Spring 2015

Page 2: Quarterhouse Brochure Spring 2015

Welcome to our spring season at Quarterhouse. You might notice our brochure looks a bit different. We have three exciting festivals coming up: Women of the World to mark International Women’s Day, Election to prepare for the General Election and Normal? to celebrate Mental Health Awareness week. Each festival is co-curated with a Kent-based artist and Folkestone Fringe, and features a mixture of talks, workshops, music, spoken word and theatre. What you see in this brochure is just the beginning. This is intended as a call to you, to help us create the festival you want to see. If you are interested in being involved, make sure you come to a ‘think in’: an open meeting to discuss the themes and content of the festival. If you have ideas, expertise and opinions, and an enthusiasm for sharing these with a diverse audience, please get in touch and get involved.

If you pinned me against a wall, I’d probably admit to being a liberal. Of course, pinning me against a wall is exactly what I’d expect from someone like you.

A show about the gulfs we can’t talk across, and about the way we choose to see only the evidence that proves we’re right. Working with research into the phenomenon of confirmation bias, Confirmation is an attempt to have an honorable dialogue, real and imagined, with political extremism. To find out how we believe what we believe, and how we can end up so far apart.

FILM FILM

Film at Quarterhouse

Northern Soul Thursday 29 January Rating: 15Starring Steve Coogan and Antonia Thomas (Misfits) Northern Soul is easily one of the best British films of last year. Watch Wigan in the 1970’s be transformed by the influx of black American soul music. Northern Soul follows two friends who dream of bigger things once they discover a new sound. It’s a tale of music, dance, youth culture, hopes and dreams. You will leave the cinema wanting to dance.

20,000 Days on Earth Thursday 12 February Rating: 15Writer, actor, singer, poet, man, legend Nick Cave is the focal point of this incredible new film. Following Nick Cave over 24 fictional hours it is not just a documentary about an Australian rock star but also a film that examines what makes us who we are, and celebrates the transformative power of the creative spirit. With cameo appearances from Kylie Minogue and Ray Winstone among many others you will leave this film feeling inspired and maybe a little confused.

Wadjda Thursday 5 March Rating: PGWadjda is a 10-year-old girl living in Saudi Arabia. Although she lives in a conservative world, Wadjda is fun loving, entrepreneurial and always pushing the boundaries of what she can get away with. Following an argument with her friend, a neighbourhood boy she shouldn’t be seen with, Wadjda is determined to become the proud owner of a beautiful green bicycle. Wadjda’s mother won’t allow it, fearing repercussions from a society that sees bicycles as dangerous to a girl’s virtue, so Wadjda decides to try and raise the money herself, refusing to give up on her dream.

Boyhood Thursday 19 March Rating: 15In 2002 director Richard Linklater (School of Rock, Bernie) cast a 6 year old boy, Mason, for his new film. Over the next 12 years they made film history. It is a coming of age story and we literally see the main character growing before our very eyes. Starring Ethan Hawke and Patricia Arquette as Mason’s parents and newcomer Lorelei Linklater as his sister Samantha, Boyhood charts the rocky terrain of childhood like no other film has before.

Maps to the Stars Thursday 2 April Rating: 18Director David Cronenberg (Videodrome, The Fly) aka The Baron of Blood, takes us on a journey to the underbelly of Hollywood. Maps to the Stars follows the lives a fictional Hollywood dynasty and how their world is torn apart when Agatha (Mia Wasikowska) enters their lives. It is a film that is full of secrets and lies, money and rehab. A story that is told in David Cronenberg’s signature style.

Ides of March follows a fictional presidential campaign that is full of passion, deceit and everything in between. George Clooney, Ryan Gosling, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Paul Giamatti are just some of the all-star cast that are all vying to win. Directed by Clooney, Ides of March keeps you gripped from start to finish. We hope it will also inspire you to vote on Thursday 7 May 2015.

The Man Whose Mind Exploded Saturday 9 May Rating: 15Drako Zarharzar remembers working with Salvador Dali, but he doesn’t remember yesterday. Funny, charming, exotic, and oblivious to others, at 76 he lives “completely in the now” following brain damage that robbed him of his ability to create memories. Filmed over four years, The Man Whose Mind Exploded attempts to understand and accept the world view of someone with serious brain damage, and it resonates for anyone who’s tried to care for someone who may not be great at caring for themselves.

RESIDENCIESTALKS

Dan Cruickshank: The Recreation of Lost BuildingsFriday 17 April, 7pmTickets £14 / £12 concessions

Dan Cruickshank, respected television presenter, author of many respected books on architecture, and honorary member of the Royal Institute of British Architects, explores what we find irresistable about fine old buildings.

Architectural wonders that define a people or place have been lost and recreated. Warsaw old town, parts of Dresden, the palaces of St. Petersburg; the schloss in Berlin. In the UK the Euston arch – completed in 1837 and the first great monument of the railway age and one of the finest pieces of Greek Revival architecture ever built, was demolished in 1961.

After years of search most of the stones of the Arch have been recovered from a river bed in East London, and the government has recently decreed that the Arch should be rebuilt.

Germaine Greer: The Disappearing WomanFriday 13 February, 7pmTickets £14 / £12 concessions

Forty years ago it seemed that women were about to take their rightful place in the world, in parliament, in the church, in the judiciary, in the workplace, but when you open the newspaper you find that news is still made by men in suits.

The female most likely to be seen in the sports pages will be a horse. Women are disappearing too because flesh is not allowed. As soon as girls accept the size, role and shape of adult women, they begin to disappear. With each stage of their lives, as they become successively wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, they become less visible. Virtually obliterated are the three-quarters of care home residents who are women.

Germaine Greer attempts to explain this state of affairs and to suggest some strategies for change.

The company will be in residence in January to continue research for a new performance. The project seeks to dispel some of the social taboos and charged politics around the relationships between men and girls.

The Ajax Project by The Band8th – 12 March, 20th – 24th April The Band is a new theatre ensemble, made up of 8 actors, designers and directors, dedicated to making contemporary theatre from the classical theatre repertoire. The Band will be working on their first show at the Quarterhouse. This is a new work based on Sophocles’ Ajax, the Greek tragedy about the mightiest Greek warrior who inexplicably massacred thousands of sheep & cows overnight. The show plays around the contrast between the heavy emotion & seriousness of the Ancient Greek world and the passivity & security of our modern lives.
