ADIRONDACK VOICES TO BEGIN REHEARSALS The Adirondack Voicescommunity chorus will have 2 registration dates for the upcoming session: the first willtake place on Tuesday, September 8 th at 6:45 pm at Christ Church United Methodistlocated at 54 Bay Street. CHAPMAN MUSEUM’S SUMMER STODDARD MINI-EXHIBIT FEATURES“CAMP LIFE” Some of the most intriguing photos that S. R. Stoddard took are imagesof camp life in the Adirondacks in the 1870s and ‘80s. From his own excursions in themountains Stoddard was quite familiar with the rustic camping experience of that time.In his guide books he offered practical advice for new campers, including the essentialsof a complete outfit. His photos capture the full range of camping options from smalllakeside tent sites to permanent camps that featured log lean-tos and even kitchens. TheChapman Museum’s new Stoddard mini-exhibit, which will be on display through Sep-tember 13th, features fifteen images of camp life ranging from Lake George to RaquetteLake. Included are photos of the 1887 American Canoe Association campsite on LakeChamplain, The Antlers and Camp Pine Knot, and evening entertainment aroundAdirondack campfires. Also included in the exhibit is a small publication, Camp Life,Twelve Photo-Gravures from Originals by S.R. Stoddard, published in 1892. Stoddardsought to earn new revenue from his photographs, and photogravure offered him theopportunity to present his works as more than mere souvenirs; rather, they were worksof art. Wrote the book reviewer for a literary magazine, The Writer, “Mr. Stoddard isunexcelled as a photographer of natural scenery, and his pictures of woods and camp lifeare simply delightful. No one who has ever traversed the Adirondack lakes and rivers orcamped in the woods of Maine can fail to be attracted by the charm of these pictures....Camp Life will be a perpetual delight to any lover of outdoor life who may be fortunateenough to become its possessor.” The Chapman Historical Museum is located at 348Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY. MORE DELIGHTFUL MUSIC IN THE COURTROOM- DanShulman and Kaori Washiyama will present another of their popularchamber music events at the Courthouse on Sunday, September13 at 3 pm. The program will include a sonata for violin and pianoby Mozart and another by Brahms, in addition to many short worksfor their two instruments. Mozart’s Sonata in C, written when hewas just 21 years old, shows off his skill in the handling of bothinstruments. It is a brilliant and high-spirited piece, and one ofthose early works of his that set the tone for the future of music forviolin and piano. Brahms, one of the composers who, thoughsteeped in the Romantic style, most determined to continue thistradition, wrote all of his three violin and piano sonatas in summermonths, while on vacation in the country. Thus, they contain someof his most relaxed and lyrical music. A diversity of short pieces,by Elgar, Prokofiev and others, and a famous showpiece by theearly twentieth-century Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate, roundout the program. Now in its sixth season, the Courthouse ChamberMusic Series showcases musical masterpieces in the acousticallysplendid, historic courthouse, featuring distinguishedinstrumentalists and singers from around the region. The 30th annual Sandy Hill Days will be held on Friday September 11 and SaturdaySeptember 12 in Hudson Falls, New York.The Arts And Crafts will be back in the newly renovated Juckett Park (the Circle).Paris Park will have carnival rides, games, and food vendors in addition to entertainment.The Arts & Crafts venue will feature local artisans, food vendors and entertainment.The Fireworks will be held on Saturday September 12 at 10 pm near Juckett Park. LITERACY VOLUNTEERS OF RENSSELAER COUNTY AN-NOUNCES APPOINTMENT OF NEW PRESIDENT- Caitlin Stein-Miner has been elected to serve as President of the Board of Directorsof Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (LVORC). She has servedon the Board since 2011, attaining the position of Vice President in2013. She has been active in the many events that financially supportLVORC including chairing the Literacy 5K in 2012. Ms. Stein-Minerreceived a Bachelor’ Degree in Sociology and Human Services with aminor in Special Education from Russell Sage College and a Master’sDegree in Social Work from The University at Albany. She is presentlya clinician at Samaritan Hospital Outpatient Clinic. Previously, sheworked for 17 years as a case manager in different capacities forRensselaer County and more recently worked on the BHO project inNew York State. She is most proud of her role as a mom to two activeteenagers. Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County is a nonprofit edu-cational organization that recruits, trains and supports volunteers toprovide free, confidential tutoring to adults, out-of-school teens, chil-dren and families. One-to-one and small group tutors provide instruc-tion in reading, writing, math, conversational English, and financialliteracy, helping learners to achieve personal, social, educational andjob-related goals.
