Mr. Forte earned an accounting degree from the University of Minnesota and worked as the business manager at Minnesota Outward Bound School in Ely before going to work in the accounting department at Inland Steel’s

Minorca Mine, from which he has retired. Mark’s wife, Judy, is from Clontarf, Minnesota, and they have two daughters, Kristin Troutwine who lives on Ely Lake, and Jill living in Minneapolis. Students Attend AAUW Book Sale By—Mr. Ufford

February is I love to Read Month, and on Friday, February 1st, 43 Eveleth – Gilbert students from grades 7 – 12 went on a field trip to the book sale, at the Hibbing Armory, sponsored by the American Association of University Women. When we arrived, the students jumped right in looking for books, helping each other, and other customers find books. We brought 43 students and we bought 443 books. I heard about 12th grade students offering to buy books for 7th graders who ran out of money. I saw our students helping the workers organize the tables as they searched for books. I am very proud to show off our students at this event.

I always receive complements about our students from the members of the AAUW working the sale, as well as the other customers. The excitement of our students is a big topic of conversation for everyone at the book sale. I couldn’t begin to guess how many people approached me to complement the school district that is willing to provide this opportunity to for its students. The faces of the workers and other customers reflected the excitement of our students. They truly appreciated having these young people be a part of this wonderful event.

As the students finished up and began to buy their books, the sat in groups to talk about the treasures they had found. People continued to comment on the excitement our students showed and how polite and helpful our students are. This experience reflects the positive way in which our school community affects Eveleth – Gilbert students.

“I Love to Read” Events Planned

Students and staff “kicked-off” I Love to Read Month on Monday, February 4th.

Amy Terrio, Senior High student and daughter of 3rd grade teacher Karen Terrio, entertained Franklin students with a concert sing-along at their kick-off event. Franklin’s theme this year is Everybody Reads and goes along with the fact that everyone, everywhere reads.

There are several activities planned at Franklin, including guest readers and dress up days. Students will be playing READ-O for the entire month and each class has been working on an alphabet quilt which are displayed in thehallway. There will be contests and prizes donated from local businesses for the class with the most reading done in February, as well as the top 15 readers in each grade.

I Love to Read Month will be celebrated at the Gilbert Campus and the theme is: Story Laboratory: Reading Makes You A Superhero! The reading goal is for students to reach a

combined total of 2400 Accelerated Reader points in the fifth and sixth grades as well as the seventh and eighth grades.

Students will have the opportunity to enter a poster contest and a story writing contest. A Super Hero Parade will be held each Friday at which time the class who read the most during the week will have an opportunity to go on parade throughout the school dressed as super heroes. There will be a medallion

search from February 19th until the 22nd in the Media Center and an Ice Cream Social sponsored by the Gilbert Campus PTO will be held on February 28th.

Mrs. Jensen’s fourth grade class performed a skit recently representing Taxation without Representation.

The students drew a letter to determine what group they would portray: a colonist, a loyalist, members of the parliament, and of course the King! The King, played by Molly Thiel would then tax the colonists taking away some of their tokens and rewarding the loyalists with candy. The King could even tax the colonists for complaining too much.

Special Project for Third

Graders

Bob Hendrickson, parent of 3rd grader Jordan Hendrickson, provided materials for a special project for Mrs. Young’s class work on.

Mr. Hendrickson hand-cut wood into the shape of a hat rack and the students were able to paint and design the wooden rack however they wanted to.

This was an awesome project and the students were very excited to bring them home!
