Written and spoken Spanish are very similar; each letter is usually pronounced in the same way each time you see it. It also helps that the pronunciation of many letters is very similar to English.

StressThe part of the word that is stressed tends to follow different patterns in Spanish than in English. In the examples below, the stress is shown in bold italics:

• If the word has a written accent, always put the stress on that part of the word: estación estasyon

• If the word ends in a vowel, n or s, always stress the next to the last syllable: ofi cina ofeeseena cierran syerran correos korreos

• If the word ends in a consonant other than n or s, always stress the last syllable: azul asool total total doctor doctor
