1 Overview
S8500 Series Core Routing Switches, self-developed by Huawei-3Com, offer GE and
FE LPUs. GE LPUs include GP12, GT12, GP24, GT24 and GV48; FE LPUs include FT48
and FP20; hybrid LPUs include GT8P, P4G8 and F32G.
2 Characteristics
2.1 Flexible Configuration and Scalability
An FE/GE LPU works well in any service slot of the S8500. UP to five, eight and 12
FE/GE LPUs can be configured in the S8505/S8508/S8512 for high speed traffic
switching. Users can select FE/GE LPUs with different port densities in accordance with
actual applications and select optical modules depending on transmission distances.
An FE/GE LPU is connected to other LPUs in the system through the Crossbar. As a
result, any port services on one LPU or different LPUs can switch freely. In addition,
services on different ports can be aggregated to a port of an LPU for high speed long-haul
transmission.
2.2 Hot Swap Function
An FE/GE LPU is hot swappable. Users can online add or remove an LPU as
required without any service disruption on other LPUs. The management system can
detect and identify an LPU in real time and enable automatic configuration, thus
guaranteeing the availability of existing services to the largest extent. In addition, an
optical module can also implement hot swap function and realize Plug and Play. The
system detects the optical module in real time and notifies its state change to the
administrator.
2.3 Flexible Services Function Configuration
Users can configure FE/GE LPUs with different functions according to different
circumstances. Additionally, the S8500 supports hybrid LPUs such as P4G8, F32G and

GT8P, which can satisfy diversified requirements of users and also save user investments
to the largest extent.

2.4 High Port Density
The S8500 supports 48-port GE and 100M boards, i.e. GV48DB and FT48, and
supports up to 576 GE/FE ports.
2.5 Power Over Ethernet (POE)
With the POE function offered by the GV48 electrical LPU, the S8500 can supply
power for downstream devices through Ethernet twisted pairs, saving the investments on
power cabling for them. The S8500 supports up to 288 GE interfaces to provide the POE
function.

4.5 GV48 LPU
4.5.1 Introduction
The GV48 LPU offers 48 GE electrical interfaces with advanced POE function. Each
POE Ethernet port offers up to 15.4 W load power and can supply power for
802.3af-compliant power devices (PDs). An Ethernet port uses standard CAT5 cables
with a maximum transmission distance of 100 m.
