THOUGHTS FROM THE JOURNEY

QUARTERLY NEWS

a quarterly publication highlighting peregrine events and services around the world in order to share best practices and lessons learned, promote

sustained leadership development, and foster continuous improvement in higher education.

The Association for Transnational Higher Education Accreditation (ATHEA) was officially recognized this spring during a founding event held in Vienna, Austria. The Founding Members of ATHEA include universities located in France, Belgium, Germany, Switzerland, and the Netherlands. The purpose of ATHEA is to assist higher education institutions within the greater European area towards obtaining institutional (regional) accreditation. Peregrine Academic Services is providing consulting services for ATHEA including accreditation document development, operational assistance, and matters related to organizational growth.

The need for ATHEA grew from the shift in policies within many European countries regarding academic accreditation. Just as it exists within the United States, European ministries realize the importance of having independent, transnational accreditation bodies to conduct the needed quality assurance for higher education. In the US, both institutional (regional) and programmatic accreditation is performed by nonprofit accreditation entities that are recognized by the Council of Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA).

ATHEA is a voluntary, non-governmental, nonprofit membership association that is dedicated to quality assurance and improvement through accreditation via peer evaluation. Accreditation by ATHEA will help promote public confidence in the institutional mission, goals, performance, and resources through its rigorous accreditation standards and their enforcement of those standards. Peregrine is using the recently published Standards and Guidelines for Quality Assurance in the European Higher Education Area (ESG) as the basis for ATHEA’s accreditation standards, quality assurance processes, and internal governance.

An important strategic goal for ATHEA is to eventually be listed on the European Quality Assurance Register for Higher Education (EQAR) once ATHEA is eligible for EQAR application. Peregrine is focused with its ATHEA consulting services towards achieving the EQAR listing by ensuring that the processes and procedures are aligned with the ESG.

This spring, I had the distinct pleasure to meet with 14 business students at Gillette College to discuss leadership. The session was part of the student’s strategic management course. After a short introduction to the topic, I spent the next hour answering their questions and engaging them in a leadership-based dialogue. Discussion areas included job interviews, global enterprises, employee development, envisioning, team communications, mentoring, leadership values, and succession planning.

I was impressed with the student’s practical perspectives on leadership. We did not have a theoretical discussion and instead, the students focused on leadership from personal experiences and from what they have observed within our community. Although our time was limited, I was fascinated with the depth and breadth of their leadership inquiries.

After the session, each of the students wrote me a letter and stated their key takeaways from the visit. These wonderful summaries truly give life to the concept of leadership. From the value of diversity to the importance of expectations, these students certainly have the proper foundation upon which to form a great career in business leadership.

At the end of the day, it seems that it all comes down to the quality of the people involved and the leader’s role in determining the culture, and then working tirelessly to recruit, select, develop, and retain the best possible people and allow their skills to grow the organization. If these Gillette College students are any indication of our future, then that future certainly looks to be very exciting. — Olin Oedekoven

REGIONAL UPDATES | LESSONS LEARNED, EVENTS, AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

The Association of MBA’s Global Conference for Deans and Directors 2015 took place on 13 – 15 May 2015 in Prague, Czech Republic. For this year’s event AMBA gathered the strongest ever line-up of Speakers and Delegates including Deans and MBA Directors from all six Continents. The Conference theme was ‘Shaping the Future of Management Education.’ Approximately 250 business school deans attended. Peregrine presented “Comparing Student Learning Assessment Results by Delivery Method: Online, Blended, and Traditional Campus Program Types” on 15 May to the largest breakout of the conference. We at Peregrine hope to continue to strengthen our partnership with AMBA as we move into the future.

Over the past couple of years, Peregrine has been asked if we could develop a Digital-MBA curriculum. In response, we have begun the development of the curriculum for a D-MBA this summer. In addition to the standard course work for an MBA, we are developing a concentration in Leadership. If your institution would be interested in employing this curriculum, please contact your CSM.

