In addition to our brothers and sisters in the ADNE, we are very excited towelcome Bishop David Hicks of the Reformed Episcopal Church to ourSynod. It is an honor to share this time with him as he shares his heart withus both for his diocese and the Anglican Communion. The ReformedEpiscopal Church has been a partner with us in the Anglican Church inNorth America since the founding of our province, and we are thankful forthe opportunity to share this time together.

About Bp. David Hicks:

David Hicks was born in Salem County, New Jersey,in 1963. He was raised in a Christian family, and fromthe time that he could read, he evidenced a deep loveof the Scriptures. After graduating from high school,he attended Valley Forge University, where hededicated himself to studying the Scriptures in theoriginal languages.

Desiring to pursue a teaching career at a bible collegeor seminary, he attended Westminster Theological

Seminary, Philadelphia. He earned a master's degree in 1986. It wasduring this time he also sensed a specific call to pastoral ministry in theEpiscopal Diocese of New Jersey. That call was later realized through theReformed Episcopal Church.

In God's providence, David's life took an unexpected path when hebecame a legislative aide to New Jersey State Assemblyman Jack Collins, and he spent ten years working in New Jersey politics. At the time, itseemed that this was a departure from what God had called him to do;however, in retrospect it is evident that God used that time andexperience to strengthen him in administrative and personnel skills, which were to be of tremendous use to him at a later point in life.

At the end of this time, he sensed a fresh calling to serve in parochialministry and was ordained in the Reformed Episcopal Church. For twoyears he was involved in a church planting effort in New Jersey, andthen he answered the call to serve as rector of St. Paul's ReformedEpiscopal Church, Oreland, Pennsylvania, in 1995.

Many things happened during that time. David met his wonderful wifeLisa, who is an oncology nurse at Fox Chase Cancer Center,Philadelphia. He also began using his teaching skills at ReformedEpiscopal Seminary, Blue Bell, Pennsylvania, teaching Biblical Greek, atfirst and additional New Testament courses over the years. He alsoearned a Master of Sacred Theology degree at the Lutheran TheologicalSeminary, Philadelphia, and enrolled in a PhD program at WestminsterSeminary. He is currently finishing his dissertation.

In 2005, the Diocese of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic elected himbishop co-adjutor of the diocese, and then he assumed the office ofbishop ordinary in 2008, a position he continues to hold. By virtue of hisoffice as bishop, he is the Chancellor of Reformed Episcopal Seminary.

When the Reformed Episcopal Church became a founding jurisdiction ofthe Anglican Church in North America (ACNA) in 2009, Bishop Hickswas received into the ACNA College of Bishops. He has served as amember of the Prayer Book and Common Liturgy Task Force andcurrently serves as the chair of the Holy Orders Task Force.

David and Lisa reside in Oreland, Pennsylvania and have three grownchildren.

Last week, Bishop Bill attended the 135th Council of the Reformed EpiscopalChurch's Diocese of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic (NEMA). The meetingtook place at St. Paul's Anglican Church in Oreland, PA on November5th and 6th and included worship, teaching, and business meetings for thediocese.

NEMA's bishop, The Rt. Rev. David Hicks, gave a warm welcome to theADNE's bishop as both dioceses celebrated our continuing unity in Christand our mutual work as founding members of the ACNA.

The event provided multiple opportunities for Bp. Bill to fellowship with Bp.David and his clergy. On Wednesday night, both bishops were able to sharea meal together and catch up. Thursday was the council's main day, whichbegan with Eucharist and ended with a clergy banquet. During the mainsession, Bp. Bill was able to address the clergy and delegates, encouragingthem to continue in our common faith and mission; during the banquet headdressed the clergy and their wives.

Sharing these diocesan events are significant moments of unity within theAnglican Communion and the full body of Christ. The ADNE continues inthat spirit by having the honor of receiving Bp. David Hicks intotheir fellowship during their annual synod, November 21, 2015, where hewill be the guest speaker.

SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 8, 2015 - This past weekend, Bishop Billvisited Christ the Redeemer, Danvers. On Saturday afternoon he met withclergy to review the ordination process and the requirements currently inplace for aspirants, postulants, and candidates, after which he attended theCTR Fall Festival, where he was able to share in storytelling at the campfiremeeting for the youth group, and all the youth shared their stories ofchanged lives in Christ and their ongoing spiritual journey.

On Sunday, Bp. Bill preached at all three CTR services and celebratedEucharist during the last service; he also taught at the 10 o'clock adultsunday school. His sermon for that day focused on the text fromHebrews declaring that Christ died "once for all" as a sacrifice through whichhe entered Heaven. It was through this act of sacrifice, as both high priestand victim, that Christ definitively brought us to God and brought God tous, doing away with the need for future sacrifices. Therefore, Jesus remainsthe only high priest of the people of God, and the priesthood of the Church, rather than adding to that one act, shares in the task of pointing to andcelebrating that act and the one who performed it.

After the service, Bp. Bill was also able to spend time with the ordinands atCTR to discuss steps in their discernment process, and he challenged them inregards to their spiritual life, particularly the need for the power of the Spiritto be bound up with both their mission and ministry as members of theclergy.
