She can be contacted on 03 9715 1081. A VA National Office extracted a correction and an apology from ABC Radio Na t i o n- a l’s “Law Re p o rt” last month. This followed the broadcast of an item in which the issue of pro bono (free) work undertaken by some professions to assist the communi- ty was discussed. The program concentrated on free services provided by lawyers. It conclud- ed with a list of professions we re we re said to NOT to perform pro bono work - vets we re a p a rt of that list. The Communications Manager spoke directly to staff at the program. He advised them of their grievous error and explained the AVA’s 14 Fe b ru a ry national media release, which outlined the $17 million in pro bono work undertaken by our members last year in caring for injured wildlife and “lost” animals. A copy of the release was then sent to the program with a request that a correction be forthcoming. The program staff attempted to defend their mistake by saying they we re “u n a w a re” of the situation of vets when pre p a r i n g the program. They had no response when told that it did them no credit to be bro a d c a s t i n g as “f a c t”, information that was wrong and about which they now claimed to have no specif- ic knowledge. Subsequently the producer and the presenter of the “Law Re p o rt” contacted AVA National Office separately, each seeking information to assist them in framing their apol- ogy and correction. The producer requested the text of the oath undertaken by graduating vets, pledging to care for animals and to serve the community. The presenter said she had re c e i ved “a few complaints from vets - and a couple from doctors”. She said: “I was genuine- ly impressed to learn how much free community work vets do, such as caring for injure d wildlife. You have won a fan for life!” Doctors did not fare so well. She said those who had contacted the program had expected to re c e i ve royal treatment on the basis that: “we tre a t public patients at reduced rates - compared to private patients”. It seems the medicos did not win a fan at all, let alone one for life.
