Financial Reviewsby Breanna Fulper

Time to Check the Progress toward your Financial Goals

Now that another year is ending, i t’s a good time to take stock of where

you are on your journey toward financial security and set financialresolutions for a New Year. Of course, you could find many different

“measuring sticks” to assess your progress, but you can certainly gainconsiderable information just by asking yourself some basic questions.

Here are a few questions to consider:· How close am I to each of myfinancial goals? Your comprehensive

financial plan should include a reasonably good estimate of how muchmoney you will eventually need for the respective goal. For example, sustaining the retirement lifestyle

you’ve envisioned. At least once a year, you should evaluate how much closer you’ve gotten to yourgoals than the year before.

·Am I making sufficient progress toward my goals? When assessing your progress, try to determineif your portfolio is properly allocated between stocks, stock-based vehicles, bonds, government secu-

rities, certificates of deposit and other investments. If you’re “overweighted” in a particular assetclass, such as cash, you may be impeding your ability to move toward your goals.

·Am I adhering to my investment strategy? To stick with your investment strategy, you need to investat regular intervals and meet regularly with your financial professional to review your progress and

make adjustments — such as rebalancing your portfolio — when necessary. Of course, even withregular progress reviews and portfolio rebalancing, it can be challenging, psychologically and emo-

tionally, to stick with a strategy.·What aspects of my life have changed in the past year? Your plan should be based entirely on your

individual needs and circumstances — so if these have changed during the past year, you may alsohave to adjust the way you invest. Consider any and all changes in your life — marriage, new

children, divorce, remarriage, new job, new home, etc. — and then try to determine what impactthese changes might have on your long-term financial strategy and if you need to adjust that strategy

in response.About 45% of Americans usually make New Year’s resolutions, but only 8% of us actually keep our

resolutions. When we make financial resolutions, they could significantly help us in pursuit of ourimportant long-term goals if achieved — it’s clearly worthwhile to make every effort to follow through.

So, what sorts of financial resolutions might you consider? Here are a few possibilities:

·Boost your contributions to your retirement plans. Each year, try to put in a little more to your IRAand your 401(k) or other employer-sponsored retirement plans. These tax-advantaged accounts are

good options for your retirement savings strategy.·Reduce your debts. It’s not always easy to reduce your debts, but make it a goal to finish 2014 with

a smaller debt load than you had going into the New Year. The lower your monthly debt payments, themore money you’ll have to invest for retirement, college for your children (or grandchildren) and

other important objectives.·Build your emergency fund. Work on building an “emergency fund” containing six to 12 months’

worth of living expenses, with the money held in a liquid account that offers a high degree of preser-vation of principal. Without such a fund, you might be forced to dip into your long-term investments to

pay for emergencies, such as a new furnace, a major car repair, and so on.·Plan for your protection needs. If you don’t already have the proper amounts of life and disability

insurance in place, put it on your “To Do” list for 2014. Also, if you haven’t taken steps to protectyourself from the considerable costs of long-term care, such as an extended nursing home stay,

consult with your financial professional, who can suggest the appropriate protection or investmentvehicles. You may never need such care, but that’s a chance you may not want to take — and the

longer you wait, the more expensive your protection options may become.·Don’t overreact to market volatility. Too many people head to the investment “sidelines” during

market downturns. But if you’re not invested, then you miss any potential market gains— and thebiggest gains are often realized at the early stages of the rally.

·Focus on the long term. You can probably check your investment balance online, which means youcan do it every day, or even several times a day — but should you? If you’re following a strategy

that’s appropriate for your needs, goals, risk tolerance and time horizon, you’re already doing whatyou should be doing in the long run. So there’s no need to stress yourself over the short-term move-

ments that show up in your investment statements.By asking, and answering, the questions above at the end of each year, you should always have a

good sense of where you are in pursuit of your long-term goals — and what you need to do to bring

the realization of those goals closer to reality. In the New Year, do whatever you can to turn thesefinancial resolutions into realities. Your efforts could pay off well beyond 2014!Consider me your local financial resource; a true farm girl at heart who understands family and

business dynamics and the important financial decisions that need to be made. Call me anytime at(315) 406-0731 or e-mail me at [email protected]

 Blinky’s RandomThoughts

In Memory of Nelson Mandela:Invictus:Out of the night that covers me,Black as the pit from pole to pole,I thank whatever gods may be

For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance I have not winced nor cried aloud.Under the bludgeonings of chance My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears Looms but the horror of the shade,And yet the menace of the years Finds and shall find me unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,

How charged with punishments the scroll,I am the master of my fate: I am the captain of my soul.

