On International Women’s Day, March 9th
2014 UHRC mentored slum women's groups and Federations of
women’s groups in Agra carried the message of building self-esteem, confidence and courage, resilience, the
spirit to strive repeatedly among women in socially disadvantaged bastis (slums/informal settlements) to the
larger society of the city. Initiatives demonstrate the power of community-level women’s collectives as well as
local-area (or ward) level federations of women’s groups reflected in improved paved slum pathways, water
supply, access to maternal and child health care, proof of address and picture ID. Gentle assertion by women’s
group and federation members is also enabling uninterrupted education for children, especially girls whose
education was earlier discontinued after class VIII. 500 women and children participated in the Women’s Day
Naari Swashakti Utsav: On February 12, 2014, in Shahganj, Agra, UHRC along with 22 slum-based women's groups, which are networked into Vishal Federation and two children’s groups organised "Nari Swashakti Utsav" (Festival of Women's self-esteem and Strength). Over 300 basti women's and children's group members building across 40,000 slum population participated actively. Simple guidebooks providing information and application forms of social welfare schemes of different government departments, and a compilation of songs with social and health messages composed by women's groups around popular tunes were released.
