A Comparison of Cognitive Demand

Where we began, where we are, and where we are going.

A Comparison of Cognitive Demand

A typical question from the adopted 9th grade textbook

• Which of the following is the best definition of an inference?

• a. a harsh criticism

• b. an educated guess

• c. an accurate retelling

• d. a repetition

Students must know and be able to identify an inference by grade 5.

A typical question from the CCSD 9th grade quarterly assessment • Read the following short excerpt

from “The gift of the Magi” then answer the following questions.

• “She stood by the window and looked out dully at a gray cat walking a gray fence in a gray backyard. Tomorrow would be Christmas Day, and she had only $1.87 with which to buy Jim a present.”

• What is the tone in this excerpt? What word or words does the author use to communicate the tone of this passage? Cite textual evidence to support your answer.

A Comparison of Cognitive Demand

A typical question from the adopted 9th grade textbook

• Which form of the past participle

of the irregular verb give belongs in the following sentence?

• Mme. Sofronie had ____ Della $20.00 for her hair.

• a. give • b. gave • c. giving • d. given DOK 1 – Common Core presupposes that 9th grade students know parts of speech

• Based on the excerpt from The Gift

of the Magi, what can you infer about Della’s character traits?

• A. She is a person who feels sorry for herself.

• B. She seems to put her own feelings above those of others

• C. She is a very generous and caring person

• D. She blames others for her problems

DOK 2-3 requires an inference from implied reading.

A typical question from the CCSD

9th grade quarterly assessment

Page 31: Quarter 3 Student Learning Data Grades K-12by grade 5. A typical question from the CCSD 9 grade quarterly assessment Read the following short excerpt from “The gift of the Magi”

A Comparison of Cognitive Demand

From the 8th grade textbook: “Captain My Captain”

• What is the secret to reaching someone with words? Both “The Road Not Taken” and “O Captain! My Captain!” use words to get a message across to readers. In an essay, explain the poems’ messages, and then tell which poem reached you most strongly with its message.

• Partially text dependent

• NMSBA 100% text dependent

• PARCC 100% text dependent

From the 8th grade CCSD assessment

• The network of people who helped slaves escape to the North was called the Underground Railroad. Using the informational text, summarize the facts about the Underground Railroad. Provide details and cite evidence to support the

summary.

• Text dependent

A Comparison of Text Complexity

From the 10th grade textbook

“He got up, shoving his hands into the back pockets of his gray wash slacks, stepped to the living-room window beside the desk and stood breathing on the glass, watching the expanding circle of mist, staring down through the autumn night at Lexington Avenue, eleven stories below. He was a tall, lean, dark-haired young man in a pullover sweater, who looked as though he had played football, probably, but basketball in college. Now he placed the heels of his hands against the top edge of the lower window frame and shoved upward. “ Jack Finney “Content of a Dead Man’s Pocket” Lexile 1070 GE 8

Based on the Common Core State Standards grade level reading band, our 10th grade anthology is now an 8th grade anthology.

From the 10th grade CCSD assessment

“The indolence I love is not that of a lazy fellow who sits with his arms across in total inaction, and thinks no more than he acts, but that of a child which is incessantly in motion doing nothing, and that of a dotard who wanders from his subject. I love to amuse myself with trifles, by beginning a hundred things and never finishing one of them, by going or coming as I take either into my head, by changing my project at every instant, by following a fly through all its windings, in wishing to overturn a rock to see what is under it, by undertaking with ardor the work of ten years, and abandoning it without regret at the end of ten minutes; finally, in musing from morning until night without order or coherence, and in following in everything the caprice of a moment.” ― Jean-Jacques Rousseau, “Confessions” Lexile 1250 GE 10-11

Currently, there is nothing on the market, at any price, that will prepare students for the cognitive demands of the PARCC Assessment. We will have to continue to create our own curriculum tools and our own assessments based on the information we receive from PARCC and the PED to meet the unique needs of our students. PARCC and virtually all professional development companies are encouraging less dependence on textbooks.
