THEATRE

Welcome to our summer season. This programme is chock-full full of theatre, storytelling, music, comedy and much more. This is my first summer in Folkestone, and I am looking forward to everything that lies in store. Not only do we have the Quarterhouse events to get excited about, but also the Folkestone Airshow, Jim Jam Theatre’s festivals in the coastal park and a whole host more family events and festivals. And of course, days on the beach. The rest of the Creative Foundation is also going to have a busy summer with the Open Quarter weekend and the opening of the Folkestone Triennial 2014 (see page 18 for details).

This season is built around bringing brilliant artists to Folkestone and creating opportunities for people of all ages to get involved in the programme. Whether it is a post-show discussion, an intimate evening with an author in the bar or craft workshops for the Follow The Herring exhibition, we want you to come and watch, and then come to connect, learn, play and create. Have a look at our Get Involved section (see page 17) to try your hand atdrawing, poetry or improvisation. And if what you want to do isn’t on offer, let us know! Everything we currently do has been suggested by a local artist. We are always looking for new ways to reach new audiences... and you can help us do that.

If you are 16-23 years old, you can join our Young Company for a completely free two week summer intensive workshop with our Associate Artists Transport Theatre (see page 17). Don’t miss this completely unique opportunity to develop a new show with a professional company.

Bring on the summer!

Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model Saturday 3 May, 7.30pm Tickets £10 / £8 concessions Suitable for ages 16+ Running time 60 mins approx

In an audacious, provocative protest against flagrant global attempts to sexualise and commodify childhood for profit, Bryony Kimmings and her niece Taylor, nine, decided to

play the global tween machine at its own game. This show tackles the issues at the very core of their plight head on. In typically screwball and humorous fashion, Kimmings begs the question, what does it really take to be a Credible Likeable Superstar Role Model for a child of the 21st century?

Hilarious, heartbreaking, troubling and inspirational. Kick-ass in all the right ways. Time Out

A work of almost staggering warmth and fragility. Scotsman

Caroline Horton and Company and China Plate present

You’re Not Like The Other Girls ChrissyFriday 9 May, 7.30pmTickets £10 / £8 concessionsSuitable for all ages (ideal for ages 10+)

By Caroline Horton

January 1945, Paris is liberated. Christiane waits in Gare Du Nord for a ticket to England where she will be reunited with her fiance. Whilst she waits, this gloriously irrepressible Madmoiselle recounts the extraordinary love story between her, an eccentric, acutely myopic Parisienne and a tongue-tied teacher from Staffordshire.

From a chance encounter at Cheadle tennis club, their story takes us on to cosmopolitan 1930s Paris before their inevitable separation by war. A separation which she hopes today, will finally come to an end. A tender, comical and ultimately poignant portrait of one woman’s experience of love and war.

Winner of Stage Best Solo Performance Award 2010 and nominated for an Olivier Award 2013.

Commissioned by China Plate, Warwick Arts Centre and mac Birmingham.

It’s a tale she tells with plenty of charm, but a gratifying lack of sentiment…As somebody whose grandparents went through similar, I’m not ashamed to say I found myself welling up at the dénouement. **** Time Out

bread&circuses presents

Wot? No Fish!!Saturday 17 May, 7.30pmTickets £10 / £8 concessionsSuitable for all ages (ideal for ages 10+)

Written and performed by Danny Braverman, directed by Nick Philippou.

In 1926, shoemaker Ab Solomons drew a picture on the wage-packet he gave to his wife Celie. He then drew a cartoon weekly throughout their marriage until the early eighties. These cartoons, chronicling the Solomons’ family life through all their ups and downs, were recently discovered by his great nephew.

Danny Braverman’s solo show tells the funny and moving story of how he uncovered the lost art of his great-uncle. Premiering to critical acclaim at Edinburgh Festival Fringe 2013, bread&circuses’ new show takes audiences on a journey of searing honesty, spanning decades and generations.

An extraordinary story about love and art, history… and catering.

