Soybeans might be more profitable than corn now, but that doesn't mean they will be at harvesttime. Here, a look at soybean-to-corn price rat ios, says Gary Schnitkey, University of Illinois. Both corn and soybean prices have fallen since last summer, with corn falling more than soybeans.Because corn prices have fallen more the soybean prices, the soybean-to-corn price ratio hasincreased, signaling that soybeans have become relatively more profitable than corn. This leads tospeculation that corn acres will decrease in 2014, while soybean acres will increase. Acreage shiftsmay occur. However, high soybean-to-corn prices in the spring do not necessarily signal high soybean-to-corn price ratios at harvest. Therefore,

relative returns between corn and soybeansmay change.Spring Soybean-to-Corn Price Ratios. The soybean-to-corn price ratio equals thesoybean price divided by the corn price.Higher soybean-to-corn price ratios meanthat soybean prices are higher relative tocorn prices, which lead to soybeans beingrelatively more profitable corn. Obviously, lower soybean-to-corn price ratios indicatehigher corn returns relative to soybeanreturns.Herein, soybean-to-corn price ratios were calculated using projected prices, which are used to setcrop insurance guarantees. Projected prices are average of settlement prices of Chicago MercantileExchange (CME) contract during the month of February. The December contract is used for cornand the November contract for soybeans. Use of these projected prices provides a good indicationof relative prices in the spring prior to planting. The 2014 projected prices are $4.62 for corn and $11.36 for soybeans, leading to a soybean-to-cornprice ratio of 2.46 (11.36/4.62). It is useful to compare the 2.46 ratio to historical ratios to gain a feelwhether the 2014 ratio is high or low. Two distinct periods exist between 1972 through 2013 (seeFigure 1). Between 1972 through 1998, the soybean-to-corn price ratio averaged 2.40. The 2.46

price ratio for 2014 is above the 1972-1998 average, but would not have been one of the highestratios during the 1972 -1998 period (see Figure 1). During this period, U.S. soybean acres increasedmore than corn acres. U.S. corn acres were 67 mil lion acres in 1972 and 80 million in 1998. From1972 to 1998, corn acres increased 19%. During the same time period soybeans acres increase53% from 47 million acres in 1972 to 72 million acres in 1998.Something to keep an eye on.

John (JC) Carmody, owner of CarmodyFord, is excited about the new venture and told us that he"wanted to bring some excitement to Greenwich and tothe traffic circle". "There are several new unique busi-nesses in Greenwich", said John...."We wanted to be apart of adding some spark to the community and to thetraffic circle." Boneyard BBQ is now open Thursday - Sat-urday and offers a variety of mouth watering BBQ, salads, and more. "There is new space in our renovated buildingto place the new BBQtrailer during the win-ter", says Carmody,"So we anticipate beingopen year round.People can come in to the building and enjoy the outdoorexperience even when the weather isn't as nice." GEORGE VAN HOOKS EARLYPAINTINGS: Joys in the Attic

Amid the boxes and family memorabilia at the top of thenarrow back stairs of his Cambridge NY home, gallery ownerSue Clary was delighted to discover a treasure trove in theattic of her friend, highly respected art ist George Van Hook. Now known mostly for his plein air oil paintings that cel-ebrate nature, Van Hooks early works reveal places andsubjects and techniques that preceded his present immer-sion in the rural landscape. The Attic Collection is now ondisplay at McCartees Barn Fine Arts Gallery in Salem, whereSue and Bill Clary hosted an artists reception on May 23rd.

Born in Bucks County, Pennsylvania, Van Hook spentmany summers in mid-coastal Maine, where he gained anearly appreciation for both art and landscape. His desire topaint led him to Paris; during the early morning hours, hewas often able to enter the Louvre to copy the masters andbe inspired by the classics. He and his wife would later moveto California, and the paintings capturing local Californiascenes include one found in the attican early award-win-ner. One of his 1979 paintings, titled Old Town, marked theunintended broadening of his horizons. Van Hook and hispeers were waiting for a figure model who failed to showup, so they decided to just go out and paint. It was windy,he recounted, So I ducked into an alley. The result is anarresting painting that captures the light of coastal Califor-nia and where a truck is the focal point. The Attic Collection includes still lifes that depict the intri-cacy of silken fabric, the coloring of pears, the sheen oflight reflected on a pitcher. Its impossible to think that thesestunning paintings were stashed up in an attic! marvelsSue Clary as she contemplates the artists evolution andthe beauty of the work. I am so pleased that we are bring-

ing them into the light of day once again!McCartees Barn Fine Art andAntiques: 23 East Broadway, Salem, NY

The story of NV: AUnique Boutiqueand Consignment

    Does Cambridge needanother consignment shop?

