History of Grimaldi Group marks pivotal year

2017 is a pivotal year for the Grimaldi Group in that we are marking the centenary of the birth of our founder, Guido Grimaldi, and

also the 70th year of commercial activities. To celebrate this milestone, a history of the Group (as well as of the Grimaldi family) with the title ‘Grimaldi Armatori: the story of a Family and a Company’ was commissioned. The weighty tome runs to 440 pages. We searched our archives and put together a selection of 300 of the most revealing images, including intimate family photographs and pictures of the earliest vessels. For the current generation of shareholders and managers, this was a valu-able opportunity to put down in print some of the memories and anecdotes that would otherwise be lost to time. The early chapters are to a certain extent a history of the Italian maritime community in the aftermath of The Second World War.More than 300 guests attended November’s book launch in Naples, many bringing anecdotes of their own. The Grimaldi Group, via its shareholders and staff, has roots in southern Italy that are several generations deep. As we have expanded, both organically and via acquisition, these roots have grown, to the extent that we have become a true multinational and world-wide brand, while keeping our headquarters in Naples. The book has many highlights, though the period that really stands out is the last 20 years. In just two decades we have built up a fleet of largely owned roll-on roll-off and ro/pax vessels that is the largest of its kind and developed state-of-the-art logistics services, based on maritime transport, for the biggest vehicle manufacturers. Our formula clearly works in that we continue to take market share from other modes of transport, in many cases moving cargo that would have otherwise been shipped by road, thanks to competitive transport solutions. The quality of our services continue to be honoured with awards. Our Group managing director Emanuele Grimaldi was flattered to be named Entrepre-neur of the Year by the publication ‘European CEO’, while our sister com-pany Minoan Lines was honoured with the prestigious award “Passenger Line of the Year” at Lloyd’s List Greek Shipping Awards 2016. Expansion will continue in this, our 70th year. In January, we extended our passenger and freight service between Italy and Greece by adding Venice calls for the Cruise Europa and Cruise Olympia. We have also inaugurated a new Savona-Porto Torres-Valencia freight service, proving once again how important are the Sardinian and Spanish markets for our motorways of the sea network.Northern European operator Finnlines, now a fully-fledged Grimaldi Group company, has extended its weekly service between Santander, Bilbao and Zeebrugge to Tilbury and Gothenburg. You can read more on these devel-opments in this issue of G-News.One of the focuses of 2017 will certainly be the Italian cabotage market. Just a few months after their launch, the revolutionary Genoa-Salerno and Venice-Bari Motorways of the Sea are performing satisfactorily on both northbound and southbound legs. Genoa-Salerno has a daily frequency, whereas Venice-Bari is up to three times a week, providing shippers with a real alternative to Italy’s clogged up road network.

“Grimaldi armatori: the story of a Family and a company”

Last 11 November, the book “Gri-

maldi Armatori: the story of a Fam-

ily and a Company”, published

by Grimaldi Editori, was presented at

a special ceremony held at the Passen-

ger Terminal in the port of Naples, in the

presence of about 300 guests.

The presentation was attended by the

Undersecretary of State at the Ministry

of Infrastructure & Transport, Senator

Simona Vicari, the Vice President of the

Campania Region Fulvio Bonavitacola,

the Naples Local Councillor for the Sea

Daniela Villani who was representing

the Mayor Luigi De Magistris, Colonel

Ubaldo Del Monaco from the Provincial

Headquarters of the Carabinieri, Colo-

nel Emilio Errigo, Head of Operations at

Central Air & Sea Command at the Guar-

dia di Finanza, as well as other local au-

thorities and dignitaries from the world of

business, shipping and the armed forces.

The audience was welcomed by the

Grimaldi family, notably by Donna Paola

Grimaldi, wife of the Group’s late founder

Guido Grimaldi.