COURTHOUSE RECEIVES GRANT- The Historic Sa-

lem Courthouse received an early Christmas present on

December 11 when it received word that it had been awarded

a $200,000.00 grant from the Environmental Protection

Fund Grant Program through the New York State Officeof Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation. A lengthy

and involved New York State Consolidated Funding Appli-

cation was submitted in early August, and the Courthouse

anxiously awaited word on the awards. This specific grant

requires a full match, and the Courthouse is pleased to

announce that a generous donor has already stepped for-

ward to provide the necessary match. A grant from the

same program awarded to the Courthouse in 2006, was

used to restore the front porch and construct an ADA ap-

proved handicap entrance on the southern side of the build-

ing. The current award will be used for ongoing restora-

tion of key architectural features. These critical improve-

ments will restore the Courthouse to its original beauty as

it continues to serve Washington County, NYand Benning-

ton County, VT as a vital community center offering en-

richment opportunities to people of all ages.

EASTON NEIGHBORS TO OBSERVE HIATUS- The

Easton Neighbors will not be meeting for the months of

AWARD GIVEN- Sheriff Jack Mahar is proud to receive the

Certificate of Appreciation from New York State Marine Corps

Commandant Timothy M. Forbes for outstanding support of

the United States Marine Corps Reserve Toys for Tots. The

Rensselaer Public Safety Building was one of the official drop-

off locations for Toys for Tots 2013. Chief Bly donated his 2014

raise of $430.00 and the officers union matched that $430.00(to-tal $860.00). Sergeant Sauer took the money and through the

use of coupons, manufacturer and store rebates purchased

$1,600.00 worth of toys. Toys for Tots is one of the most rec-

ognizable charitable organizations in New York. It is run by the

U.S. Marine Corps Reserves, and is supported by thousands of

civilian volunteers. “This organization allows people in the com-

munity to give back to those less fortunate,” said Mahar “Toys

for Tots focuses on the importance of “giving” especially to

those less fortunate at this time of year.” Sheriff Mahar is also

a member of the Troy Detachment Marine Corps League. Toys

for Tots started in 1947 by a Marine Reservist and his wife forneedy children at Christmastime. Since then, more than half a

billion toys have been distributed to millions of children.

ON THE FARM by Andy Manne

Two Powerful Questions You Should Answer: Legacy by Design."For the youth, do you want to be your dad's 50-year-old hired man? For the parents, do you wantyour children to work with you—or for you?" This might not be the first time you've read thesequestions, but they cut to the heart of why a lack of planning can be so destructive for the family.Lucas Lentsch, the secretary of agriculture for South Dakota, posed these questions in an articletitled "Make Succession Planning a Priority."He goes on to plead, "If succession planning has been on the 'to-do list' for some time—make it apriority. Don't wait any longer." To add a bit of urgency, now is the best time to plan. For most, theharvest is done and planting is in the distant future. Families are together, so visiting about thisimportant topic will be of interest. Thanks to Farm Journal and Pioneer, you have plenty of goodinformation, relevant tools and other resources to engage in the process.• If you don't know where to start, begin with a family meeting.• If you don't know what to do next, define some common goals.• If you don't know who can help, interview professional providers who specialize in successionplanning.• If you don't know if the plan youcompleted prior is good enough, ask for a second opinion.

• If you don't know if a plan isnecessary, ask your neighbor whois preparing the next generation, because your family will be com-peting with his in the future.
