Step 2 - Xtensions

Disable the Xtensions A. Custom BleedsB. OPI

Custom Bleeds allows asymmetricalbleeds to be created, as we prefer asymmetrical bleed this feature is notrequired. The same goes for OPImanagement since all art should beincluded in the file.

After Disabling the xtensions thereis a need to restart QuarkXPress.

• After restarting check to makesure that these extensions havebeen disabled.

A. Make sure Type 1 fonts and images are available and linked. • From Utilities Menu select Usage.

• In the Font Tab watch for Application Styling. Font names, especially those with stroke weight or Italic in their name should be followed by <<Plain>>. Fonts with <> or <>, for example, may not image as expected.

• The Status of all images in the Pictures and OPI Tabs must be OK to insure they will be embedded in the PS file.

• There should be no Placeholders.

B. From File menu Select: Print... ( P)

III. LAYOUT TAB

A. The top window is the setup for the pre-ferred form of Postscript for PDF, the unseparated – Composite – version.• Print Style: • Save single pages. Key in page no.• Separations: Unchecked. • Bleeds: Set to 0.125”• Registration: Select Center, and Key-in

Offset: 12 pt to add plate marks for page proofs.

• Leave all other options unchecked.B. The lower window has one change, the

Separations box is checked. This creates a separated Postscript file which will later distill as a multipage PDF – one page for each Process and Spot color specified for the page. Make this selection only when:• a placed image is a DCS

[Desktop Color Separation]file or a Copydot scan file.

* See more about Spot colors in the Output Tab instruc-tions below.

IV. SETUP TAB

• Printer Description: Select ACROBAT PDF PPD.

• Paper Size: Will be Custom when you insert your publication’s page dimen-sions.

• Add 1” to Paper Width and Height to accomodate Registration marks.

* In some workflows page proofs are either unnecessary or Registration marks are added as part of the proofing process. If this applies to you, enter your publication trim size height and width. The advan-tages of this workflow is smaller file size and pages that will position with zero offsets when imposed.

• Check that Reduce or Enlarge is set at 100%. This is particularly important if you send your pages at a reduced size to an in-house proofing device.

• Page Positioning: Center.• Orientation: Portrait.

V. OUTPUT TAB

This window has two variants. One is for Composite Postscript and the second is for Separated Postscript.*See Layout Tab, page 3, B. above.

A. Composite Postscript

• Print Colors: pull-down is set for Composite CMYK.

• Only Process colors are listed.

B. Separated Postscript

• Plates: Pull-down, there are three choices.1. Used Process & Spot: If Spot color/s

are used on the page they will appear in the Plates list ONLY if Separations was checked on the Layout Tab. If other – unwanted Spot or RGB – colors were used on the page uncheck the boxes in the Print col-umn in front of their name/s.* If a PMS number appears twice, with different extensions – like C and CV – or, if the page or ele-ments of the page will be reused, it is advisable to fix the colors in QXP before saving PS files. Go to Edit Menu > Colors... to make the changes.

2. The top Output Tab window has All Process and Spot checked. This is helpful only because it shows potentially unwanted colors – as in this example where RGB elements were used in QXP.

• To eliminate them select Convert to Process.

• Resolution: will be 2400 dpi.

• Frequency: will be133 lpi.* These are DDAP defaults defined by the print driver.Resolution and line screen fre-quency, however, are set when halftone or stochastic screening frequency is applied by the RIP.

VI. OPTIONS TAB

1. All of the check boxes are left unchecked.

2. Output: Normal [outputs hi res]

3. Data: Binary

4. OPI: Include Images will be grayed-out.

VII. LAYERS TAB

The functions in the window can be ignored for this process, but check to be sure:

1. Print is checked.2. Apply to Layout is unchecked.3. That the Default row, unlike

this example, is NOT highlighted.

XI. SAVE TO FILE WINDOW

* Plan ahead: Create an Issue/Date folder named for yourjob on your Hard Drive or FileServer before opening QXP.Another option is an “In” hot fold-er for Acrobat Distiller.

1. Name the .ps file in the Save Asfield. Our preferred naming con-vention is “jobMMYYp000”.

The job part of the naming con-vention should be a short (3 or 4character abbreviation of the titleof the book, It is recommendedyou contact someone in thePreMedia dept to ensure the filename will not conflict with another client’s). Follow the job name with 4 digits depicting the monthand year (e.g. 0704 for July of 2004), then a lower case “p” to separate the year from the folio. Finally, the folio would be best in 3 digit form (001 for page 1, 002 for page 2, covers can be namedcv1, etc.) Naming convention is critical to the smooth processing of files through TWiST andMiSTRAL automation and input handling.

2. Navigate to the file/folder destination.• Click Save button to return to Print Window.

3. Click Print button to generate the PostScript Printer file.

NOTE:

Fat Postscript files embed Type 1 fonts as vector graphics. MultiMaster fonts are not supported by thisprocess. All high resolution graphics and images are saved in the file as well. Fonts missing from these graph-ics are not flagged by QXP. The PostScript RIP will abort or substitute Courier for the missing font. Embeddedart and ads must be checked to insure their fonts are available when the PS printer file is made.PS printer files are a closed format. We cannot intervene if there is a problem with the page. You must makethe correction and transmit a corrected version for output.
