Just ThinkingBy: May Jones I awoke with a startle the other night; the clashing of the winter andspring air along with a brief, but brilliant flash of light following therumble that shook the house. Hello there spring! Along with the sweetconk-la-ree call of the red winged blackbird - thunderstorms are theharbingers of spring. On the shortest of walks one can notice thechanges – why, in just two consecutive breaths there exists a differencein temperature: one a bit chilly, and the next with the slightest hint ofsouthern warmth. Confused by spring’s early arrival, the flow from the maple treesstopped short this year. They’ve decided to make leaves instead ofsap. Green grass is growing in the ditch water, and lilac tree buds areforming on limbs that are still clinging to last year’s dried up blooms. The angry waves of the river, behaving more like an ocean, hasalready passed. It wasn’t much of a fury this year, only flirting a fewtimes with the highest banks, and then subsiding quickly. I can alwaystell how high the river has risen by the Buddha statue that someonehas placed on its banks. Sometimes, he’s up to his neck in water, andother times I fret that he’s been carried away by the force of thecurrents, but lo…he always reappears. The woods have their own expression of spring. Alongside a fallentree from last year, a seedling is emerging from the fertile ground ofautumn’s decaying leaves. The tree is gone, but the seed is not. Thatsame tree, busy in its afterlife, also serves as the perfect habitat fornew families of chipmunks and rabbits. Just yesterday I heard the first few peeps from a peeper in the nearbypond – just one - with long pauses in between, and then a few dayslater, all were singing in perfect harmony. Their music lulls me to sleepfor many weeks until it is replaced by the gulping and croaking offrogs.Take a long...slow...deep…breath. It’s spring! Your comments are welcome at [email protected]

I wonder, did you folks know: President Barack Obama hasrequested a raise in the amount of money allotted to formerpresidents of 18 percent, according to a report by Congres-sional Research Service.”The President’s FY2017 budget re-quest seeks $3,865,000 in appropriations for expenditures forformer Presidents, an increase of $588,000 (17.9%) from theFY2016 appropriation level,” the report says. Obama leavesoffice in January 2017, and the increase in requested funds forFY2017 “anticipates President Barack Obama’s transition fromincumbent to former President,” the report says. For FY2016,Obama requested and received appropriations of $3,277,000for expenditures for former Presidents, which is an increase of$25,000 from FY2015. Former presidents began receiving payafter leaving office in after passage of the Former PresidentsAct in 1958. The law was passed in response to former Presi-dent Harry Truman having financial difficulties in his post-presidency. ”Some critics of the Former Presidents Act say thestatute subsidizes Presidents who are not struggling financially,”the report reads. “Others argue that although a former Presi-dent is not in a formal public position, he remains a publicfigure and should be provided a pension and benefits that per-mit him to perform duties that emerge as a result of his publicstatus.” The intent of the law is to provide for a dignified lifefor presidents after leaving office. Though many are financiallysecure, Truman and Ulysses S. Grant both struggled. The annual pay is equal to that of the head of an executivedepartment, which was $203,700 in 2015. It was raised to$205,700 in 2016. Widows of former presidents receive $20,000per year.It is reported that Trump would waive the yearly stipend.

Reflections: What It All Boils Down ToWritten by Rachel Essaff Maher

Recently, I helped chaperone the Village School of NorthBennington’s (VSNB) second-grade field trip to the Touch of PeaceFarm in Bennington, Vermont. My son, Ryan, and his classmateswere there to learn about the maple sugaring process by touring the

farm’s sugar house and watching the process in action. Now, I’ve lived in the area allmy life, so I thought I knew all there was to know about where real Vermont maplesyrup comes from. As it turns out, not only was I wrong, but the kids were actually afew steps ahead of me on this one.

One of the great things about VSNB is that the school pushes a real hands-on approachto learning. When kids learn by doing, not only do they have a lot of fun, but they alsoretain the information they learn much better than they would have by just readingabout the subject in textbooks alone. Certainly, they read about maple sugaring inclass, but they also: tapped maple trees around the school property (with help fromtheir teacher John Ulrich, VSNB Board member Pete Niles, and Peace Varga); helpedto monitor and then empty the thirty sap buckets (which were supplied by a generousdonation from the Fund for North Bennington); and then went on this great field trip tosee how their sap would be boiled into syrup and bottled in a sugar house.

Owned by Peace and Jenn Varga, Touch of Peace Farm hosts students from VSNBevery spring. By the time we got to the Chapel Road sugar house, the students werebubbling with excitement. The class was divided into two groups, one of which wouldtour the property to view sap lines while the other entered the sugar house to observethe boiling process. Ryan’s group toured the property first. Guided by Jenn Varga, thestudents were eager to answer all of her questions as she showed them how some saplines used gravity and other lines used vacuum to carry the sap from the maple trees tothe collection units outside the sugar house.

Inside the sugar house, the air was thick with the sticky-sweet steam of boiling sap.Every breath was warm and delicious. Peace Varga showed the students how woodwas added to the fire to boil the sap to 219.7 degrees Fahrenheit. Behind the scenes,we saw how a reverse osmosis unit helped to draw the water out of the sap before iteven entered the boiling pans, a feat which Varga says has helped cut down on theboiling time and thus reduced the amount of wood needed to fire the stove. Next, thestudents were able to help Varga to dispense freshly made, piping hot (as in180degrees Fahrenheit!) maple syrup into their own glass bottles, which will then bebrought back the school, where the children will create labels for them before takingthem home to enjoy with their families.

As we were leaving, Ryan grinned and chatted animatedly with his friends. I remindedthem, “It takes forty gallons of sap to make one gallon of syrup!” “That’s a lot ofwork,” he replied. Yes. Yes, it is. And it all boils down to so much more than I everknew I could know about sugaring. Luckily, you can go see the sugar house in actiontoo. On April 2nd and 3rd, as part of the Vermont Maple Open House weekend, Touchof Peace Farm’s sugar house will be open to the public for demonstrations and tasting

from 10:00 am until 2:00 pm on both days. Happy sugaring!
