We are rushing out without saying goodbye to mom and dad. When we got to Ben Tre, it was past noon. We stopped over for a rushed lunch and we went to Dai Sanh. They took us to a nice house fully furnished at Nga Ba Thap. Waiting. First night away from home.

January 14, 1979January 14, 1979Late last night, brother-in-law told us that we are leaving. I half believed him. Are we really leaving? They told us, just get ready. We were sitting up all night. At 4:00am we left for the boat landing. Everything was in chaos. Finally, we got onboard and we waited inside the boat. At 6:00am, the boat began to leave. Su-Su and Truc Co are sleeping soundly. The boat is moving smoothly down the river. At 8:00am, we arrived at the mouth of the river. I took the kids up to the deck. All together there were seven small boats. We are so lucky to get on the leading boat because brother-in-law is the captain. We are beginning our way into the ocean.

February 1, 1979February 1, 1979For more than ten days I didn’t bother to write because there wasn’t enough food. Could not lay down. Could not sleep. The boat is sailing endlessly. The boat departed on the 21st of January and has been going around in circles. We are getting hungrier everyday. I can see that Su-Su and Truc Co have lost weight. They are asking for food all the time. The food supply that I brought from Saigon is dwindling. They promised to supply us with food supplies but everyday we only get one bowl of congee or half a glass of milk. At the bottom of my misery, I somehow feel safe and keep on praying. Most of our food portion is saved for the children. I eat very little, but I don’t feel hungry as much. I feel helpless because I can’t take care of the children.

February 6, 1979February 6, 1979Waiting all day, and still just seeing open skies and blue water. The ocean is rough. Waves as big as a house. The boat rocks dizziness onto our faces. We had a bowl of congee this morning, and then waited desperately. Hunger has reached its peak. It has been twenty days. There is sudden news that the captain attempted to abandon ship. Panic struck everyone. The younger men are asked to guard the lifeboats on deck and to surround the captain’s quarters. We are determined to land in Hong Kong...
