Rev. Martin T. Marren, Pastor Rev. Kevin Mullins, O.S.A., Weekend Associate Robert Landuyt, Permanent Deacon
QUEEN OF MARTYRS CHURCH Evergreen Park, Illinois
Fr. Marty’s Musings Pentecost gave birth to the Church and we celebrate it as we are looking forward to a rebirth of the Church. We hear about the disciples gathered in a room, filled with the Holy Spirit, and inspired to go out to the people and proclaim the Good News in a way that all would understand. Too bad this was not the weekend that we could have all gathered again in our church. Pentecost marks the fiftieth day of the Easter season. With the gifts of the Holy Spirit, Christ’s followers became the Body of Christ—the Church. The Spirit descended on Mary and the disciples and called the world to unity. The disciples proclaimed the Good News to people divided by language and customs, yet the Spirit brought understand-ing and harmony. Let us confirm Spirit-blessed moments. Let us celebrate the gifts of the Holy Spirit: Wisdom, Understanding, Right Judgment, Courage, Knowledge, Reverence, Wonder and Awe. We join the disciples of the Lord in receiving the inspira-tion and strength of the Holy Spirit that pushed forward the Church. The strength of the Spirit that encouraged the disciples, once frozen by fear, to share the gospel message of an ever-loving Christ. The divisions that constrain us are overcome with the Spirit’s harmony. The Spirit at that first Pentecost allowed people to understand the disciples’ message. The Holy Spirit compels us to spread the Good News today and work towards harmony and unity. That is the mission that we are given at the end of Mass as a Spirit-guided people.
As we recall our beginnings as the Church, I encourage you to commit to Queen of Martyrs so that we can renew our church as we prepare to gather again, hopefully soon. We will need many volunteers to assist as greeter, in cleaning and set-up. May the Spirit give us the courage to witness our faith in our daily lives, and the wisdom and judgment to guide us each day .
The Archdiocese has set a phased reopening:
Phase I allows for parishes to reopen for Baptism, Reconciliation, Weddings and Funerals with a limit of 10 attendees.
Phase IA allows for parishes to reopen for private prayer and adoration in church, limited to 10.
Phase II allows for reopening for weekday and week-end Masses for larger groups depending on the guide-lines from the state and the capacity of the church building.
We need your help to progress through the phases. Please call the Rectory at (708) 423-8110, e-mail me at [email protected] or check our website, www.queenofmartyrschurch.com. You can find out more at:

Congratulations to the Queen of Martyrs Class of 2020 and all our graduating parishioners!
Fr. Marty Marren
Veni, Sancte Spritus Holy Spirit, Lord of light, From Thy clear celestial height Thy pure beaming radiance give. Come, Thou Father of the poor, Come with treasures which endure, Come, Thou Light of all that live.
Thou, of all consolers best, Thou, the soul’s delightsome Guest, Dost refreshing peace bestow. Thou in toil art comfort sweet, Pleasant coolness in the heat, Solace in the midst of woe.
Light immortal, Light divine, Visit Thou these hearts of Thine, And our inmost being fill. If Thou take Thy grace away, Nothing pure in man will stay; All his good is turned to ill.
Heal our wounds; our strength renew; On our dryness pour Thy dew; Wash the stains of guilt away. Bend the stubborn heart and will; Melt the frozen, warm the chill; Guide the steps that go astray.
Thou, on those who evermore Thee confess and Thee adore, In Thy sevenfold gifts descend: Give them comfort when they die, Give them life with Thee on high; Give them joys that never end.

“If you are healthy and rich, alleviate the need of the one who is sick and poor; if you have not fallen, help the one who has fallen and lives in suffering; if you are happy, console the one who is sad; if you are fortunate, help the one who has been bitten by misfortune.” (St. Gregory of Nazianzus) Today we celebrate the Pentecost when Jesus bestows the Holy Spirit upon his apostles. The Holy Spirit bestows gifts of service on us to build up the community – both religious and geographic. How are you using your spiritual gifts for the benefit of others?
Dear Friends,
Catholic Charities food pantries are seeing record demand because of the economic impact of the COVID-19 crisis. Our food pantry at St. Blasé in Summit is serving higher numbers of families than usual, many of them first-time clients who have suddenly found themselves out of work.
At the same time, we are finding it harder and harder to acquire some common food items. As a result, we cannot provide families with as much food as they really need.
We need your help to ensure that our pantry shelves stay stocked with the items most in need: canned vegetables, peanut butter, rice, canned soup, jelly, macaroni &cheese, dry cereal, pasta, tuna, oatmeal, pasta sauce, canned fruit and fruit juice. Here’s what you can do….
Make a Monetary Donation or Fundraise for Catholic Charities: Donate or Fundraise online at https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/CovidResponseSouthRegion or mail a check payable to Catholic Charities to 12731 S. Wood Street, Blue Island 60406.
Make an In-Kind Donation: Organize a food drive, collect or purchase food for our food pantry at St. Blasé or donate items from your home. Donation delivery and/or pick up can be arranged by contacting St. Blasé Food Pantry at 708-563-2407.
We are grateful for the outpouring of generosity we have already seen. We ask for your continued support and prayers as we struggle to feed our neighbors in need in the southwest suburbs.

Queen of Martyrs 5th Grade Hold D.A.R.E. Ceremony
Students in Ms. Mohr’s class participated in the D.A.R.E. Program facilitated by Officer Cunico, from the Evergreen Park Police Department. Officer Cunico worked with the students through weekly discussions and lessons to help teach them good decision making for safe and healthy living! Students were asked to write essays reflecting on things that they learned from the D.A.R.E. Program. 5th Grader’s Leah P. and Marcus H. were asked to share their essays with their classmates and family that attended the presentation that took place this past February. The essays were well written and expressed the students determina-tion to make good choices! Completion Certificates were given to each student during the Assembly. Pastor, Father Marty Marren, Q of M Principal, Mrs. Kathleen Tomaszewski , and Officer Cunico spoke to the students and commended each of them on their achievement. The students were reminded to go forth armed with their new strength and knowledge and to be the difference in the world!