Speakers at the debate, which was mod-

erated by “Il Mattino” editor Alessandro

Barbano, were Senator Vicari, Fulvio

Bonavitacola, Banco di Napoli CEO

Maurizio Barracco, Confitarma (Italian

Shipowners’ Confederation) Director

General Gennaro Fiore, Professor of

Transport Economics at the Università

degli Studi di Napoli Federico II Ennio

Forte, International Propeller Clubs Ita-

lia President Umberto Masucci and RINA

(Italian Shipping Register) Chairman &

CEO Ugo Salerno.

Written at the behest of Guido’s sons, Gi-

anluca and Emanuele Grimaldi, and son-

in-law Diego Pacella, who are currently

at the helm of the shipping Group, the

book is the result of in-depth research

carried out by the journalists Bianca

d’Antonio and Justin Stares. It goes into

great detail about the history of the Gri-

maldi family, from the 14th century up to

the present day, focusing in particular

on the establishment and development

of the Grimaldi Group companies in the

fields of shipping and logistics.

The publication of the book coincides

with the centenary of the birth of the

Group’s founder Guido Grimaldi. Moder-

nity, passion, a spirit of sacrifice, intuition

and forward thinking: these qualities of

this “great captain of industry” were com-

bined with his great humanity. Together,

they made Cavaliere del Lavoro (Knight

of the Italian Order of Merit for Labour)

Guido Grimaldi, who passed away in

2010, a larger than life figure in Italian

and international shipping.

Commencing January 2017, the

Grimaldi Group inaugurated

the New Year by strengthen-

ing its Motorways of the Sea network.

The Group extended to Venice its mari-

time links for passengers and freight be-

tween Italy and Greece, and launched

a new Savona-Porto Torres-Valencia

freight service.

Venice has been included in the Ancona-

Igoumenitsa-Patras itinerary, currently

performed on a daily basis by the ves-

sels Cruise Europa and Cruise Olympia.

Departures from Venice on Wednesday

and Thursday at 01:00 a.m. arriving the

day after in Igoumenitsa and Patras, re-

spectively at 07:00 a.m. and 01:00 p.m.

From Patras, departures are Monday

and Tuesday at 07:00 p.m. and from Ig-

oumenitsa on Tuesday and Wednesday

at 01:00 a.m., arriving in Venice at 08:30

p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Grimaldi Eu-

romed S.p.A., a

company of the Gri-

maldi Group and owner

of the Cruise Europa and Cruise

Olympia, manages directly the Venice-

Ancona-Igoumenitsa-Patras service

while Minoan Lines, a Grimaldi Group

company, has become the general

agent in Greece as well as partner for

some on board services.

With a loading capacity of 3,000 linear

metres of rolling freight, 3,000 passen-

gers and 215 accompanying cars, the

Cruise Europa and Cruise Olympia are

the biggest cruise ferries in the Mediter-

ranean. They are real jewels of the seas,

offering comfortable and high quality

services to passengers: spacious cabins,

an à la carte and a self service restaurant,

bar, wellness centre with sauna, turk-

ish bath and jacuzzi, gym and outdoor

swimming pool, casino and disco.

The new maritime link between Venice,

Igoumenitsa and Patras is in addition to

the current service between these ports

for the transport of rolling freight only.

This is performed three times a week,

both ways by the vessels Eurocargo Tri-

este and Eurocargo Patrasso. Therefore,

departures between the lagoon port and

Greece for the transport of rolling freight

has grown up to five a week.

With this upgrade the Group illustrates

its strategy in the freight and passenger

transport services between Italy and

Greece: offering a wide network of links

between both shores of the Adriatic Sea

which includes the Brindisi-Igoumenitsa-

Patras multi-daily service and the An-

cona-Igoumenitsa-Patras daily service.

In addition, the Grimaldi Group offers

a Ro-Ro service connecting the ports

of Ravenna and Bari with Patras, with

a-three-times-a-week frequency both

ways moving to the Tyrrhenian sea.

On the 17th of January the launching

ceremony for the Savona-Porto Torres-

Valencia freight service was held at the

Grimaldi Porto Torres Terminal. Oper-

ated by two Ro-Ro vessels, the new line

has a daily frequency, granting a service

continuity to the transport companies

also in summer time.