So warm-hearted it makes you melt. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

Characters come vividly to life in a show that’s understated but something of a gem. The Times

An incredibly honest show presented in such a humble and simple way that it can’t help but stir memories. Simple, effective and beautiful. Audience member, Edinburgh Fringe

Follow the Herring presents

Get Up and Tie Your FingersFriday 25 July, 7pmSaturday 26 July, 2pm & 7pmTickets £10 / £8 concessions / Family £30 (2 adults, 2 children)Suitable for ages 10+

By Ann Coburn

Spring 1881 is tipping over into summer and everyone is waiting for the silver darlings, the migrating herring, on which all their livelihoods depend. Packing the herring is women’s work and young Molly must learn to tie her fingers before joining a gutting crew, but it is the tie between a mother and a daughter which is at the heart of this award-winning play.

Set against the real storm that sent 129 gallant Eyemouth fishermen to a watery grave, this is a deeply affecting tale of three courageous women, reworked to include a vocal soundscape performed by the women of the Deal and Dover Landmark Show Choirs, with singers from the Really Promising Company, led by Maddie Cordes.

Get Up and Tie Your Fingers will be staged alongside an exhibition in the Quarterhouse bar, the exhibition will include pieces created locally in craft workshops with artist Di Burns. For more information about how to participate in the exhibition or the choir, please contact Quarterhouse Box Office.

An enormously empowering statement about the possibilities for change in ordinary women’s lives. Lyn Gardner, The Guardian

A High Street OdysseySaturday 21 June and Sunday 22 June11am, 12.30pm, 2pm & 3.30pmAdults £10 / £8 concessions / Family £30 (2 adults, 2 children)Suitable for all ages*

By Inspector Sands

The landscape is so familiar, snaking through the town centre, the bricked over thoroughfare, the brightly glowing hoardings, the bins, the bollards, the benches, the big brand names. But what histories, what mysteries, lie behind the pedestrianised retail zone? Who was Mr. Boot? And Mr. Smith? Who is Claire? And when did she get so into accessories? Who is that woman over there? And what on earth is she doing…?

Witty, intimate, strange and epic, A High Street Odyssey dissects the characters, reveals the secrets, considers the future and stares deep into the soul of the Great British High Street. It will never look the same again.

A High Street Odyssey is a promenade audio-tour of a pedestrianised shopping street, which has been performed at festivals all over the UK and adapted for Folkestone as part of Open Quarter weekend (see page 18 for details).

A High Street Odyssey was co-commissioned by Without Walls, Greenwich + Docklands International Festival and Watford Palace Theatre.

Devised and directed by Douglas Rintoul

1001 Nights collects together some of the greatest folk tales ever told. Here they are re-imagined by Shahrazad – a lively young girl who, torn between her old home in the East and her new life in England, re-tells the extraordinary stories of her childhood to her new-found friend, who understands not a single word she says...

Using the things she finds around her, Shahrazad fashions saucepans into crowns, old pipes into enchanted telescopes and a mop into a magic carpet to transport us to a fantastical and imagined world of kings, viziers, and jinns.

This compelling, funny and totally absorbing play made by Kent-based theatre company Transport, wowed audiences at the Unicorn Theatre, London in 2013 and now is now back for a UK tour.

The ‘Mark Steel’s Back in Town’ show, based on the Radio 4 series in which Mark write’s a show centred around each town, has now been to at least 5 million places. It’s a sparkling verdict on humanity that he has mocked them all and is somehow still alive.

For this show Mark has found dozens more towns to humiliate, as well as pledging to discover what makes our own town ridiculous.

There will be pictures, and ranting, some people will call things out, and you’ll be a far better audience than the miserable arses from down the road.

FILM FILM

Film at Quarterhouse Philomena Thursday 1 May Rating: 12AOscar nominated and BAFTA winning Philomena tells the true story of a world-weary journalist who helps a woman find her long lost son. National treasure, Judi Dench, produces yet another outstanding performance as Philomena, whose son was taken away from her decades ago after she fell pregnant and was forced to live in a convent.

