I called my grandfather to tell him what I wanted to do and he insisted on taking me. Little did I know this was going to be one of the most memorable moments I would share with my grandfather, Les Gunderson. At the time, there was dog salmon running through the Fraser River. So my grandpa and I got in the car and went down to the dock. Although we had very light fishing gear we tried to catch these large salmon speeding up the river. Aſter a few wise tales from my grandfather time started to pass by. All we caught were a few very small fish, but I was still having lots of fun listening to my grandfather’s historical stories. at was until he caught a snag, or that’s what we thought it was. My grandpa pulled and tugged until his rod bent into a full U shape. en all of the sudden we got a glimpse of this massive sturgeon leaping from the water with my grandfather’s hook in its jaws. My grandpa’s line was running out so we hopped in a small boat and chased the monster. Aſter around thirty minutes later the great fish surfaced right beside the boat, my heart stopped as I saw its pointy spine protruding out its body. From the top it almost looked like shark. e fish went back under and the fight progressed. Another thirty minutes passed and the fish gave up, it came up to the surface of the water and I saw its true beauty. e sturgeon was around 5 feet long and well over 100 pounds, it was like looking at a prehistoric fish. We got half the fish in the net and we were just about to haul it on to the boat when it had a last burst of energy and its shear weight broke through the net and it swam away. It is meant to foster community living in Queensborough. QSPC and QRA are nonprofit societies founded to provide for the needs of Queensborough residents. Monthly QRA meetings are held the third Tuesday, QSPC meetings are held the first Thursday; both meet at the Queensborough Community Centre. A Big Fish Story by Braeden Watson Queensborough Community Centre 920 Ewen Avenue, New Westminster V3M 5C8 Phone 604-525-7388 Queensborough Residents Association The QRA was started in 2001 by residents who wanted a safe, crime-free, peaceful, attractive community. We hold regular meetings to discuss areas of concern. The Annual General Meeting will be held on May 20th. In order to vote, you must be a member for at least 60 days. Memberships are $5 for individuals and $10 for businesses. Any Queensborough resident, property owner or business is eligible to become a member, and now is a great time to join and help us steer the changes in the community. There are various committees, with QRA members representing and bringing forward concerns of our residents: Community Police; Drainage; Emergency Advisory; Membership; Newsletter; Traffic Safety; Trees and Parks. At the March meeting, the Hyack Association made a presentation and asked for support for their Ambassador program. QRA voted to give them $800 to fund their next trip to Tacoma, Puyallup, Sumner and Orting - 4 parades in one day. Those towns always send their representatives to our Hyack Parade. The QRA challenges all other residents associations to help promote New Westminster through this long running program. Next meeting is Tuesday, April 15 at 7 pm. Community Groups, Clubs and Partners ~ working together with the QSPC Community Schools, PAC’s, 50+ Social Club, Queensborough Book Club, Port Royal Community Garden, QRA, Teensborough, Artists in the Boro, as well as various subcommittees who take on specific events and projects. Step 5- Dispose of the garbage in bins located in various locations as shown on our site map or bring it to the Queensborough Community Centre by 2:00 pm on the 27th of April. Finally- Your crew is invited to attend our barbecue (by donation) and recycling information event from noon to 3:00 pm on the 27th at the Queensborough Community Centre. Live music, entertainment and other youth activities planned. Business Challenge We are also inviting businesses in Queensborough to do their part and send us a picture of your cleanup, which we will post on our facebook page; sign up and post any challenges there too. A day to sell, donate, recycle and clean up Queensborough

On fine fall day in October there was not much to do, so I thought it would be a great idea to go fishing. I called my grandfather to tell him what I wanted to do and he insisted on taking me. Creating Experiences at Queensborough Community Centre

We have two amazing staff who “MAKE IT HAPPEN” for you and your family at Queensborough Community Centre.

Nikki Lajeunesse, our Recreation Programmer, is a graduate of the University of Victoria and has been working within community recreation settings for 10 years, including extensive work with the Boys & Girls Clubs of South Coast BC as well as BC Recreation and Parks associations. Nikki is passionate about creating community connections and is devoted to supporting families in Queensborough to lead happy and healthy lives!Matt Matic, our Fitness Programmer, was born and raised close by in Burnaby. Matt became an avid skier at a young age and was lucky to call the mountains of BC his workplace for 8 years. Upon graduating from

The Human Kinetics program at the University of British Columbia, Matt developed an interest in the fitness and recreation field. He was hired by the Queensborough Community Centre in 2010 and is now the fitness programmer.