“The great success met by our links to Sar-

dinia during 2016, convinced us to pro-

ceed with the enlargement of our range

of services”, stated Guido Grimaldi, Short

Sea Corporate Commercial Director of

the Grimaldi Group, during the inaugu-

ration ceremony of the new service. “We

believe in the strategic position of Sardinia,

as the logistics platform of the Western

Mediterranean and we want to ensure a

real and constant territorial continuity that

allows to reach more easily the island’s

markets, especially those of northern Sar-

dinia that need a stable, fast and efficient

service throughout the year”, concluded

Guido Grimaldi.

Currently, the Grimaldi Group offers

a wide network of connections to and

from Sardinia: in addition to the histori-

cal connections between Civitavecchia

and Porto Torres to Barcelona, operated

with the two flagships of the fleet Cruise

Roma and Cruise Barcelona, additional

passenger and freight lines are offered

on the Livorno-Olbia and Civitavecchia-

Olbia routes. With regards to pure Ro-

Ro freight transport, many lines link the

ports of Genoa, Livorno and Salerno

with Cagliari and Cagliari with Valencia.

In addition, the Group offers a regular

service for freight transport between

Palermo and the Sardinian capital, the

first direct connection between the two

largest islands in the Mediterranean.

Finnlines extends Spain-Belgium service to UK and Sweden

At the beginning of January, Finnlines extended its weekly service between Santander, Bilbao and Zeebrugge (Belgium) to Tilbury (UK) and Gothenburg

(Sweden). Both destinations are offered in cooperation with P&O Ferries and Swedish Orient Line. This new service maximizes the effectiveness of the Zeebrugge-Bilbao/Santander corridor with a perfectly synchronized transhipment for cargo with origin or desti-nation in either the United Kingdom and Sweden. Faster than any existing connec-tion by road, rail or sea, the synergies between the different services will make it possible to connect any port in the loop within a maximum transit time of five days. The Finnlines service is operated with four modern Ro-Ro vessels that are suit-able for trailers, rolling cargo, containers, mobile and breakbulk cargo. The deck heights and ramp strengths are suitable for a variety of oversized and overweight cargoes.

Emanuele Grimaldi, Managing Di-rector of the Grimaldi Group, was recently awarded as “Entrepre-

neur of the Year and Best Chief Executive Officer 2016” for Logistics in Western Eu-rope by the readers of the magazine “Eu-ropean CEO”.Emanuele Grimaldi was cited as continu-ing the legacy of the Grimaldi family’s involvement in the shipping industry by expanding the Group’s activities to in-clude door-to-door logistics services for cargoes, expecially vehicles. He has tak-en prominent leadership in the shipping

world, holding various positions within companies of the Grimaldi Group as well as institutional positions including the one of President of the Italian Shipowners’ As-sociation (Confitarma), board member and former President of the European Commu-nity Shipowners’ Associations (ECSA), and board member of the International Cham-ber of Shipping (ICS). In the occasion of the awarding, Mr. Grimaldi released an inter-view (available on www.grimaldi.napoli.it) at the London Stock Exchange on the con-tribution of the MoS in the development of European economy.

Another great recognition for the

Grimaldi Group: Costantino Bald-

issara, Commercial, Logistics and Op-

erations Director, was presented with

the “Logistician of the Year” Award for

his exceptional commitment in oversee-

ing Grimaldi Group’s services across a

global platform.

The ceremony was held last 10th of No-

vember at the Claridge’s Hotel in London

during the fifth edition of the “Automo-

tive Global Awards”, organised by Three-

6Zero Publishing Group which has deep

expertise in the automotive sector. The

"Automotive Global Awards" are award-

ed annually by a panel of experts which

identifies the various world excellences

of "supply chain" automotive. Baldissara

was one of 18 companies and individu-

als awarded for achieving the unachiev-

able or for having pioneered a new way

of thinking or working.

