1. INTRODUCTION

This report details the operation and interpretation of a fixed-wing airborne

Electromagnetic and Magnetic survey flown for BMP-UTAH Mines Ltd. The

system used was the QUESTEM Digital Time Domain EM system.

The survey was commissioned by W.J. Mitchell, Exploration Manager of

BHP-UTAH Mines Ltd. on August 7,1990. Terence J. Mcconnell, Geophysicist for

Questor Surveys, supervised the data compilation and interpretation through to the

completion of the project in April 1991.

The survey consists of two blocks, A and B, where Block B overlies the western

third of Block A. Both blocks comprised a total of 1,172 kilometres of traverse and

control lines. These were flown on between the dates of October 10, 1990, and

January 21,1991, using Thunder Bay, Ontario as the survey operations base. The

survey was delayed due to severe weather conditions. No flying was attempted

between November 5,1990 and January 11,1991.

PROJECT LOCATIONk

The survey area is located approximately 160 kilometers north of Thunder Bay,

Ontario. The area is bounded by latitudes 490 48' N and 490 53' N and by

longitudes 890 38' W and 890 51' W. (See Rgure 1).

3a. Survey Personnel

The survey crew was made up of experienced Questor employees: Geophysicist M. Pearson l H . Skinner

The flight path recovery was completed at the survey base, while the final data compilation and drafting was carried out by Questor at its Brantford, Ontario office. The report was completed by Terence J. Mcconnell, Geophysicist for Questor Surveys Limited.

Peter Diorio of BMP-UTAH Mines was the technical authority for the project.

3b. Instruments

A Shorts Skyvan, C-GDRG, equipped with the following instruments was used for the survey:

A Geometrics G-803 digitally recording Base Magnetometer was used to monitor and record the diurnal magnetic changes.

The equipment, such as the QUESTEM system, magnetometer and radar altimeter were regularly calibrated at the beginning and end of each survey flight as well as in mid-flight, whenever necessary.

The continuous chart speed of the RMS recorder was set at 15 cm/minute.

3c. Production

The flight line spacing over the block was 150 meters. Table 1 summarizes the kilometers flown within the survey block as well as the line direction.

The products delivered by Questorto BHP-Utah are:

a) Master topographic base map, scale 1:10,000;

b) Clear overlay with flight lines electromagnetic information, associated magnetic peaks and interpretation of results;

c) Contours of the total magnetic field on a clear overlay; scale 1:10,000;

d) Contours of the calculated vertical magnetic gradient on a clear overlay, scale 1:10,000;

e) Colour contours of total magnetic field and vertical derivative;

f) Line profiles for each flight line to include:

l) Digital grids of mag and vertical gradient on 3 1/2" PC disks in Geopak RTI workstation format.

3e. Survey Procedure

During the survey, the aircraft maintained a terrain clearance as close to 122 meters as possible, with the receiver coil (bird) at approximately 55 meters above the ground surface. In areas of substantial topographic relief and large population, the aircraft height may exceed 122 meters for safety reasons. The height of the bird above the ground is also influenced by the aircraft's air speed, which was maintained at 110 to 120 knots, while on survey.

Whenever possible, the traverse lines were flown in alternate flight directions (e.g.: north then south) to facilitate the interpretation of dipping conductors. When the traverse line spacing exceeded 250 meters for a continuous distance of 2.0 km or more. The gap is normally filled with an appropriately spaced fill-in line at a later date.

During the course of the survey, the following were recorded:

1. Electromagnetic results represented by fourteen channels of successively increasing time delays after cessation of the exciting pulse;

2. A record of the terrain clearance as provided by radar altimeter;3. A record of the barometric altitude above sea level of the aircraft;4. A photographic record of the terrain passing below the aircraft as obtained

from a 35 mm camera;5. Time markers impressed synchronously on the photographic and

geophysical records to facilitate accurate positioning on photomosaic^;6. Airborne magnetometer data;7. Ground base station magnetometer data;8. A representation of the amount of atmospheric activity;9. A record of the amount of bird motion with respect to the aircraft; and

10. 60 Hz monitor data which provides an indication of whether results are due to culture.

3f. Magnetic Diurnal

Diurnal variations in the earth's magnetic field had been recorded to an accuracy of 0.5 nT using a digitally recording base station equipped with a Geometrics G-803 Proton Precession Magnetometer. It was monitored periodically during the day for severe diurnal changes (magnetic storms). Non-linear variations in the diurnal field exceeding 5 nT per minute were considered to be a magnetic storm.