We hope you are having a good summer break and we plan to see you this fall at one of the regional meetings.

Dr. Olin Oedekoven, President of Peregrine Leadership Institute and Peregrine Academic Services, Brenda Bishop, Director of Client Services, and Alimaa Jamiyansuren, Director of Global Services and Marketing, facilitated a two-day workshop on “Leadership Essentials in the Higher Educational Environment” on April 28-29, 2015 in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia. Mr. Ya Tumurbaatar, Deputy Minister of the Mongolian Ministry of Education, Culture, and Science, delivered the opening remarks for the workshop in which he noted the importance of this training event, especially in light of ongoing higher education reform efforts initiated by the government of Mongolia.

Leaders and faculty representatives from 18 Mongolian colleges and universities participated in the workshop. They mentioned that this was a unique workshop because of its applied nature and that it supplied them with tools and techniques they could utilize immediately in their respective workplace environments.

This “Leadership Essentials” workshop was the second in a series of seminars organized by Peregrine for Mongolian participants, and was based on the Peregrine textbook with the same title that was published with the Mongolian and English languages side-by-side. The first “Leadership Essentials” workshop for Mongolian government officials was held in February 2013 as a weeklong event in Gillette, Wyoming.

REGIONAL UPDATES | LESSONS LEARNED, EVENTS, AND CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT

Peregrine Academic Services Director for Latin America Operation, Dr. Luis Rodriguez, was invited as a guest speaker at the X FIMPES Commission Research Seminar. FIMPES (Federación de Instituciones Mexicanas Particulares de Educación Superior) is a membership-based accreditation organization located in Mexico with a membership that includes 110 higher education institutions. The FIMPES membership represents over 500,000 students.

FIMPES aims to improve communication and collaboration within the membership and seeks further collaboration with other educational institutions located throughout Mexico. The 10th Annual Conference was recently held in Mexico City (DR). FIMPES brings together leading private universities in Mexico. Established in 1982, the organization has been granting accreditation since 1994. FIMPES is a not-for-profit entity

Luis’ presentation to the FIMPES participants included a discussion on how to use direct assessment to evaluate student learning and benchmark results for learning outcomes analysis. Specifically, Luis provided the results from Peregrine’s business program assessment service, which is used throughout Latin America for programmatic evaluation. The service is available in Spanish, as well as in several other languages. The exam service is based on the Common Professional Components (CPC) in business/management education as defined by the various accreditation agencies for business program accreditation. FIMPES is exploring how to foster quality assurance and international exposure for its membership.

Olin Oedekoven and Laurel Vicklund attended the African Association of Business Schools (AABS) Annual Conference in Johannesburg, South Africa in May. The theme of the conference was on celebrating success and how the higher education community within AABS is engaged with their students, local partners, government agencies, and throughout the social sectors of Africa. Several of the speakers noted the importance of business schools maintaining community engagement.

Joining Peregrine at the AABS conference was Dr. Abraham Lincoln, President of the African Institute for Organizational Development (AIOD). The AIOD is Peregrine’s partner office in Africa, which is located in Accra, Ghana. Abraham and Olin visited several schools in South Africa during the trip and discussed leadership, quality assurance, and programmatic accreditation. Peregrine Academic Service provides online testing for several African universities and Peregrine Leadership Institute has conducted leadership workshops and seminars in Africa.

Peregrine is currently in discussions with the Association of African Universities (AAU) regarding the need for transformational development of African’s higher education systems. Peregrine looks to be a major partner with the AAU in helping the members achieve their vision regarding the quality of African higher education. Later this fall, Peregrine will attend and present a paper on accreditation reforms at the 7th International Conference and Workshop on Quality Assurance in Higher Education in Africa.

This year Peregrine Academic Services had the great pleasure of conducting their Second Annual User’s Group Meetings at both the IACBE Annual Conference in Baltimore and the ACBSP Annual Conference in Philadelphia. We were also able to host our first User’s Group Meeting in Mongolia this year, which was very exciting.