Costantino Baldissara started working

for the Grimaldi Group in 1992. Today

he is directly responsible for the Group’s

Commercial, Logistics and Operations

Dept while supervising other depart-

ments pertaining to damage preven-

tion, legal issues, external relations and

research. Currently Mr. Baldissara is

Chairman of Scandinavian Auto Logis-

tics, Automar, Ghianda, Deputy Chair-

man of Palermo Euro Terminal and Auto

Terminal Gioia Tauro, CEO of Sintermar

and COIFI, Board Member of Autuori,

Brucato Deta and Salerno Auto Termi-

nal. Notably he is also Co-Chairman

of the General Motors Europe Logistics

Supplier Council, and past member of

General Motors Global Logistics Coun-

cil. He has been President of the Associa-

tion of European Vehicle Logistics (ECG)

during which he oversaw one of the most

challenging times for the finished vehicle

carrier industry and automotive sector.

“The Euromed Convention today is

20 years old”, stated Emanuele

Grimaldi, Managing Director

of the Grimaldi Group and President of

Confitarma (Italian Shipowners’ Asso-

ciation), during his welcoming speech

at the Molino Stucky Hotel of Venice, the

location where the XX edition of the Eu-

romed Convention took place on 27-30

October. “Our first Convention was held in

1997. Twenty years ago, all trade between

Italy and Spain moved via road or rail. No-

body would shuttle by ship between these

two countries. When we first announced to

ply the route, many people again doubted

if it could ever succeed. Today half of the

trade between Italy and Spain travels by

sea onboard ships, and we employ there

10 vessels carrying in some periods up to

6.000 freight units per week. By that time,

the “Grimaldi Short Sea concept” was ex-

tended to Islands too. But Grimaldi never

stops.”

The XX edition of the Euromed Conven-

tion “From Land To Sea” saw the partici-

pation of more than 500 guests, among

which representatives of EU, national and

local institutions, top representatives of

the logistics, ports, maritime and bank-

ing sectors of the Euro-Mediterranean

area as well as branches and agencies

of the Grimaldi Group in the Mediterra-

nean, North Europe and the USA.

On the 28th of October a Conference took

place at the Venetian Ballroom of the Ho-

tel with a speech of Emanuele Grimaldi,

followed by two panel sessions. During

his brief presentation, Emanuele Grimal-

di illustrated the results and objectives of

the Group. “If 2015 was the best year ever

for the Grimaldi Group, with €2.8 billion

revenue and around €400 million profit,

the first eight months of this year promise

to deliver a 2016 very close to it. We have

seen a growth, respectively of 20% and

90% in cargo and passenger traffic, al-

most one million more passengers than in

2015”, he declared. The West Med Short

Sea Services recorded most of the im-

provements, reaching about a hundred

maritime connections, with Sardinia be-

ing the keystone of the network growth.

“Our next challenge is to satisfy a new de-

mand that we see coming from the Italian

domestic Continental Cabotage market,

a market even bigger than the one of the

two main islands of Sicily and Sardinia”.

It’s worth two million trucks transporting

goods on the North-South axis in Italy,

one serving the Adriatic corridor, the

other one the Tyrrhenian corridor and

this is why the Grimaldi Group decided

to open four services connecting the

ports of Venice and Ravenna with Bari

and Brindisi and the ports of Genoa in

Liguria with Salerno in Campania.

The deployment of more efficient ton-

nage has been the leitmotiv of 2016 for

the Grimaldi Group: 4 ro/ro vessels of

the Grande Lagos series have been

deployed on the Deep Sea services,

improving the frequency and load-

ing capacity on the South America and

North Europe routes to West Africa,

whilst 10 giant PCTC newbuildings will

be introduced on the Europe-US route.

Also ACL introduced three (of an order

of five) brand new G4 con/ro vessels,

units which are twice larger compared

to the G3 ships but with the same fuel

consumption. All ships on orderbook

or delivered are part of the Group’s

last long term newbuilding investment

plan of about € 4 billion launched dur-

ing the last 7 years. The programme is

aimed at strengthening the Group’s net-

work, increase frequency and capacity

offered, reduce the average age of the

fleet and raise the already high standard

of service. The vessel orderbook is built

with the clear goal not to indulge to over

tonnage, but rather to build on existing

cargo flows and replace existing vessels

with more efficient and larger ones.

