Fig. 1: Te stent (1) and surrounding tissue (2) is removed rom the artery, and the tissue is impregnated with wax. A portion the stent is exposed (3) and attached by a metal clip (4) to the positive terminal (5) o a voltage source (6). A second portion the stent is exposed (7), and immersed in a low pH and highly osmotic solution (8), which can be continually renewed by alastic hose (9). Te solution is in contact with a metallic surace (10), which is connected to the negative terminal (11) o theoltage source. Te stent becomes the anode, donating positive ions, which will plate onto the grounded anode. In this way, thexposed portion o the stent (6) can be dissolved. Te surrounding tissue is protected by the wax, which is both chemically inerto the acid, and electrically inert to the electric current.
Fig. 2: Low power microscopy (100X) o three diwires (blue arrows) in the kidney tissue. Metal oxidethe locations where two o the wires were dissolved.stain.
Fig 3: High power microscopy (400X) o one o the disswires in the kidney tissue. Te cells adjacent to the disswire remain undamaged by the dissolving process. stain.