This is the question VickyNewman-Jones asked her

daughter Nikki Reynolds when approached (yet again) withthe idea of opening a boutique together. If you ask the motherdaughter duo responsible for NV, the newest retail shop intown, the answer to this quest ion is ABSOLUTELY. Afterall, its been a lifelong dream of theirs to own a consignmentboutique.

The woman of NV have learned that having a dream andmaking it real is hard work but incredibly rewarding. Fromspending hours online finding used retail fixtures to paintinguntil their arms ached, the two were determined to createan ideal shopping experience for customers. Coming upwith a name for their boutique proved to be a difficult task.In the end, they chose simply NV; taking the first initials ofeach woman.

The women chose to pursue their business adventureright in the village of Cambridge at 76 West Main Street.Since Cambridge has been home to these women for somany years it was natural to start their dream there.

Now, Cambridge has its share of unique places to shopbut what makes NV different from the rest is that its both aboutique and a consignment shop in one. NV was createdwith the idea to sell both new and like new merchandisethat typically a person would have to travel out of the areafor. The boutique has much to offer: womens, mens, childrens, shoes, jewelry, crafts and more! They even havea play area for little ones.

With the help of family, friends, and lots of paint, the longawaited NV opened its doors October 1 st. To the delight ofNikki and Vicky, the shop is thriving with prospectiveconsignors. Thrifty consumers are encouraged to s top infrequently since NV receives new merchandise daily.

NV welcomes new cosignors and currently acceptsspring and summer items. Are you creative? The boutiquewants to sell your unique crafts, homemade jewelry, andgifts as well.Stop in for a visit...you are sure to walk outwith a bag full of NV!

Dear Uncle Wally, A LETTER FROM A READER:My husband and I have often enjoyed your wit and offering ofinteresting information, our favorite being the column on thePresidents car, the Beast. However, this recent column about oil, while extremelythought-provoking and informative, overlooks completely the pinkelephant in the room! - i.e. the effect of continuing to burn oiland process and refine oil, on the Ear ths atmosphere, which isdetrimental to all life forms on the planet- moreso as time goes

on. You may not agree- perhaps youre one of thos who scoff atthe idea that the planet is going under due to mans dirty hab-its/addictions (like oil). Or perhaps you just overlooked it!Youre such an entertaining writer- how about (even if just forthe practice exercise of it) writing in favor of finding alternativeenergy sources?Quote: If aliens did visit us, Id be embarassed to tell them westill dig fossil fuels from the ground as a source of energy.-Neil deGrasse Tyson Thank you- Sincerely, Deb DeichlerThanks for the comment, Deb.I agree, we need to curb our polluting ways. However, I am notconvinced that man is the major culprit in the polluting of ourplanet. For instance, 36 active volcanoes*, sun spots, and otherfactors over which man has no control are immense contribut-ing factors. Then there are the so-called do-gooder politicians who de-cided to solve the problem by letting people pay to pollute. The only thing that is doing is putting more money into theirpockets and more power in their hands. Since it has become a

political issue, it is not likely a reasonable resolution will bereached. Result: we all suffer. By utilizing the sources of energythat God has given us, at least we can enjoy life on Earth, evenas it wanes. So, drill and enjoy a good economy!

*Re: How much pollution does a volcano produce?Beside particulate (ash and other particles), volcanoes can re-lease enormous quantities of gases, including the following pol-lutants:H2O water vaporCO2 carbon dioxideSO2 sulfur dioxideH2S hydrogen sulfideCO carbon monoxideHCl hydrogen chlorideHF hydrogen flourideEven non-explosive basaltic volcanoes (Hawaii, Iceland) canrelease damaging quantities of pollutants in the form of "vog",or volcanic smog. The Hawaii volcano observatory has recentlyissued warnings for sulfur dioxide emissions and restricted ac-cess to areas around Kilauea. The 1783 Icelandic basalt erup-

tion resulted in emission of over 100 tons of SO2 in less than 8months- killing humans, livestock and damaging crops in bothIceland and Europe. Gas emissions during the eruption of theSiberian traps may have caused the great Permian extinction250 million years ago. Volcanic SO2 emissions can range up to10 million tons per day.