This year at the User’s Group Meetings we showcased our new Educational Site which gives clients additional resources and functionality in the Client Admin site including greater reporting capabilities and the ability to share best best practices from around the globe. It was a day of great conversation that included information on LTI integrations we are now offering, new functions of our student technical support, and our move to a four-year rolling aggregate. We also reviewed our new General Education and Criminal Justice assessment services and new supplemental topics of Real Estate, Homeland Security, and Sports Managements. Bill Parrott led a discussion on best practices in the area of our Academic Leveling Courses, advantages of mid-point assessments, how no two programs are ever alike, and the importance of the assessment.

If you have not attended an annual User’s Group Meeting in the past, be sure to join us at our meetings next year. Hearing new ideas and being able to share best practices is one of the highlights of our year.

Our leadership development programs typically include organization-specific seminars and workshops. Starting this fall and winter, the Peregrine Leadership Institute will be conducting two unique programs designed specifically for a wider audience. The first is a leadership capstone series for supervisors and managers and the second is an executive leadership program for new and emerging CEO’s.

Leadership Capstone includes four 2-day workshops, one-on-one mentoring, a 360° leadership assessment, and the MBTI Personality Type profile. The four workshops are: Leadership Foundations, Coaching & Mentoring, Leadership Essentials-Performance Management, and Leadership Character. Conducted in Casper Wyoming, the series starts in October 2015 with workshops scheduled every two months. The series is open to anyone who is interested in learning more about applied leadership for today’s workplace.

Our Executive Leadership Program includes five 2-day workshops starting in January 2016. The series is conducted in partnership with the Rocky Mountain Performance Excellence and the Mountain West Credit Union Association. The purpose of the Executive Leadership program is to develop senior level decision makers who are able to lead their organizations capably and effectively towards achieving strategic goals. The Executive Leadership program achieves this purpose by developing awareness, understanding, and workplace application of the Baldrige Excellence Framework. Through self-study, evaluation, change management, and leadership, the organization transforms into a dynamic, customer-centric structure with greater clarity of focus on core values, mission, and vision.

PROFESSIONAL GROWTH THROUGH COACHING

“I have learned so much about myself and have more confidence in how to leverage my strengths.” This quote is from a participant at the end of their individual coaching session in our Capstone Leadership series. With the guidance of an experienced coach, individuals look at what is keeping them from being great leaders. One participant described how he saw himself with new eyes and knew what he needed to do to become a better supervisor and supporter of his team. Coaching is a way to help someone develop and act on his or her own insights. Mentoring is a great approach when you want to share experience and knowledge that can help the other person think beyond their current way of doing things. Effective mentors know that they have to go beyond saying, “Here’s what I think you should do.” Instead, they share when they faced similar situations, how they thought through the situation, the approaches they tried, what worked, what did not, and what they learned from all of that. PLI offers coaching and mentoring to aid you in becoming an even greater leader. A 2-day Coaching and Mentoring workshop will be held in Gillette August 25-26 – click here to register.

Meeting internal and external accreditation needs can be challenging. Particularly when an institution has 3 residential campuses and 20 program centers in the US, 5 international program centers, different delivery modalities, and 2 graduate and 18 undergraduate programs. This is the situation for one of Peregrine’s clients. These complex needs are met through a combination of comprehensive assessment plans and powerful reporting functionality. The plans integrate Peregrine programmatic exam services with a variety of internal direct and indirect assessments and the former provides the common thread that weaves through the plans for each program/location/cohort combination. Peregrine’s comprehensive yet flexible reporting tools are integrated with the institution’s new Enterprise Reporting Resource Planning (ERP) system that provides assessment data in a form that readily enables analysis and improvement planning. The key is starting with the end in mind, taking a systematic approach, and wise selection of tools/services.