The base station magnetometer was set up in a magnetically quiet area at the Thunder Bay airport.

4. DATA COMPILATION

4a. Data Recovery

The Ilight path of the aircraft is recorded by a strip camera on black and white (125 ASA, 35 mm) film which is exposed continuously during flight at a rate of 5 mm/sec. The aperture setting on the camera can be manually adjusted by the operator during flight, assuring the proper exposure of the film. The camera is fitted with a wide angle 18 mm lens. Fiducial numbers are imprinted on the film, marked onto the analogue records and recorded digitally at the same instant.

The flight line headings are opposite on adjacent lines, which are normally flown sequentially in an "S" pattern. The navigation references are flight strips at a scale of 1:10,000 which are made from enlarged aerial photos. The equipment operator enters the flight details information into the digital data system. This information includes line number, time, fiducial range and other pertinent flight information. This flight line information is compared to the film, analogue records and the magnetic base station recording at the completion of the survey flight.

The film and all records are developed, edited and checked at the completion of each flight. Recovery of the flight track is carried out by comparing the negative of the 35 mm film to the topographic features of the base map. Coincident features are picked and plotted on a mosaic base map. At a later date, these points are transferred to the master topographic maps on which the final results are drafted. Points are picked at an average interval of 2 kilometers whenever is possible.

A TRIMBLE TANS GPS Satellite Navigation System was used on occasion during the survey. A lack of continual satellite coverage prevented it from being used for the whole survey. The positional information provided by the GPS was used as a back up to the visually recovered flight path.

These procedures are performed on the survey site daily by the geophysicist, so that the data quality and progress may be measured objectively. Reflights for covering navigational gaps and other deficiencies are usually flown on the following day.

The analogue records are inspected for coherence with specifications, and anomalies are selected for classification and plotting. Selected anomalous conductors are positioned by plotting their fiducial positions less the lag factor.

4b. Computer Processing

The completed flight path on the topographic base is digitized on a flat-bed digitizer at the Questor head office using the picked point co-ordinates. The recovery is then routinely verified by a computer programme 'speed check1 , which

flags any abnormalities in the distance per fiducial unit between picked points on a traverse line. The GPS positional information was then added, where available, to provide continuous coverage between the picked points. As a final check, the rough magnetic contour maps and magnetic images are examined for irregularities that could be attributed to recovery errors.

5. ELECTROMAGNETIC DATA

5a. Presentation

The flight strips for the navigation of the survey area are photomosaics constructed from air photographs. The mosaics were uncontrolled at a scale of 1:10,000. The

final data is presented on a topographic map base.

The QUESTEM anomaly map presents the information extracted from the analog records. This consists chiefly of the peak anomaly positions and response characteristics, surficial responses, up-dip responses, and magnetic anomaly locations. In effect, these represent the primary data analysis. The symbols are explained in the map legend, but the following observations are presented:

Position of peak anomaly;Conductance;Amplitude of channel 4 response;Position and peak amplitude of associated magnetic anomalies;Where present, surficial, up-dip and poorly defined responses have beenidentified with a unique symbol.

The interpretation maps outline the geophysical interpretation of the electromagnetic, magnetic, geological and physiographic data. Bedrock conductors have axis locations and dip directions, if they are interpretable. The anomalous zones which are recommended for follow-up have a reference label assigned, to which additional comments and recommendations are directed in the Interpretation section of this report. Surficial response sources are mapped out by boundaries showing their interpreted lateral extent.

The following list summarizes the interpretation presentation: Bedrock conductor axis, probable and possible; Conductor dip;Anomalous conductors selected for ground evaluation with reference number; Bedrock conductor, depth estimates (where possible).

The survey results can be classified into the following categories and are represented on the accompanying interpretation maps by symbols described below:

a) Bedrock conductors - solid axes;b) Weak bedrock conductors - dashed axes;c) Surficial conductors.

Formational Conductors:

Bedrock conductors due to formational horizons are distinguished by aligned electromagnetic responses in long linear conductors. These formational conductors often form market horizons which may be of exploration interest.

