10.1 TRAINING – SIX BRICKS - HRTC Date: 6 October
Venue: Heronbridge
Run by: Linda Smith
No. of participants: 10 teachers
Time: 10h00 – 12h00
This was the final training for the Level 5 practitioners using 6B in the piloting project. They are all using
the bricks at least once a day in their centres. All practitioners provided some good feedback.
Additional ideas, games were tested.
10.2 VISIT – DANISH EMBASSY – THINGO & RUDZANI Date: 8 October
Venue: Thingo & Bloubosrand

The two representatives from the Danish Embassy wanted to visit the sites, in preparation for the Crown
Prince’s visit. The first visit was to Thingo in Cosmo City followed by a visit to Rudzani in Bloubosrand. A
visit to one (or both) centres was organized for the 2nd November from approx. 15h15 – 16h00.
10.3 SKYPE MEETING – TAKALANI SESAME Date: 8 October

Meeting to discuss the upcoming training session in the Eastern Cape. This training session will be for 12
practitioners from 6 sites who are piloting the activities before the full roll out in May 2016.

10.4 AGM – CFE Date: 12 October
Venue: CfE

The first AGM for CfE was held. The minutes are available from Linda Smith.
10.5 SITE VISIT – LIVE MOYA – MOBILE BUS Date: 13 October
Venue: Randfontein
No. of participants: Brent, Linda, Clare and 3 other people from
LiveMoya
Time: 11h00 – 14h30
CfE were taken on a tour of the mobile bus in Randfontein, Dwaarskloof
Plot no. 9. CfE were asked to submit a proposal for services to support
LiveMoya and Kumaka NGO in their work with four practitioners on the
mobile bus. These practitioners work with approximately 60 children
every weekday. The bus has limited resources for the practitioners and
learners and they would like to get some charity boxes and training for the
practitioners. LS has submitted a proposal to assist and monitor the site
over the next year. Follow up will only take place next year.
10.6 SITE VISIT – LOVE TRUST Date: 15 October
Venue: Thembisa Township

Time: 10h00 – 12h30
NF & LS visited Love Trust. This
organization runs a teacher resource centre and is actively training practitioners on a level 3, 4 and 5.
On the same premise there is a crèche for children from Tembisa Township – extremely well run. A little
further down the road, there is a primary school, Nokuphila being run from a house. CfE will be assisting
with charity boxes for the crèche and Grade 0 and 6B for the Foundation phase. Training will take place
in November and January.

10.7 TRAINING – PLAY WITH A PURPOSE Date: 15 October
Venue: CfE
Time: 14h00 – 17h00
PWAP were recently allocated a number of charity
boxes. This training session was organized for principals
and practitioners from the Matlosana District – 12
schools in total. Some of these practitioners will also
assist with further training at their own schools. Next year PWAP will look at
a different district and training will be organized accordingly.
10.8 TRAINING – NACCW Date: 16 October
Venue: Cape Town
No. of participants: Linda & 15 teachers
Time: 09h00 – 13h00
Working with the NACCW is going to be a national
project involving people and centres from all 9
provinces. All of the participants in this training session
were teachers. They are also going to be trained as
facilitators and will be assisting in training other ECD
practitioners.
10.9 TEAM BUILDING – LEGO SA Date: 16 October
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Brent & 10 LEGO SA employees
Time: 09h00 – 14h00
The LEGO SA team were treated to a morning visiting
nearby schools and crèches before getting involved in
playing with Six Bricks and some team building exercise.
The session was run by Brent.

10.10 TRAINING – SIX BRICKS Date: 20 October
Venue: CfE
Time: 13h00 – 15h30
Nancy ran a 6B training session for 6 teachers
from Mimosa Montessori, 4 teachers from Small
World as well as Duncan and Heleen. The session
looked at what 6B is and how to incorporate this manipulative in the ECD environment, especially with a
Montessori focus.
10.11 TRAINING – TAKALANI SESAME Date: 21-22 October
Venue: Eastern Cape
Time: 2 Full days
CfE was involved in creating DUPLO Charity box
activities that use the Takalani Sesame play mat.
LS was asked to train the practitioners and facilitators who would be testing the activities during
October and November. The training took place over 2 days after which the practitioners were visited in
their classrooms, demonstrating some of these activities. June Lee from Sesame New York was part of
this training and monitoring process.
10.12 TRAINING – CB INTERMEDIATE Date: 22 October
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Nancy & 12 participants
Time: 10h00 – 12h00
An intermediate CB training session was run for
practitioners and principals from My Little Angels, Lappop
and Together we Care. Although this was a 2nd training session and a follow up after the initial training,
2 practitioners arrived not having completed any training. This training session included additional
materials and links to literacy and numeracy.

10.13 TRAINING – CB INITIAL - JABULANI Date: 28 October
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Evah & 5 participants
Time: 10h00 – 12h00
Initial training for Jabulani. Evah conducted the training with the practitioners who were eager to take
home the different activities. A very positive response from Jabu, who runs a mobile unit, taking the
DUPLO charity boxes to various ECD sites in Johannesburg.
10.14 MEETING – NTATAISE Date: 29 October
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Linda and Jane Evans
Time: 14h00 – 15h00
Jane Evans discussed a partnership with CfE and Ntataise to provide Charity boxes to approximately 16
organisations. She would like to organize training for these organisations using the “train the trainer”
model. After the discussions it was agreed that 90 boxes would be made available in February 2016
followed by another 90 boxes in June or July 2016.
10.15 MEETING – SESAME Date: 30 October

June Lee discussed some of her findings from the classroom visits during the Takalani Sesame piloting of
DUPLO activities and the play mat.

