CHAPMAN MUSEUM’S SUMMER STODDARD MINI-EXHIBIT FEATURES “CAMPLIFE” Some of the most intriguing photos that S. R. Stoddard took are images of camp life in theAdirondacks in the 1870s and ‘80s. From his own excursions in the mountains Stoddard was quitefamiliar with the rustic camping experience of that time. In his guide books he offered practical advicefor new campers, including the essentials of a complete outfit. His photos capture the full range ofcamping options from small lakeside tent sites to permanent camps that featured log lean-tos and evenkitchens. The Chapman Museum’s new Stoddard mini-exhibit, which will be on display through Sep-tember 13th, features fifteen images of camp life ranging from Lake George to Raquette Lake.Included are photos of the 1887 American Canoe Association campsite on Lake Champlain, The Ant-lers and Camp Pine Knot, and evening entertainment around Adirondack campfires. Also included inthe exhibit is a small publication, Camp Life, Twelve Photo-Gravures from Originals by S.R. Stoddard,published in 1892. Stoddard sought to earn new revenue from his photographs, and photogravureoffered him the opportunity to present his works as more than mere souvenirs; rather, they were worksof art. Wrote the book reviewer for a literary magazine, The Writer, “Mr. Stoddard is unexcelled as aphotographer of natural scenery, and his pictures of woods and camp life are simply delightful. No onewho has ever traversed the Adirondack lakes and rivers or camped in the woods of Maine can fail tobe attracted by the charm of these pictures.... Camp Life will be a perpetual delight to any lover ofoutdoor life who may be fortunate enough to become its possessor.” The Chapman Historical Museumis located at 348 Glen Street, Glens Falls, NY. 4-H WILDLIFE HABITAT EDUCATION PROGRAM FIELD TRIP-On Wednesday, August12 the 4-H program of Cornell Cooperative Extension of Warren County will host a field trip to theAdirondack Wild Center in Tupper Lake. The trip will leave the CCE education center at 8:30AM andreturn at 5:30PM. The cost is $11 per youth and includes travel, admission, and a live animal display.Additional money for lunch and gift shopping at the center will be the responsibility of the family. Vanspace is provided to current 4-H WHEP participants, however all 4-H members are welcome to attend.Left over seats will be allocated on a first come first serve basis. Additional families are welcome todrive themselves to the site. The Wildlife Habitat Education program is open to all youth who are inter-ested in learning more about the natural history of the local flora and fauna of Warren County and NewYork State. The program has an annual competition where teams of youth representing each statecompete in identifying and developing management plans for various environmental scenarios. 4-H is thelargest youth development organization in the United States empowering over six million young people to“learn by doing.” The program is open to any youth ages 5 to 19 years old with opportunities to learnthrough clubs, after school and school enrichment programs and through the variety of programs offeredthrough the Cooperative Extension offices. THE 5TH ANNUAL COUNTRY AND BLUEGRASS JAMBOREE will be held Wednesday,August 5th at Little Theater on the Farm 27 Plum Road, Fort Edward. Featured this year will be: TheLegendary Smokey Greene at 3:00 and 7:00; from Vermont the Seth Sawyer Band at 1:00 and 5:00;the very popular Jim Gaudet and the Railroad Boys at 2:00 and 6:00; local favorites, the Bluebillies at4:00 and 8:00; and Argyle’s favorite Dry Town Drifters will open and close our show at 12 noon and9:00 pm. When you come to the Jamboree you are showing your support for Bluegrass music andmusicians which are an important part of our culture. Admission is $12 ($10 for seniors and students).Food will be available as well as raffles and door prizes. This event is made possible, in part, withpublic funds from the New York State Council on the Arts Decentralization Program, administeredlocally by the Lower Adirondack Regional Arts Council.
