As I prepare to leave Widener and turn over the reins of
leadership to an outstanding new SBA Dean, I am sad to
leave new friends and, at the same time, happy to return to
retired life!
When I started this position last August, I was given a set of
expectations by Provost Steve Wilhite and I am pleased to
say that most of those expectations have been met. Howev-
er, nothing could have been accomplished without the coop-
eration of the SBA faculty, administration and staff.
The successes of the past year were a team accomplishment.
The strategic planning committee developed in record time a plan that aligns with and supports
the University’s plan.
The Promotion, Tenure and Retention committee revised policies to support the University’s
emphasis on high impact practices, civic engagement, and leadership.
A dedicated faculty member, working with the student affairs staff, designed a new living-
learning community for Business first-year students and it will be launched in the fall 2016
semester.
A team of faculty, administrators and staff have started implementation of plans to have new
and enhanced computing technology available for students by the fall 2016 semester.
The University marketing team, Enrollment Services, the SBA faculty, SBA students and
alumni, and SBA administrators collaborated to achieve what promises to be a banner year of
incoming freshmen.
Boring things, like position descriptions and formal policies, are in place for the new dean.
A new director was hired for the SBDC who is bringing a renewed spirit of collaboration with
the faculty.
Significant student-centered improvements have been made in the atrium and student lounge.
A senior faculty member was recognized with an Endowed Chair.
A capital campaign to endow the new Finance Lab is underway.
And, most satisfying to me, a welcoming advising space dedicated to the mission of student
success is everything I hoped it would be.
Widener’s School of Business Administration has a strong foundation and great
potential for success. I wish the School and Dean Ghosh the very best.

School of Business Administration Graduates Students Awards
Earning a graduate degree can be time consuming and difficult to do when one is faced with family con-
straints and the challenge of work and career. Our graduate students juggle many challenges as they com-
plete their advanced degrees. And we are proud to congratulate all of them!
Additionally we want to acknowledge the following students that achieved distinction and earned
Awards. We wish all of them continued success and the chance to follow their dreams.

On Saturday, May 21, 2016 the School of Business Administration observed one of the richest traditions the
SBA has started which is to invite friends, family and graduates to attend a breakfast before graduation. It is
a wonderful opportunity for students, parents and faculty to meet and mingle. Besides getting a great parking
space, everyone has a chance to relax and talk about their Widener experience. It’s so enjoyable to watch fac-
ulty meet parents and vice versa. Before they run out the door to receive their diplomas students can take as
many pictures as they want and parents can shed a few tears. This year we had record attendance and the
group was not that eager to face the impending rain. We wished all our graduates success and gave them all a
compass to find their way back to us.

Financial Literacy Day

Students enjoying the workshop Students involved in a discussion during the workshop
The fastest growing segment of people that have no idea about managing their finances is young people under
the ages of twenty five. Professor Frank Lordi has been at the forefront of changing that model. He knows
that educating people is the only way to ensure the next generation can maintain a healthy and productive
lifestyle. These days students as young as middle schoolers need to know about interest, what is a need versus
a want and how to maintain a budget. Financial literacy can open up a world to young people about investing.
The stock market has provided the best return over the last twenty years and students need to learn how to be
proficient investors.
Each year Professor Lordi and Hargadon help provide real world skills to their students, who in turn help
teach students from the Chester Charter School. This year Dan Ruggeri, Stephanie Wendling and Morgan
Stewart were some of the seniors that helped out. The teachers are so grateful for the learning opportunity and
of course everyone loves to eat in the café.

Global Sports Academy Project—Team
Seniors present their case study findings to Widener University faculty and staff on Project Day. At the
School of Business Administration, we prepare students for successful careers and leadership positions in
business. During their senior year, our young people engage in semester long projects that partner groups of
students with local companies to tackle a real-world business problem. To produce results, students must
call upon critical thinking, problem solving, collaboration and communication skills. In effect, they learn
by doing. Management 451 helps students develop skills that employers’ desire and they acquire competen-
cies that give them an edge over other applicants through a variety of hands- on learning. Such experiences
enhance student résumés, strengthen their portfolios and make them more valuable to potential employers.
Plus they love to get dressed up! This year the projects were diverse and complicated. Our students had to
learn to listen and adapt to conditions that were often not ideal. In the real world you don’t get all the infor-
mation and sometime people don’t get along. All these challenges will face them when they begin careers.
Our projects help them identify and learn strategies that will move them past obstacles.

Erica Trofa was an All Middle Atlantic Conference Sec-
ond team finalist in the MAC Conference for Track and
Field and graduated in May from the SBA. While at the
School of Business Erica distinguished herself as a stu-
dent with grace, poise and intelligence. While running
cross country, she also stood out as a student ambassador
and helped at many events where she exemplified what is
best about Widener. Erica was able to take advantage of
the travel abroad program at Widener and went to Spain
and Italy. In addition, she worked at various intern posi-
tions in the sports field which helped her solidify a mar-
keting position with the Phillies. Dean Morgan, Erica

James graduates with a degree in Finance and a job with
the Boeing Company. He secured his job by first work-
ing as an intern with the company and then being offered
full time employment. He served in the Presidential Ser-
vice Corps and the PSC/Bonner Leader program which is
comprised of 60 undergraduates. Students in the PSC/
Bonner Leader program commit to serving 300 hours of
community service per year in the city of Chester. He ran
track and also worked part-time for Boeing. James will
start his career in the Ridley location.
Taylor Church first came to Widener in the summer be-
fore her freshman year as a participant in the SBA Sum-
mer Camp. While Taylor enjoyed the experience, she was
leery of attending college and did not want to leave home.
Her mother dragged her to campus and made her get out
of the car. Susan Church, an alum, said that her experi-
ence at Widener totally changed her. Taylor was the start-
ing catcher on the Pride softball team, a member of Beta
Alpha Si and Pi sigma Epsilon and contributed in many
recruitment events to help build the Widener brand. She
starts at PWC this summer, using her Informatics degree
to help clients understand the process of business change.

Farewell Dean Morgan
As an interim dean, the challenge is to be effective in a short period of time, while staying true to the goals of
the Strategic Plan. Catherine Morgan, our interim dean, has proven she can make changes, take charge and
accomplish goals in our Strategic Plan in the span of one year. Arriving late summer Catherine began meeting
with her faculty and staff and quickly developed a plan of action. Catherine will spend time with Dean Ghosh
and also provide her with a guide book for success. Catherine will leave for Florida in mid-July, and we ap-
preciate her help, guidance and hard work.
According to Professor Kenn Tacchino, “Catherine managed to do the impossible and make it look easy. Us-
ing unbridled energy and unparalleled wisdom she transformed the School of Business in a very short time.
Our goals are now more aligned with the University's goals; and the changes will serve to improve the student
experience. She created logical and effective systems that will keep us on track in the future. Her vision and
ability to get things done leaves the School of Business and the University a much better place than before she
arrived. We will miss her.”
According to Dean Vike, “The intent in establishing the Advising Center was to strengthen a culture commit-
ted to furthering student success. In the one semester it has been up and running we have created a vibrant set-
ting that is welcoming and informative with a high level of student, staff and faculty interaction.”
According to Professor Jose Proenca, “Dean Morgan brought a renewed sense of energy and engagement into
the School of Business Administration. This was most evident at Widener Days, where her ability to use hu-
mor to connect with prospective students and their parents, and the enthusiastic participation of faculty and
alumni in the recruitment process, resulted in significant increases in enrollments. Catherine is an effective
leader. Her soft spoken yet determined leadership style inspired us to many accomplishments this year.”
