Evaluation Question 1In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?

Structures of magazines…I have included some examples of music magazines. As you can see the mast head is the boldest title on the page so it stands out, the other most common features are the main image.

The similarities that my magazine shares with these conventional magazines are the bright colours and using the same colour scheme throughout. I have mostly the same amount of text and also a high quality image.

After noticing the main features on conventional magazines I decided to make these features the main features on my magazine as well.

Annotated front coverMasthead –Bright and Bold masthead with a strong colour to attract attention. Price and date of publish-Informs you when magazine is published and how much it will cost.

Cover Lines - Big and bold writing which catches attention, especially with all the writing being in capitals. The word ‘RYTHMIX’ is also in capitals and is a bright yellow colour with a bold black outline.

Main story (double page spread) –One of the boldest and biggest cover lines on the page. Is a bright bold colour, which is also the same colour as the masthead. I put a yellow outline on the text to make it stand out even more.

Competition – Made the box a bold yellow colour with black text to make it stand out.

Front cover inspiration…My target audience is 11-16 year old females, therefore my magazine needed to be ‘girly’ and ‘pretty’ in order to appeal to this age group. Therefore it was important that I made right decisions about the colours, text and images.

I mainly chose different shades of pink as I think this is one of the most feminine colours.

I also made sure that for my main image I had a female model, I needed her to look girlie and want to attract people to buy the magazine. Therefore I made sure that she was wearing makeup and bright lipstick with a very light pink and white outfit. I also made sure that she was making direct eye contact with the camera, so it gives the effect that she is looking at you, which captures peoples eye contact.

Typical conventional teen magazines have inspired my magazine cover. They always have teenage and/or young people for the main images this is done so that it attracts the teenage age group that they are trying to attract.

The Bliss magazine that I looked at for inspiration was aimed at young teenage girls, although there magazine is based on celebrities, fashion , beauty and teenage problems and issues. Therefore when I was designing my magazine I had to think carefully about how to make it more into a music magazine. Like the ‘Top of the Pops’ magazine. I knew that I definitely needed to include lots of bright and eye catching colours and text and also overcrowd the page with text and have at least 3 pictures on my cover as this is commonly done in all teenage music magazines.

Contents page I have tried to keep the similar features of a conventional music magazine contents page, such as this bliss contents page. I think the bliss magazine was good to look at to influence my designs because I think the way it visually looks appeals to 11-16 year old girls.

There are 6 images on the page, with one of them being a lot larger than the rest which I will include on my magazine and use a young girl to appeal to this age group again. I have tried to keep a pink colour scheme throughout as this links in with my front cover colours.

I kept the text at the top of the page bigger as this shows what's in the magazine as I didn’t want to make the larger amount of text the biggest as I wanted the images to stand out more as this is commonly done in conventional music magazines.

Double Page Spread

The double page spreads I looked at, such as Bliss and Top Of The Pops.

To influence my ideas for my own double page spread, I made certain that I would look at a range of different teen music magazines.

I noticed that they all have at least two pictures on the double page, parts from the main story made bold, bright colours and a running colour scheme.

By keeping the same colour scheme that I used on my cover and contents page.

I tried to keep the same conventional design of other teen music magazines

Selecting certain bits of text to stand out and be bold. This gives little snippets and attracts attention.

I made sure that I used more than one picture as this is done a lot in teen magazines and it keeps the page looking eye catching and interesting
