THE PAINTINGS OF D. STEVENS BURGESS AT THE CCCA new exhibit featuring the artwork of Salem artist, D. StevensBurgess, will be on display during October and November in thefirst floor Benn Room of the Salem Courthouse Community Cen-ter. Stevens was born in New Delhi, India and studied art inBangkok, Thailand and New York. His exhibit contains impres-sionistic work focusing on land, water and the natural world. Hisstudies are creations of his own imagination, and he no longeruses points of reference in any of his pieces. His tones are subtle,and his paintings draw the viewer into the landscape in a mostrelaxing manner. Stevens has exhibited his work in several area

galleries with this being his fourth exhibit at the CCC. The Bennroom is handicap accessible and open to the public.

FIVE RED FLAGS THAT SPOOK YOUR LENDER

Curt Covington, senior vice president ofagricultural finance at Farmer Mac says thefollowing red flags wont guarantee a farmingoperation will fail, but they will cause lendersto worry it is headed in the wrong direction.1. Farmers who were spendthrifts during goodtimes. When corn was above $7 per bu., a lotof farmers made a lot of money. Thats goodnews if the money was spent wisely,Covington says. The good news is, a lot offarmers have built up some working capital and

liquidity the past few years, he says. This isthe best test what did a farmer do during the good times? Leverage kills its not just aboutprofitability, its what you did with those profits.2. Farmers who still have variable-rate debt. Although the Federal Reserve elected to keep interestrates unchanged in a Sept. 17 announcement, that move stunned many in the market, who nowexpect interest rates to inch higher starting Q1 of 2016.Will farmers be able to absorb those higher interest rates on variable-rate debt? Probably butnot without putting a pinch on other areas of the business, Covington says.If you have variable-rate debt, its time to start fixing those debts, he says. It couldnt be abetter time, in my opinion.3. Farmers who struggle with control ling costs. A lot of farmers have already gone to landlords tonegotiate rent reductions, Covington says. But while thats a good move, it shouldnt be the firstmove, he adds. He suggests farmers should review the top 20% of their vendors on an annualbasis. Are you challenging those vendors for the best deals? he asks. Make sure youve reallygot it down to the lowest price and the best quality match. You have to challenge yourself on theexpense portion of your income statement. Expense control is A No. 1.4. Farmers who rely more heavily on inventory than cash. Not all assets are created equally,Covington says. For example, stored grain certainly has value, but cash is faster and easier towork with. And for stored grain, farmers may be overestimat ing the value of whats in the bin, hesays, especially when commodity volatility can quickly shift corn prices.5. Farmers who dont communicate. Constant communication is a best practice Covington

stands by, whether that be communication with vendors, lenders or even others within the farmingoperation. Use your vendors, your banker, even your CPA and attorney, he says. Theyreservicing hundreds of other farmers in many cases. Ask them about the best practices theyreseeing with other clients. Keep communication lines strong among all key farm stakeholders,Covington adds. Like any other problem, a farm conflict is best dealt with sooner rather than laterafter it has festered or worsened, he says.

HARRY ORLYKS WORK WILL BE EXHIBITED ATMCCARTEES BARN in Salem, New York from throughOctober 31st.The exhibition of fifty paintings, curated by EveraSue Clary, provides an in-depth look at the artists work from1985-2015, which embodies the pure essence of landscape paint -ing, Orlyks paintings are rooted in the seasonal landscapes ofWashington County. They have echoes of the Hudson RiverSchool, but filtered through the use of color and composition ofthe Abstract Expressionists. They are strikingly beautiful. Thewinter paintings are composed of a pallet of umber, browns andeggshell whites that capture the barren beauty of the land. Mar-malade oranges and cobalt blues evoke the vividness of a hotsummer afternoon. Orlyks work is ambitious. Because he pro-duces a painting a day his work transcends predictable landscapepainting. He calls it a portrait of days: an evolving visual jour-nal of sunlight, land and his own emotional response to a senseof place. The land is a friend of mine. I enjoy sitting down andlistening to it.His painting process is unconventional. Every afternoon he getsin his van, carefully chooses his location, clamps his canvas tothe steering wheel, and paints. He always asks permission of the

people who own the land. As a result he forges a connectionwith them.Orlyk was born in 1947 in Troy, New York. He attended gradu-ate school at University of Nebraska at Lincoln, where he wastaught by a number of influential Nebraskan painters. For overforty years he has consistently shown his work across the coun-try, including the Carrie Haddad Gallery in Hudson, New Yorkand the Beamesderfer Gallery in Highland Park, New Jersey, aswell as internationally.
