Is Qualitative Research
complex & complicated?

Fundamentally, qualitative research seeks to preserve the
form and content of human behaviour and to analyse its
quality, rather than subject to mathematical or other
formal transformation.
Qualitative research methods are distinguished from
quantitative methods that they do not rest their evidence
on the logic mathematics, the principle of numbers, or the
methods of statistical analysis (Anderson & Meyer, 1988)
Qualitative Research

Qualitative methods will be chosen in situations where a
detailed understanding of a process or experience is
wanted, where more information is needed to determine the
exact nature of the issue being investigated, or where the
only information available is in nonnumeric (e.g. Text, audio
or visual) form.

Intro to NVivo 8
Qualitative research software helps people to manage,
shape and make sense of unstructured information.
It provides a sophisticated workspace that enables you to
work through your information.
With purpose of built tools for classifying, sorting and
arranging information. A qualitative research software that
gives you more time to analyse your materials and
discover patterns, identify themes, glean insight and
develop meaningful conclusions.

A Brief History of NVivo
Belief that technology lead to productivity.
Excellent data organization.
Utilize mixed methods (qualitative and quantitative data)
Add demographic information (e.g. individuals)
Modeling
Saves time when used properly (steep learning curve)
Notes: software is not a substitution for training in
qualitative methods, coding, or for knowing the theoretical
foundations for each. How and why you code (process)
should be detailed in your methods.

Managing Data with NVivo 8
Nvivo sports an Microsoft Office 2007/10-like interface.
Import, sort and analyse virtually any piece of information in any language, including videos, interview recordings, documents, digital photos, etc.
Nvivo 8 works with transcripts or without them and has the capability to work directly with audio and video files.
Built-in media players allow you to watch/listen to multimedia without leaving the program.

What Exciting About NVivo 8
You can merge separate projects together but still keep track of who did what including project notes.
Uncover subtle connections in ways that simply aren't possible manually with queries.
Reflect and add your insights and ideas to analysis. Rigorously justify your findings with evidence. NVivo
helps you link findings back to the original data that supports it.
Easily interchange data with applications like Microsoft Excel, Word, IBM and SPSS Statistics.

What Exciting About NVivo 8
Easily work with material in your own language. You can now compare the analysis done by different
individuals and teams and get a report of what percentage is the same.
Nvivo 8 has chart making ability (including 3D charts).
New web-based, animated tutorial system.
