    Qualifying Criteria for the 2017 Island Games

    The Event

    1. The Triathlon competition for the 2017 Island Games will take place in Gotland on astill unspecified date etween 2! and "0 #une 2017.

    2. Costs are currently estimated at $1%200 per head% which with Go&ernment assistancewould mean each triathlete should pay around $'00. The final amount re(uired foreach person will depend on the actual costs of transport and the standard ofaccommodation chosen.

    ". Gi raltar will e allowed to send up to ten triathletes% who may e male or female.)ll triathletes who represent Gi raltar must meet the (ualifying and selectionconditions that are set out elow.

    !. The race will pro a ly consist of a *tandard +,-lympic / istance triathlon%comprised of a 1 00m swim% a !0km non drafting cycle% and a 10km run. )lltriathletes will e on the course at the same time% though males and females may startseparately.

    . Gold% *il&er and 3ron4e will e awarded to the first three males and the first three

    females to finish the Indi&idual e&ent.'. Indi&idual performances also count towards the Team competition% for which Gold%

    *il&er and 3ron4e will e awarded to 5en6s and omen6s teams. The time of theGi raltar 5en6s Team will e the sum of the times achie&ed y the first threeGi raltarian men to finish. 8ikewise% the time of the Gi raltar omen6s Team will ethe aggregate time achie&ed y the first two Gi raltarian women.

    Qualifying Conditions

    1. )ll triathletes must meet nationality% residence and other statutory re(uirements inorder to represent Gi raltar in the 2017 Island Games.

    2. 9ach triathlete who would like to compete in #ersey must pay a $100 refunda ledeposit and register with the Triathlon Technical Committee y 29 th February 2016 .

    ". Competing triathletes must achie&e a time elow 2 hours 10 minutes for men and 2hours 2: minutes for women% on the G)*);8os )ngeles Time Trial course% etween 1#uly 201' and " )pril 2017. Those who achie&e this in 201' must also complete aTime Trial etween 1 #anuary and " )pril 2017% in order to demonstrate theircontinued fitness.

    !. )ll triathletes who wish to (ualify at an official time trial must e paid up mem ersof

    a high performance standard in competiti&e triathlons?

    a willingness to compete in related disciplines% such as duathlon or running races% inorder to impro&e as a triathlete% and not @ust to win pri4es?

    a positi&e attitude to the sport of triathlon% and to fair competition? a dedicated training programme% focussed on peaking in the Triathlon competition of

    the 2017 Island Games.

    The Triathlon Technical Committee reser&es the right to consider other competiti&e performances in order to resol&e selection issues% and to ultimately interpret all the ruleslisted here.

    Triathletes who have been selected may be required to perform additional races, trials ortraining sessions between the end of the selection period and the Island Games. Individualswho fail to attend may be dropped from the Team.

    The GASA/Los Angeles Course

    This is the standard course that has een used to pro&ide a compara le standard for localtriathlon performances. It consists of the three parts>

    1. ) sea swim of standard distance% appro=imately 1 00 metres% from the G)A) rowing pontoon to the G)*) floating @etty% and ack to the 5AC steps% where the swimmerwill e=it. The clock will e stopped when the wetsuit has een remo&ed and thetriathlete crossed the line that stands for the Transition )rea. The time recorded willcom ine the *wim plus ,Transition 1 of a continuous triathlon. This stage willnormally take place on a Briday ut may also e arranged for a *aturday.

    2. ) cycle on a standard course% appro=imately !0 km% consisting of two lengths of a 20km stretch of road etween 8os )ngeles +near #imena/ and Castellar. This stage musttake place less than 60 hours after the swim % typically on the *unday following theBriday. The following rules apply during the ike leg>

    i. rafting will not e permitted. If the Timekeeper suspects drafting has taken place% times recorded may not e considered &alid for (ualification purposes.

    ii. )ny cyclist who is o&ertaken must drop ack 10m immediately and thencontinue to fall ack to 2 m within the ne=t kilometre.

    iii. )ny cyclist who has een o&ertaken y another may only mo&e ahead of theother on a single occasion in a gi&en Time Trial% and only if the a o&e rulesha&e een o ser&ed.

    . Times awarded y the official Timekeeper may only e corrected y appeal to theTriathlon Technical Committee.

    '. The specific courses used for swim% cycle and run may e amended to alternati&eswhich% in the opinion of the Triathlon Technical Committee% pro&ide a compara lele&el of difficulty to the courses descri ed a o&e.

    7. The Triathlon Technical Committee will make e&ery effort to schedule trials so as toaccommodate the needs of indi&idual triathletes% especially those who are asedoutside Gi raltar. )ll triathletes must ear their own transportation costs to and fromtrials.

    :. Indi&idual triathletes may attempt the course any num er of times in order to secure(ualification% though the Triathlon Technical Committee may consider all trials asindicators of a triathlete6s state of fitness.
