Blakemore Farmgrazes a herd of Belted Gallo-

ways following Managed Intensive Grazing (MIG),know as rotational grazing. Cattle are grass-fed startto finish, no grain or added hormones. Belted Gal-

loways are a heritage breed, normally lean due totheir extra insulating hair. Their farm is AnimalWelfare Approved (AWA). Primary sales are sides

of beef, but individual cuts may be available.

    Blakemore Farm is

open year round byappointment. Givethem a call and try

    some local grassfed

    beef.

Andy and Terry told us: We support this business be-

cause of the quality of their Beef. There are many

fine local beef producers that we support but we put

Blakemore Farm on top of the list. They show a lot of

care in the raising of their cows and it is reflected in

the great taste of their meat.

ON THE FARM by Andy MannePlan for a Winning SeasonThe prospect of tight margins for many grain producers has created considerable anxiety. Muchlike a sports team with several years of winning success under its belt, producers have had a similarlevel of success. But we know all too well that maintaining a winning season every single year isvirtually impossible. In the cycle of success, a coach and team occasionally have to face a newseason with an entirely different set of challenges. Maybe they lost a few key players or thecompetition level increased due to a conference or division change. One or two variables coulddouble the difficulty of competition wi thin a year.Rebuild Goals. As steadily increasing input costs and a 50% reduction in price opportunity havechanged the playing field, farmers need to think of 2014 as a rebuilding year. While the conditionshave changed, the rules are the same. For some, jus t staying in the game might be a win, but whynot plan for success and set realistic goals to win a few games during the season? Its a necessityif you dont want to gamble.

Sports teams look for creative plays tosurprise their opponents. They methodicallywork to improve their weaknesses, but theirprimary focus is on taking advantage of theirstrengths. Think of your farm-what canyou do creatively or more intensively toenhance profitability and growth? Considerhybrid positioning, seed placement, equipment adjustments, crop scouting, nitrogen management and working to betterunderstand the markets.By the same token, while youre managingcosts, dont unintentionally rob yieldits the one variable that can impact profit opportunity themost. Remember, a sports team with a killer defense can accomplish a great deal, but without theability to score, its impossible to win.Throughout the season, a sports team plays one game at a timetweaking, fine-tuning or changingstrategies all together based on their opponent and current circumstances. Getting started on thewrong foot or losing the first game or two doesnt mean the season as a whole will be a failure.Evaluating the situation and making the necessary changes at any point during the season couldturn things around for a positive outcome.Think about breaking your farming season into several components. Start with a complete

understanding of your financial condition. Net worth, working capital and cash flow will help youknow the strength of your team. However, the most important part of your teams strength is yourpeople. Do you have the right people in the right place at the right time with the right set of skills? If youre 100% confident in all of these things, your team is ready to play. If not, get yourself andyour team focused on the challenges ahead.Create Your Win.Walk through a variety of scenarios and see wha t the numbers look like underdifferent conditions. Discuss all of the individual responsibilities for the season so that everyoneclearly understands their role. Review the plans often and look for weak links in the chain. Focus onfixing the weak points and strengthening the strong points. Teams that exemplify the greatest disciplinewill eventually overcome the greatest challenges. Your farming operation can do the same. Tomaximize their effectiveness during the season, sports teams analyze tons of statistics.