11.1 INTERVIEW – PRIME STARS Date: 2 November

Brent was interviewed by Prime Stars. He explained CfE’s role in this year’s Step up to a Start up
competition. CfE sponsored the first prize for the winning school.
11.2 VISIT - DANISH CROWN PRINCE Date: 2 – 5 November
Venue: JHB and Cape Town
No. of participants: Delegation from the Danish Embassy and the
Crown Prince of Denmark
Time: 4 days
On Monday morning LS took the minister from Denmark and the rest of
her delegation to All Mighty Crèche in Bloubosrand. BH then travelled to
Cape Town with Peter Paul and was part of the Crown Prince visit to SA.
11.3 TRAINING - CHARITY BOX - BARAGWANATH HOSPITAL Date: 12 November
Venue: CfE
Time: 10H00 – 13H00
Various medical personnel from Baragwanath hospital attended this
training. They are excited to use the charity box in the pediatrics unit
at this massive hospital. The training was aimed slightly differently
with focus on physiotherapy, psychology and social welfare.
This project was initiated by the Kirsty Watts foundation.

11.4 TRAINING - CHARITY BOX - LOVE TRUST Date: 13 November
Venue: Love Trust
No. of participants: Nancy & 10 participants
Time: 14H00 – 16H00
Nancy trained 10 practitioners working with Grade 000
– Grade 0 at the Love Trust. These teachers were
excited and enthusiastic about using the charity boxes
in their teaching.
11.5 TRAINING - CHARITY BOX - NOKUPHILA SCHOOL Date: 13 November

Linda trained 12
practitioners
working with Grade 1 - 4 at Nokuphila School. The school is a
project run by the Love Trust and caters for children from the
nearby township, Thembisa. The principal is an experienced
teacher who is eager to work with the DUPLO charity boxes as
she realizes that many of these children come from deprived
homes and the bricks will stimulate their enthusiasm for
learning.
11.6 PRESENTATION - SYNERGOS Date: 17 November

11.7 MEETING – IMPACT AFRICA & IMPACT KIDS Date: 17 November
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Linda, Michelle Franzen and a student
Time: 10H00 – 11H00
Michelle runs the outreach programme called Impact Africa. They have 5 divisions and one of them is
Impact Kids. There are three sites for Impact Kids – Kyasands, Diepsloot Ext. 2 and Kwaggerfontein.
Michelle would like to apply for charity boxes and training for the practitioners from the informal
settlements. Training has been planned for 11th January 2016.
11.8 TRAINING – KHULULEKANI PRIMARY SCHOOL Date: 17 November
Venue: Khululekani
No. of participants: Linda, Nancy & 12 teachers
Time: 13H00 – 16H00
This was the 2nd training session for the Foundation Phase
teachers and a follow up after the initial training. The
teachers are still developing their own skills, some stronger
than others. This training session helped the teachers with integrating the DUPLO into their literacy and
numeracy curriculum.
11.9 PRESENTATION – NTATAISE Date: 18 November

Linda presented the collaboration and project objectives for Ntataise in 2016. There was an
introduction to the charity boxes and the logistics of training and development were discussed.

11.10 TRAINING – CHARITY BOX – PRINCIPAL’S FORUM GERMISTON Date: 19 November
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Evah & 12 teachers
Time: 10H00 – 12H00
Evah completed an initial training session with a number
of principals from the Germiston Forum. All of these
principals are awaiting DUPLO charity boxes for their
schools.
11.11 WORKSHOP – KAGISO TRUST Date: 24 November
Venue: CfE
No. of participants: Brent, Linda, Paul, Angie, Siza
Time: 11H00 – 14H00
This workshop was held to design and plan a strategy for the Kagiso Project which will be based in the
Free State. The project will involve learners from Grade 1 through to Grade 7 and will include:
Grade 1 – 3 Six Bricks
Grade 4 – 7 LEGO Charity Boxes
Grade 6 – 7 Robotics
Kagiso will be drawing up a concept document and begin the process of planning.
11.12 DOCUMENTATION – SIX BRICKS VIDEOS Date: 24-25 November
Venue: CfE
Time was set aside to complete short videos using Six Bricks. A total of 17 videos were completed.

Linda presented and ran a Six Bricks workshop for delegates at the ECD conference.

Brent, Philip and Duncan ran a hands-on team building activity for the finalists in the Step up to a Start
up competition.
12 DECEMBER 2015
12.1 AWARDS PRESENTATION – STEP UP TO A START UP Date: 1 December
Venue: Woodmead
Time: 18H00 – 23H00
The awards ceremony for the prize winners of the Step up to a Start up competition was held. CfE
sponsored the first prize for the winning school in partnership with Intel.
12.2 CONFERENCE – SA PARTNERS Date: 1 – 3 December
Venue: Kievitskroon, Pretoria
