In Town 1. AINSLEY 30 Maxwell Street, Kyneton Pam Leaver A relatively new town garden which flows down to the Campaspe River and features many perennials, interesting trees and shrubs. New native plantings on the river slopes, vegetable gardens and fruit trees with chicken pens are also a feature. Open: Sept 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 10 – 10-4pm. No dogs please. Buses welcome by appointment only. Entry: $5 pp, $10 including Devonshire tea available at weekends. Proceeds Langley Primary School. Ph 5422 1815.

2. ELMLEA 98 Wedge Street, Kyneton C & J Nielsen A large garden with expansive lawn. Mature trees line the drive and throughout. Gardens have iris, roses and an abundance of daffodils and other spring bulbs. Raised stone wall gardens harbour many varieties of hellebore, accessed by winding paths. Open: Sat Sept 3. 3. GLEN-OLNEY 23 Epping Street, Kyneton Ken & Joy Robbins An English-style garden on a gentle hillside. This large town garden has evolved over the years into a picturesque blend of mature trees, ground cover, hellebores and daffodils. Open: Sept 3, 4, 10 and 11. 10-5pm - Buses and groups by appointment. Entry: Adults $4 per person. Proceeds to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation and Kyneton Daffodil & Arts Festival. Ph 0419 569 404. 4. JINDABA 6 Tattersall Drive, Kyneton Joan & Alan Willis The one acre garden has been developed over 20 years. It features mature trees, shrubbery, lily ponds and rose beds. At the back of the garden there is a productive vegetable garden and green house. Open: Sept Fri 9 and Sun 11. 10-4pm Entry: $5 pp children under 14 free. 5. KYNETON TRANSITION HUB ELEVEN EDIBLE GARDENS– Open Sept 3 only A. Community Garden at Kyneton Secondary College Epping Street.

Follow the signs to the garden on the east side of the grounds.

Based on permaculture and sustainability principles. Wicking beds, compost tea

brewing, biochar making.

B. Hand to Ground (Emily and Alex) 31 Mission Hill Rd Baynton (18 mins scenic

drive from Kyneton) Begun 18 months ago with living hand to ground, using local materials, local resources,

worm farms, deep bed compost, insect attracting plants, Hugelkultur, poly tunnel, Warré

beekeeping, productive free range eggs and chickens.

C. This garden is unable to open – is replaced by garden of Deborah and Rob

added at 33 Clowes St Malmsbury

Deborah and Rob’s garden on the verge immediately in front of the house was designed

as a showcase for edible and medicinal plantings, while maintaining an attractive

aesthetic. The conditions are quite harsh and not all plants have survived; they do a lot

of mulching for summer but still need to water as well.

The plants include a row of clipped bay trees, fruit – dwarf quinces and peach, cherries,

goji berry, Chilean guava, pomegranate and vegetables such as artichoke, potatoes and a

variety of herbs.

Worm farm, water conservation experiments, composting experiments, raised beds,

mixing food and flowers.

An immature new garden – a work in progress. Bird-proof orchard with 15 espaliered

fruit trees; chickens for pest and weed control; berry fruits; vegetable beds; composting;

green manures and living mulches; citrus in a frosty climate; rainwater harvesting; and

extensive use of recycled materials in landscaping.

H. Mary and Paul 71 Wedge St Kyneton

Plant and seed swapping, mulching, hand water, dig in kitchen scraps direct. A 1950s

house with daffodils and perennials throughout the garden and on the nature-strip. Has

several distinct edible garden areas kept small to save on water, the design is about easy

access and harvest.

7 acres, adopting permaculture techniques with composting, chickens, netting, native

bee hotel, biochar, wicking beds, fruit trees, raspberry patch. Innovative use of in-

J. Kyneton Community Learning Centre 34 Mollison St Kyneton Small garden with mostly wicking beds, provides produce for Kyneton Community

Lunches, run by community.

K. Malmsbury Primary School 28 Cameron St Malmsbury

The school is proud to show its emerging garden using permaculture principles,

donations of heritage plants and seeds gratefully received, run by students, parents and

community.

