A Success Series Review

Greetings Linda~

Thank you for the opportunity to review the new Success Series. It was truly an

inspiring experience to study these DVDs.

As I reviewed the materials and watched the programs I took volumes of notes.

My intention was to give a review expounding on the knowledge available to

anyone willing to sit down and learn. To delve into the valuable insights the

Parelli's have discovered and presented through the Horsenality DVD. Or

expound on the logic behind the proper (and natural) use of round pens as

discussed in the Liberty DVD. Perhaps, I thought, I should discuss the themes of

safety and fun - providing the tools for people to rekindle "the dream" - that run

throughout the Series. Or maybe a review on how having a solid foundation and

partnership with your horse can lead naturally to all of the advanced maneuvers

of performance sports. All of these topics and many more throughout the 10

DVDs are important concepts that make this innovative series a must buy for any

horse owner.

However, the one feature that kept me enthralled with watching DVD after DVD

was the way in which Pat & Linda Parelli presented the information. With the

kindness one expresses to close family and friends the Parelli's essentially came

into my home and shared their secrets to success with horses. Through easy to

understand discussions, mixed in with thought provoking concepts that I would

expect from trusted mentor, Pat Parelli answered questions I didn't know I had.

With enthusiasm, Linda Parelli provided proof that it is possible to "live the

dream" through dedication to learning the natural way to be with horses.

The Parelli's passion for horses, respect for one another, eagerness to learn, and

dedication to sharing their knowledge has produced some of the most cutting

edge educational materials available to horse enthusiasts. The release of the

Success Series proudly continues that tradition.

Warm Regards,

Question:

I have owned my Tennessee Walker for 1 yr

and I love him to pieces. He is confident, kind,

comes to me at the gate and is a wonderful

trail horse. He did have 1 annoying habit when

I purchased him and that is wanting to eat on

the trail. He sometimes dives quite

aggressively and he doesn't just grab as he

passes, sometimes he stops and dives for the

leaves. I tried being polite at first, then started

asking more aggressively, tried beating him to

the punch when I see an opportunity arising

for him to eat and speeding him up before we

get to the feasting places so he has something

to keep his mind occupied, but nothing really

seems to do the trick yet. I have been trying

to keep my anger in check, but he's testing me

no doubt.

I would be thrilled if you can give me some

help with this and get us turned in the right

direction.

Answer:

This is certainly a frustrating problem for a lot

of people. When you look at it from your

horse's point of view though, he's probably in

heaven when he sees all the wonderful greens

he doesn't get to have in his stall or pasture! I

would take him grazing before my trail ride,

d th th id I'd t h hi t b

Serving the Horse World of the Westand then on the ride I'd teach him to grab a

snack as he keeps walking. This means that

you focus on him walking vs on him grabbing

at the grass. Your attitude would be "Hey!

You've stopped walking." Then you'd go politely

yet firmly through your phases to get him to

move his feet again. Even if it is only a few

steps before he stops for some more, calmly

and smilingly go through your phases again,

each time, for as many times as it takes. Make

sure you don't anticipate him stopping, you

have to trust him!

Horses are so clever, they feel you tensing up

or starting to push them and now they think

"I've got ya!" These Left Brain horses are

always trying to get the upper hoof and

rattling your emotions is a very effective way

to do that. So keep smiling and play the game

back only better!

I rode Coban again this morning and

he still showed a lot of signs of being

unconfident. But I tried not to argue

with him and kept trotting where he

wanted to go and being a passenger.

Towards the end he felt looser and

started snorting and lowering his

head. I then started doing a bit of

'your idea, my idea', I will keep

working with that.

I learned this weekend that I was

getting too goal orientated i.e. riding

the canter! I kept thinking that Coban should be able to do this without a

problem and that I was holding him back. Now I realise that Coban has a real

issue with the canter, so I will take a step back and listen to Coban more. Thanks

for pointing that out to me. I will do lots of Passenger Lessons at the trot!

I just sat down and watched the latest Savvy DVD. Wow! It fits in perfectly what

you were talking about this weekend. The fact that horses show different

horsenalities in different situations is so revealing. I now have to learn how to

handle Cobans different horsenalities. I do believe that Coban is the right horse

for me, looking at the horsenality chart.

I had a great time and learned alot.

Cheers,

Marja Jarvis, Cudgewa, Victoria.