During the year, Emanuele Grimaldi

stated that the Grimaldi Group reached

a control of 94% and 100% in Minoan

Lines and Finnlines, respectively. Both

companies were the best performers in

their sectors and regions, with satisfac-

tory returns to shareholders and margins

in line with Corporate averages. The oth-

er financial investments of 2016 included

the rise of share property from 33% to

over 48% in the Greek ferry company

Hellenic SeaWays and 50% in the Italian

operator TTT Lines.

With regards of future investments, Ema-

nuele Grimaldi disclosed an upcoming

order of a new generation of ships, the

G5GG, which stands for the “Grimaldi 5th

Generation Green”. The new vessels will

be the most efficient and most sustain-

able roro and ropax units ever built, the

largest, greenest and finest ships of the

world.

Finally, Emanuele Grimaldi underlined

that the Group published for the first time

an audited Corporate Social Responsi-

bility Report. “We are proudly informing

some details of our daily activity: only to

mention some, we employ 13,343 people,

but induce over 23,000 jobs, sourcing

70% of our supplies from served territo-

ries, and reserving € 12 million + 1% of

our Group profits in favour of solidarity

projects”.

Then followed two session debates with

distinguished panellists. The first ses-

sion dealt with a very geographical and

politically rooted topic: “MoS in the Med:

which role for Italy?” and was moderated

by Raoul De Forcade, shipping expert

journalist of “Il Sole 24 Ore”. Panellists

were Simona Vicari, Undersecretary of

State of the Italian Ministry of Infrastruc-

ture and Transport, Paolo Costa, Presi-

dent of the Venice Port Authority, Andrea

Annunziata, President of the Salerno

Port Authority, Pierre Lahutte, Presi-

dent of IVECO, Thomas Baumgartner,

President of ANITA (Italian association

representing road haulage and logistics

companies), Antonio Cancian, President

of Rete Autostrade Mediterranee (RAM)

and Guido Grimaldi, Corporate Short

Sea Shipping Commercial Director of

the Grimaldi Group.

The Motorways of the Sea in Italy have

experienced a strong growth, especially

in recent years. This transport concept

has demonstrated its convenience for a

distance of just 600 km, disproving those

who thought it was convenient for long

distances only. On this point, Guido Gri-

maldi underlined the exponential growth

recorded by the Group, as a result of the

“trailerisation” process, the shift from con-

tainer to trailer transport, which guaran-

tees a faster and more competitive ser-

vice. Short sea transport allows, in fact,

to reduce pollutant emissions by 40%, as

well as to produce benefits in economic

and social terms. On the other hand,

the ro/ro fleet deployed in the Mediter-

ranean routes started being obsolete,

therefore in this respect Simona Vicari

announced a National measure that aims

to scrap ships over 30 years of age. “Our

idea is to include incentives, accepted by

the European Commission (and not in-

terpreted as state aid), to shipowners for

scrapping, that targets the European ob-

jectives to reduce pollution and promote

technological innovation”.

The second panel debate, whose theme

was “The new environmental regulations:

what is next for shipping?”, saw the par-

ticipation of Peter Weiss, Head of Supply

Chain Management of FCA, Ugo Saler-

no, President and Managing Director

of RINA, Patrick Verhoeven, Secretary

General of ECSA, Mike Sturgeon, Execu-

tive Director of ECG, Eddy Bruyninckx,

President of the Antwerp Port Author-

ity, and Emanuele Grimaldi, Managing

Director of the Grimaldi Group. Panel-

lists discussed on environment, policies

and technologies to achieve greener

shipping, moderated by Alfons Guinier,

former Secretary General of ECSA. Dur-

ing the last decade the shipping sector

significantly reduced its emissions by

adopting new technical and operational

solutions as vessel re-blading, scrub-

bers, low sulphur fuels, silicon paint-

ing, smart steaming. Although the tons

of cargo transported from 2007 to 2012

increased by over 14%, the total shipping

CO2 emissions were reduced by 15%.