12 Years a Slave Thursday 5 June Rating: 15Director Steve McQueen has created a masterpiece. 12 Years a Slave tells the true story of Solomon Northup, a free black man from upstate New York, who is abducted and sold into slavery. With stunning performances from Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender and newcomer Lupita Nyong’o captured beautifully on film, 12 Years a Slave deservedly won the Best Picture Academy Award.

Dallas Buyers Club Thursday 3 July Rating: 15Texan rodeo cowboy Ron Woodroof is diagnosed with AIDS in 1985. But he is not going to take his diagnosis lying down, working around the system to help AIDS patients get the medication they need. Based on a true story Matthew McConaughey stars in this story of one man’s quest to overcome prejudice and beat the system. With incredible Oscar winning performances from McConaughey and Jared Leto, Dallas Buyers Club is full of spirit and a lust for life.

No-Wave Cinema Club Folkestone Quarterhouse has once again teamed up with local culture collective No-Wave to bring you some of the finest cinema around. Last season they brought you ground-breaking documentary in the form of Chasing Ice, classic French cinema with Band à Part and so much more in between. All complemented perfectly with a series of extras including limited edition zines and carefully curated drinks menus. This season will be even better with a myriad of films and additional events. To find out what will be going on alongside each of the films below keep an eye on the Quarterhouse website or Facebook page for details…

Act of Killing Thursday 22 May Rating: 15Focusing on the Indonesian killings of 1965–1966, Oppenheimer’s documentary shines a spotlight on the perpetrators. Challenging them through film to act out scenes about their experience of the killings, the film seizes the opportunity to expose how a regime that was founded on mass murder could be overlooked. This is a film that challenges audiences like no other.

Wadjda Thursday 19 June Rating: PGWadjda is a 10-year-old girl living in Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. Despite her mother’s refusal through fear of societies repercussions, Wadja is determined to become the proud owner of a beautiful new bicycle.

12 Angry Men Thursday 17 July Rating: UThis 1957 American drama by director Sidney Lumet is an example of how one just voice can win against a majority of injustice. What begins as an open and shut case of murder soon becomes a mini-drama of each of the jurors’ prejudices and preconceptions about the trial, the accused, and each other. Set almost completely in one room the intensity and conflict will have you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

This is Spinal Tap Thursday 14 August Rating: 15Now let’s turn it up to eleven as one of Britain’s loudest rock bands takes centre stage for one of the best loved mockumentaries that turns twenty this year. Charting fictional heavy metal band Spinal Tap on what proves to be a fatal tour, the film satirizes the wild behavior and musical pretensions of hard rock bands, as well as the rock documentaries of the time.

Gordon Corrigan: A Great and Glorious AdventureWednesday 14 May, 7pmTickets £7 / £5 concessions

Join us for an evening of intimate discussion with Gordon Corrigan and his latest novel A Great and Glorious Adventure.

The Hundred Years War was fought between 1337 and 1453 over English claims to both the throne of France by the right of inheritance and large parts of the country that had been at one time Norman or, later, English. The fighting ebbed and flowed, but despite their superior tactics and great victories at Crecy, Poitiers and Agincourt, the English could never hope to secure their claims in perpetuity: France was wealthier and far more populous, and while the English won the battles, they could not hope to hold forever the lands they conquered.

Folkestone Book Festival presents

Irma Kurtz Wednesday 16 July, 7pmTickets £7 / £5 concessions

Irma Kurtz, Cosmopolitan’s ‘unshockable queen of advice’, talks to Book Festival curator Geraldine D’Amico about the seismic transformations that have taken place over the last four decades as witnessed through the readers’ intimate stories from mother-daughter relationships through to eating disorders, office politics and those perennial areas of interest: love and sex.

Warm, funny and perceptive, this promises to be a great conversation and a chance to meet and ask your questions to everybody’s favourite agony aunt.

She will also sign copies of her book, My Life in Agony, available at a discounted price for one night only.

In this book, Gordon Corrigan explores a war that helped shape two nations and how it still has implications today for both Britain as a country and its military tactics.

Gordon Corrigan was commissioned from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in 1962. He was awarded the MBE (military) in 1996 and retired from the Royal Gurkha Rifles in 1998.
