Dear Prospective Student-Athlete:As a prospective student-athlete, you may have the athletic potential to com-

pete at the Division I level. If so, you probably will be exposed to an enormousamount of recruitment activities from universities across the country.

Throughout the recruitment process, coaches will reference various NCAArules and regulations. The rules are designed for various reasons. The mostimportant of which are to ease the pressures on prospective student-athletes andto level the playing field so that all universities operate within the same guide-lines.

During the recruiting process you may have the following questions:• When and how often can I visit an institutions campus?• When, where and how often can a coach telephone me?• How many times can a coach observe me in practice and/or competition?• What academic criteria must I meet to be eligible to compete at the Division I ?

The answers to these questions and more can be obtained from the Universityof Miami Compliance Office or the NCAA by requesting the NCAA Guide for theCollege-Bound Student-Athlete. The guide may be provided to a prospective stu-dent-athlete at any time. The guide addresses issues related to Divisions I, II andIII academic eligibility, financial aid, recruitment and more.

To receive a copy of the guide call the NCAA Hotline at 1-800-638-3731 orrequest it from the University of Miami coach who is recruiting you.

Please remember that since violations of NCAA rules during your recruitmentcould jeopardize your athletic eligibility, it is important for you and your parentsto be informed and to ask questions throughout the recruiting process.

Best of luck and GO HURRICANES!Sincerely,

Tony HernandezAssistant Athletic Director for Compliance

Coaches and authorized institutional staff members are the only individuals who mayrecruit you. Representatives of athletic interests (boosters) may not call, write or make in-per-son contact with you anywhere for the purpose of recruiting you to a university and participat-ing in athletics.

When can a coach contact me?Off Campus Contact

A coach can arrange a face-to-face meeting, off the University’s campus, with you begin-ning July 1st following the completion of your junior year in high school.

Telephone Calls• In all sports other than football and basketball, a coach may call a prospect once duringthe month of March of the prospect’s junior year in high school and then on or after July 1 follow-ing the completion of the prospect’s junior year in high school. Only one phone call may bemade per week to a prospect or the prospect’s family. • In the sport of football, a coach may initiate one telephone call to a prospect during themonth of May of the prospect’s junior year. Additional telephone calls to a prospect may not bemade before September 1 of the beginning of the prospect’s senior year in high school, limitedto one call per week.• In the sport of men’s basketball, coaches may make one telephone call to a prospect duringthe month of March during the prospect’s junior year. A coach may then call a prospect on orafter June 21 of the prospect’s junior year, followed by three additional phone calls in the monthof July, with no more than one call per week. • In the sport of women’s basketball, one telephone call during the month of March of theprospect’s junior year in high school and then one telephone call may be made to a prospect onor after June 21 of the prospect’s junior year in high school. In addition, only three telephonecalls to a prospect may be made during the month of July, with no more than one call per week.• In the following circumstances unlimited calls to a prospect are permitted: (1) during thefive days immediately preceding an official visit to the University of Miami, (2) on the initialdate for signing the National Letter of Intent and the two days following the signing date, and(3) on the day of a coach’s off-campus contact with a prospect.• For all sports, coaches may receive telephone calls placed by a prospect at the prospect’sexpense at anytime, including before July 1 following the prospect’s junior year in high school.

LettersLetters and recruiting information may be sent to you starting September 1st at the begin-

ning of your junior year in high school.

What is a Contact?A contact is any face-to-face encounter between a prospect or the prospect’s parent(s) or

legal guardian and an institutional staff member or athletic representative during which anydialogue occurs in excess of an exchange of a greeting. NOTE: At the Division I level, athleticrepresentatives (boosters) may not contact you for the purpose of recruiting.

What can a school offer me to attend their University? You (or your family) may not receive any benefit, inducement or arrangements such as

cash, clothing, cars, gifts or loans to encourage you to sign a National Letter of Intent or toattend a NCAA school.

A University may offer you a one-year scholarship that covers room and board, tuition andfees, and required course-related books, or any part of these. The institution can recommendthat this aid is renewed each year, as is the general practice at the University of Miami but thisrenewal is not guaranteed. In addition, they can offer you quality academic and medical sup-port, as well as the opportunity to compete for one of the nation’s top programs.

What can I do during this process?Enjoy your high school years and work hard both in the classroom and in your sport. At the

beginning of your junior year you should sign up for the NCAA Clearinghouse. Your high schoolguidance office can provide you with the information to register.

“The building of a facility like Cobb Stadium is something the University, thetrack and field program and the entire South Florida community can be proud of,”said Ward. “Due to the generosity and continued support from Ambassador andMrs. Cobb and the Cobb Family, the University of Miami will continue to competewith the nation’s elite track and field programs.”

From the Cobbs, it takes on a special sig-nificance. On behalf of the entire University community, and especially our stu-dents, I express heartfelt appreciation.”

“I am very pleased that our family is able to recognize Chuck’s many years ofservice to the University of Miami in this manner,” Mrs. Cobb said. “We have longfelt that the University, by its natural location, is perfectly situated to be a greatvenue for these two sports. We hope this facility will be a catalyst for new tradi-