Surficial Conductors:

The symbol "S" and the diamond shape on the interpretation map designates this type of conductor which is generally due to surficial material. These conductors often have low conductances, and 1 to 6 channel responses. In addition, the transient decays are typical of horizontal lying conductive sources. The longer (elongated) axes of the surficial bodies have no correlation with magnetics or other regional conductive trends.

Where there is some doubt concerning the possibility of a bedrock conductor response superimposed on the surficial, these responses have been plotted with a "poorly defined" symbol.

Some of our selective criteria for distinguishing zones of interest are:

Isolated horizon or offset from formational conductors; Conductivity increase; Presence of structural features; Magnetic correlation.

Follow-up decisions for the bedrock targets should be based on favourable geology and previous drilling results.

5b. Conductivity and Depth Analysis

The conductivity-thickness products of planar horizontal, and thin steeply dipping conductors are proportional to the time constant of the secondary field electromagnetic transient decay. This transient may be closely approximated by an exponential function for which the conductivity-thickness product (TCP) is inversely proportional to the log of the difference of two channel amplitudes at their respective sample times.

These response functions are presented in the form of graphs in which the amplitudes of the channels of the QUESTEM response are plotted on a logarithmic scale against conductivity. The relative amplitudes of the secondary response, at any given conductivity, may be accurately related to the depth of a conductor below the surface. These are typically referred to as Palacky nomograms. These are available for a number of conductor geometries.

It has been found that the shape of the decay transient and its amplitude is usually unique to a particular geometry. Therefore, a good "fit" of the peak response amplitude to one nomogram will define its origin.

The 900 nomogram was utilized exclusively to determine the apparent conductances of the responses obtained from the survey. This procedure is valid for near vertical conductors, within a dip range of 45-1350 , relative to the aircraft flight direction.

Although the conductor depth can be interpreted from nomograms, the short strike lengths and the variability of conductor geometry may result in the over-estimation of depths.

The electromagnetic system depth capability is well characterized for a vertical plate which is 200 meters deep with a strike length of 600 meters and 300 meters depth extent. The effective penetration depth increases for a dipping target and decreases for a smaller size conductor.

Depths were only determined for responses which appear to fit the interpretation model - a thick, near vertical plate with a strike length of greater than 500 meters. Qualifications for these determinations are summarized in the Interpretation section.

The depths for 10 and 12 channel anomalies were corrected for the interpreted conductor strike intersection relative to the line direction and the effects of aircraft altitude deviations from a flight altitude of 120 meters.

An anomaly listing at the back of this report summarizes each anomalous response in a numerical sequence, in addition to the standard anomaly parameters, an "anomaly type" classification has been added. The letters correlate with the plotted symbols according to Table 3.

6. GEOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE

6a. Geology

The survey area covers the western one third of a small greenstone belt in which numerous showings of sulphides have been reported. An overview is shown on OGS map 2442; details at 1/4 mile to the inch are seen on OGS maps P456, P467, P458, and P459.

A series of volcanics, sediments and intrusives, all Archean in age, comprise the geologic sequence. About three quarters of the area is underlain by mafic and felsic metavolcanics. These are interfingered by metasediments, mostly at the west end, and surrounded at the west and south by intrusive granitic rocks. Some thin layers of early mafic to ultramafic intrusives lie in the centre of the area.

Showings of pyrite, pyrrhotite, graphite, sphalerite, have been reported in the mafic and felsic volcanics.

6b. Interpretation

The QUESTEM survey has discovered several hundred anomalies on a line by line basis, and these have been grouped together to form twenty or so conductor axes. These have been graded as major, intermediate and minor conductors and marked as such on the interpretation map.

The major conductor axes are briefly described below to assist in setting a priority for further investigations. Experience gained over the years of EM surveying has shown that any one of the conductor axes may be the geophysical expression of sulphide minerals which are economic basemetal deposits. These usually warrant further investigation by ground geophysics and eventually drilling on a priority basis.

Some considerations in setting a priority are:

Very long, straight conductors of uniform conductivity are often graphitic horizons with little sulphide mineralization. However parts of these which are wider, more conductive than the rest, or faulted will have a potential sulphides emplacement.

Small, highly conductive anomalies in the order of 3 to 5 flight lines in length and lying off to the side of formational conductors. This is the model of the Sturgeon Lake, Ontario orebody and is given high priority.

