Question 7Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you

feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?

One way I have learnt from my preliminary product is that the title of the magazine is an important aspect. The title in my preliminary magazine is thin and blends into the background. To overcome this I decided to use a thick bold white font against a red background. By doing this the title becomes more eye catching. Another thing I learnt was that the front cover needs to be full and busy in a tasteful minimalist way. My preliminary task is empty and there isn’t much going on, which makes the product look unfinished and basic. I learnt from this and chose to include more images and to make the featured articles bolder. Doing this made my front cover appear more professional. It also ensured that the text did not blend in with the background.

Something else I have learnt is that when taking my images I needed to direct my model and take more than one image. In my preliminary task I took one photo of my model and his hair was in front of his face. This was an issue as no connection could be made from the model to the audience. I learnt from this and decided to direct my model for the music magazine. I had my model make eye contact with the camera throughout the photo-shoot. I also took over 100 photos so that I had a choice when making my final decisions. For my preliminary task I did not schedule a photo-shoot or have a model ready. I learnt from this and pre booked the studio and a camera for the photo-shoot for my magazine. I also recruited my model before hand so I could ensure she was wearing a costume which fit in with the theme of the magazine.

Another aspect I learnt was about the importance of organisation and time management. As mentioned previously I had to improvise with a model as I hadn’t organised this beforehand. This left me unable to produce a professional looking product. This time I managed to book the studio in advance and was able to organise a model. This allowed me to create my product at a higher standard. I was also able to choose my models costume, by doing this I ensured that my model would reflect my brand and the image I wanted to portray. This would also make my magazine more appealing to my target audience.