These numbers show how today ship-

ping is definitely more a solution than a

problem for the world climate change.

Emanuele Grimaldi affirmed that today

shipping is the most sustainable mode

of transport. “Even if over 90% of world

merchandise trade is carried by sea, mar-

itime transport CO2 emissions are actu-

ally marginal, representing only 2.2% of

global emissions.” He declared that the

Grimaldi Group is strongly committed

at reducing nocive emissions. “In 2015

for example our fleet recorded about

10% more ships than the years before, but

produced 10% less of CO2 emissions, this

means that the reduction in emissions per

ship exceeded 20%. This was the simul-

taneous effect of the efficiency generated

by the introduction of newbuildings and

of a € 150 million investment programme

launched meanwhile, aimed at retrofitting

existing units”.

Grimaldi Sardegna Best Agent of the Year 2016

During the XX Euromed Convention Grimaldi Sardegna was awarded as “Best Agent of the year 2016”.

The agency was awarded for its successful job and its effort in developing and promoted the new lines launched by the Group in spring 2016, increasing its market shares, but also for the wider results obtained during the year. The award was presented by Costantino Baldissara, Commercial, Logistics and Operations Director of the Group and Guido Grimaldi, Short Sea Corpo-rate Commercial Director of the Group to Eugenio Cossu, Managing Director of Grimaldi Sardegna, Edoardo Cossu, Managing Director of Olbia and Porto Torres branches and Julia Fernandez, Managing Director of the Cagliari branch.

Grimaldi Lines won Italy’s pres-

tigious World Travel Leaders

Award 2016. The award was

presented on the 7th of November in

London at the WTM World Travel Lead-

ers Awards ceremony by Roberta Rianna,

Editor-in-chief of L’Agenzia di Viaggi, to

Francesca Marino, Passenger Depart-

ment Manager at Grimaldi Lines.

“The World Travel Leaders Award is a

coveted prize and one we are proud to

receive,” commented Francesca Marino.

“The new Livorno-Olbia and Civitavecchia-

Olbia routes marked a veritable turning

point in the development of shipping ser-

vices between the Italian mainland and

the country’s two largest islands: for the

first time consumers are offered a high-

end product at low cost prices. Our ships

are less than ten years old on average, so

passengers can travel in comfort, and they

are designed to reduce CO2 emissions to

a minimum, thus cutting environmental

pollution.”

The panel of experts, which includes rep-

resentatives of the World Travel Market,

London, one of the most important exhi-

bitions in the world tourism sector, and of

ETOA, the European Association of Tour

Operators, chose Grimaldi Lines in rec-

ognition of its new routes which helped

the tourist development in Sardinia and

Sicily as well as its environmental efforts

in the direction of sustainability.

On the 1st of December the Gri-

maldi Group was awarded as Top

Logistics Provider in the Ocean Carrier

category by Chase New Holland (CNH)

Industrial, the industrial Group specializ-

es in the design, production and sales of

agricultural and construction equipment,

commercial vehicles and powertrains.

The prestigious prize, given during a

ceremony held at the CNH Industrial

Village in Turin, awards the Group for

its outstanding performance achieved

in the transportation of CNH Industrial

whole goods (Iveco, Magirus, Astra, etc.)

worldwide. The Group was recognized

for its reliability, collaboration, f lexibil-

ity and performances in line with the ex-

pectations and quality standards of CNH

Industrial.

“We are honoured to receive this award,

as a result of the fruitful collaboration

with CNH Industrial,” said Costantino

Baldissara, Commercial, Logistics & Op-

erations Director of the Grimaldi Group

while collecting the award. “We appreci-

ate having been chosen as the best logis-

tics services provider and we are proud

of this achievement, which is a demonstra-

tion of the professionalism and dedication

of our work” concluded Baldissara.

