after lunch, have mercy on us for our flesh is weak. (And after five cathedrals, they all start looking the same anyway.) Protect the wives from bargains they cannot afford. Lead them not into temptation for they know not what they do—or buy. Keep the husbands from looking at strange women and comparing them to their wives. And perhaps put bras on those endowed yournger women who walk by and cause husbands heads to swivel sharply enough for whiplash. Save the men from making fools of themselfes, and please do not forgive them their trespasses for they know exactly what they do. And when our tour is over, grant us the favor of finding someone who will look at our home movies and watch our slides and listen to our endless stories. We ask this in the name of Best Westerns, Ramada Inns, three-star hotels, and our local travel agency whose lying brochures got us going in the first place.

Quilters Ten Commandments

Thou shalt not do buttons.

Thou shalt sew ¼” seams.

Thou shalt leave no bolt unturned.

Thou shalt not rip – only un-sew!

Thou shalt not envy thy neighbor’s stitches.

Thou shalt never pass a quilt shop.

Thou shalt cook and clean but once a week.

Never quilt tomorrow what you can quilt today.

Thou shalt not covey thy neighbor’s stash.

Thou shalt not reveal funds spent on quilting supplies.