Open: 3 & 4 Sept (Kyneton Primary School P & F will serve teas on these days), open also 7 Sept. No pets. Buses by arrangement – bus visitors need to walk up steep drive. Entry: $5 pp over 16. 8. KYNETON BOTANICAL GARDENS Cnr Mollison & Clowes Street Kyneton Ann Tomlinson One of the finest Botanic Gardens in Victoria's goldfields dating back to 1858. BRINGALBIT 512 Sidonia Road, Sidonia Via Kyneton The Fox Family Historic property is a farm and country retreat. 1870's granite homestead with 10 acres of parkland and gardens developed over 150 years. 11. HIGHBANK 152 Donnelly Road, Kyneton Tonia Todman Highbank has a 162 year history. It features drystone walls and hedges, ancient trees, gardens and large rose fields established. It remains a work in progress, but its shape, colour and texture have been re-discovered; important elements that continue to bring a sense of the seasons. Open: 10am-4pm Sept 2,3,4 & 9,10 & 11. Buses most welcome. Buses and parking on Roadside near stone gateposts on Donnelly Road Entry: $3 per person. 12. LANDING FIELDS 6 Kyneton Springhill Road, Kyneton Carolyn & Peter A thoughtfully designed newly-created garden that is a work in progress. It will appeal to those interested in viewing or establishing a friendly large garden, utilising both hard and soft surfaces with a mix of native and exotic hardy perennials and shrubs. Open: Fri 9 Sep and Sat 10 Sep only 11-4pm. Adequate road side parking for all vehicles including buses. 13. MOSAIC GARDEN 60 Dettmann’s Lane Kyneton Geraldine Phelan An acre of rural garden, built in and around existing large eucalypts and other natives,

also exotic trees and shrubs. Planting of thousands of bulbs, numerous varieties, and a

large numbers of perennials, propagated from seed. Mosaic Exhibition on

simultaneously with demonstrations daily.

Open every day 10am-4pm school or other groups, buses welcome.

14. NEW PARK 971 Tylden-Woodend Road, Tylden

Alastair and Phoebe MacLeod Set around one of the oldest bluestone homes in the Tylden/Woodend district, the

garden at New Park (circa 1860) displays dozens of varieties of daffodils. Cloud pruned

hedge. Both formal and informal gardens span 12 acres, incorporating three historic

fountains and a picturesque lake. Has a cricket pitch with pavilion.

Open: Sun 4 and Sun 11 Sept – 10am – 4pm.

15. ROSEBERY HILL Pastoria Road Pipers Creek Barry & Ruth Murphy 10 acres of mature trees, shrubs and thousands of naturalised daffodils. Long avenues of Poplar, Roman Cypress, Red and Cork Oaks, Box hedge and dwarf Spruce. Rare plants, a more than century old Cork Oak, and quirky topiary. 16. SHERARA 382 Shepherd’s Hill Road, Lauriston David & Sandra Rowland This spacious garden overlooks the valley of Shepherd’s Hut Creek where the Sherara Alpacas graze. A formal structure based on circles with rock walls, sinuous hedges, roses, blossom trees and massed daffodils. A separate fully enclosed orchard and kitchen garden and an olive grove. Photography exhibition by Chevelle Williams, local prize-winning photographer. Open: 10am-4pm 2, 3, 4, 7, 9 10 Sept. Buses welcome by appointment only. Entry: $5 pp. Pets on leads. Water hazard. 17. SPRINGHILL NURSERY 1 Trentham Road Tylden (Cnr of Spring Hill Road) Glenn Boxshall & Sandy Mitchell Well established and extensive award winning Nursery and Gardens open every day. Mature espaliered fruit trees and orchard and a Gallery of oil paintings from local artist as well as a huge selection of plants, pots and garden features of all kinds. Teldorado is the bloke’s backyard. It features the two worlds project, wood fired pizza oven, general store, outdoor area and kitchen, stage, bar and plenty of ideas to take home. 21. MALMSBURY BOTANIC GARDENS Calder Highway, Malmsbury On the banks of the Coliban River, heritage gardens mature trees, lake and fountain. View the magnificent 1860 Malmsbury Viaduct.
