At one o’clock, start with “Es la una…”

At any other hour, start with “Son las _____ …”

For the first half hour, use “y + minutes” for the number of minutes after the hour.

Examples:• Son las dos.• Son las cuatro y diez.• Son las ocho y veinticinco.• Son las doce y cinco.

Use “cuarto” for a quarter of an hour (15 minutes)

Use “media” for half an hour (30 minutes)

Examples:• Es la una y cuarto.• Son las seis y media.

Use “menos + minutes” for the number of minutes BEFORE the next hour begins.

Examples:• Es la una.• Es la una menos cuarto.• Son las siete menos veintinueve.