The Group is a consolidated provider

of integrated logistics services based

on maritime transport to the biggest ve-

hicle manufacturers: in particular, it of-

fers logistics services for the transport

of vehicles between North Europe, the

Mediterranean, West Africa, North and

South America.

The Grimaldi Group has always con-

sidered the constant upgrade of its

maritime personnel as a matter of

paramount importance. In this regard, it

periodically invites crew members to at-

tend in-house courses where they can be

trained and kept up-to-date about new

requirements from the various depart-

ments.

During such courses seamen can also

benefit from the exchange and share

experiences of all the events happened

and possible remedies and/or new pro-

cedures to apply to prevent are also

made aware of any critical events oc-

curred in the fleet along with the possi-

ble solutions and/or remedies to adopt

in order to prevent a reoccurrence. The

Group organizes two types of courses

for maritime personnel: training cours-

es and ship’s handling courses. Specific

contents of the latter are: pitch propeller

handling and ship’s behavior; mooring

and unmooring; simulation of transit in

the rivers, locks and channels; anchor-

age manoeuvring; handling of the ship

in adverse weather conditions as (sea

– wind – currents – fog – etc). Some of

these events are reproduced by the

Group’s Simulator located in the Com-

pany’s Headquarters in Naples.

The Grimaldi Bridge and Communica-

tion Simulator was already equipped

with various mathematical models refer-

ring to various Grimaldi ships such as

the G2 class (Grande Nigeria) the PCC

class (Grande Roma) and others. As of

last November the Simulator has been

upgraded by adding new ports such as

Santos, Vitoria, Le Havre, Rio de la Plata

river (ports of Buenos Aires and Zarate),

Marseilles, Barcelona, Ancona, Livorno,

Genoa, the new Deurganckdok Lock

of Antwerp, Abidjan, San Pedro, Lagos

(with new Grimaldi terminal). In addi-

tion, new mathematical models of the G4

vessels (Grande Lagos), the Eurocargo

Genova class and the G4 ACL class ves-

sels (Atlantic Star) have also been added.

Furthermore, a special commission for

the “Marine Casualties” is also provided,

which deals with analysis of difficult situ-

ations (e.g. when a collision or near miss-

ing is analyzed). The event is reproduced

in the simulator and all parameters are

evaluated by such commission. In case of

need the Master and Officers are invited

in the Group’s headquarters to discuss

and revise the elaboration of the event

analysis. Manager Responsible of the

Bridge and Communication Simulator

Training Courses is Capt. Michele Si-

niscalchi.

Scholarship to top Nautical Institute students

As every year, last December the two top students of the “Duca degli Abruzzi” Nautical Institute, located in Pozzuoli near Na-

ples, were awarded by Donna Paola Grimaldi, wife of late founder of the Group Guido Grimaldi. During a brief ceremony held at the Group’s headquarters in Naples, Donna Paola presented the award to Pasquale Orsusanno and Benito Buono, respectively the best students for the engine and deck sectors at the “Duca degli Abruzzi” Nautical Institute. Each student received a € 1.000 scholarship, in memory of Guido Grimaldi, as well as a proposal to start their carrier on board a Grimaldi vessel. The late Guido Grimaldi was a brilliant student of the “Duca degli Abruzzi” Nautical Institute where the aula magna is named after the founder of the Grimaldi Group.

The Grimaldi Group once again gave its aid to the humanitarian project “Uno zaino per tutti” (“A backpack for everybody”), or-

ganised by the Consul of Benin in Naples Giuseppe Gambardella. Last 26 of January at the Chamber of Commerce of Salerno the official delivery of school and stationery equipment collected by the Consulate took place, worth about € 40.000. Among the guests present to the delivery of the material were, besides Consul Giuseppe Gambardella, the Regional Councilor Franco Picarone, the president of the Port Agency Michele Autuori S.r.l. Ferdinando Autuori, port and military authorities of Salerno as well as Paul Kyprianou, representative of the Grimaldi Group. The material was shipped free of charge onboard a Grimaldi vessel bound to the port of Cotonou and will be delivered in seven differ-ent municipalities to be distributed to children of Benin next March.