Magnetic Correlation. When EM anomalies coincide directly with a magnetic anomaly, the conclusion is that the anomalies represent a magnetic conductor such as pyrrhotite or mixtures of magnetite and other sulphide minerals. Care must be taken not to be mislead by a magnetic anomaly, which while happening to coincide, is actually caused by a host rock which is itself magnetic. An iron rich gabbro containing graphite for example. The lateral dimensions of the anomalies are the test for this problem.

Overburden. Many swamps in the Precambrian shield are acidic or contain clay and are therefore electrically conductive. Conductivities of 2 - 4 mhos are common. Shape, low conductance, absence of magnetic correlation, and conformation with low topography are clues to these conductors.

6c. Secondary (Orthogonal) Survey

The western quarter or so of the area was flown with a separate set of flight lines which were aligned at right angles to the main set so as to provide good intersections with any conductor axes aligned along the short direction of the grid, such as might be associated with the granite/volcanics contact to the west. This survey found two new conductor axes described below as Zone Q and Zone R. The rest of the conductors lay semi-parallel to these flight lines and provided the broad indeterminate anomalies which are characteristic of flying parallel to the conductor. All of the other anomalous zones which have been interpreted (Zones A to P) were based on the data from the main body of survey lines.

7. DISCUSSION OF ANOMALIES

Zone A - These four semi-parallel conductors lie in and conform to the strike direction of a regional magnetic anomaly which is an iron rich zone of the mafic and felsic volcanics underlying the area. All of the conductors are strong, well defined, and A shows a coincident magnetic response. All are given first priority for follow-up.

Zone B - This formational axis is a strong conductor with a coincident magnetic anomaly in the west half. This part should be given high priority including a small anomaly immediately to the south on Line 10320. To the east depth calculations put it at 100 metres or so but its conductance stays strong at 28 Siemens and so it would appear to be plunging to the east.

Zone C - Strong, well-defined anomalies in the eastern half and extreme western end. Direct magnetic coincidence in the eastern part. Lies on and in fact may define the granite/mafic volcanic contact.

Zone D - This conforms to the strike direction of a magnetic body on the northeast corner of the survey area which is a branch of metasediments (O.G.S. 2442). It is a strong conductor with magnetic correlation along much of its length. Priority 1.

Zones Eand F - These are formational conductors within the mafic volcanics. There

are parts with strong EM response and with clear magnetic correlation, and these are singled out for first priority follow-up.

Zone G - Similar to Zones E and F but without magnetic correlation. Graphite indicated here but given at least priority 2.

Zones Hand L - Long, formational, with strong conductors and in places with magnetic

correlation. (Line 10710 to 10730 and 10850)

Zones J, Kand M - Long formational with magnetic correlation in some parts. Coincides

with and may define the volcanic/granite contact, similar to Zone C.Zone M shows a strong conductance of 29's. Follow-up should begin atZone J owing to the magnetic correlation.

Zones N - This is a strong but short conductor in the mafic volcanics, on the flank of a magnetic body and between formational conductors. It is given priority 1 for follow-up to be centered around Line 10720.

Zone P - Same comments as for Zone N. It is magnetic on Line 10891 which should be the centre of a follow-up survey.

Zone Q - This is a string of very strong anomalies on the map which displays the results of that part of the survey flown at right angles to the main survey. This is one of the few anomalies on this map which crosses the survey lines at 90 degrees. It conforms to the strike direction of the

magnetic body which appears to swing to the north in this region. The anomaly is given priority 1 for follow-up.

Zone R - This is a low amplitude conductor seen on four flight lines. The strike direction conforms to geology and the magnetic pattern and it has a coinciding magnetic response. Depth calculations put it from 140 to 190 metres below ground level and its conductance is from 19 to 31 Siemens. Although very weak in amplitude, this anomaly is characteristic of a deep conductor and so is recommended for follow-up on a priority two basis.

Zone T- This is a long formational conductor axis coinciding with a river/swamp/lake system and may largely be due to overburden. However, the line by line pattern of anomalies is characteristic of a steeply dipping conductor axis and so is given the category of a possible weak bedrock conductor.

8. CONCLUSIONS

An airborne survey combining time-domain electromagnetic (EM) data and total field magnetic data has been completed over an area near Tommyhow Lake, Ontario. Total coverage is about 1,172 line kilometres at 150 metres line spacing.

The EM data indicates the presence of some 20 electrical conductors axes displaying the electrical and magnetic characteristics of sulphide mineralization. These are graded and described and a number of them have been recommended for additional investigation by ground methods.
