NORTH AMERICA CORE PRODUCT BROCHURE
AN INTEGRATED STRATEGY – OUR COMMITMENT TO THE INDUSTRY. Since the 1930’s, Quaker Chemical Corporation (“Quaker”) has been a major supplier of process fluids to the steel and aluminum industry. With every transition, we’ve been there: solving problems, reducing costs, and improving every step of the process - in plants around the world. And now, we’re bringing even more to the field.
Through recent acquisitions Quaker has expanded its range of products to include specialty lubricants and greases. These investments demonstrate our dedication to our customers in realizing their challenges, and providing solutions from beginning to end.

CHALLENGES FOR GREASE USERS. With the demands of the modern steel industry, taking care of operations doesn’t just mean keeping the mill rolling, it also means finding ways to lower costs, improve performance and extend the life of your machines. To select the right grease a number of different factors need to be considered. The biggest challenge is achieving the right blend of characteristics, for the best lubricant performance over the longest possible time, at the optimum total cost of operation.
NLGI CONSISTENCY NUMBER. The NLGI number indicates the relative hardness of a grease. The number correlates to the penetration distance of a standard cone into a lubricating grease, measured in tenths of a millimeter. The number is established by the National Lubricating Grease Institute (NLGI), and is used in combination with several factors to determine the best lubricant for the application.

MAIN PROPERTIES OF GREASE
Pumpability: Ability of grease to flow under pressure through the lines, nozzles, and fittings of the grease dispensing system. Important for cold temperature applications and centralized grease systems.
Dropping point: The temperature at which the grease releases a drop of liquid under standard test conditions, indicating the maximum usable temperature.
Shear (mechanical) stability: The ability to resist changes in consistency after prolonged working of the grease. Determined by the type and amount of thickener.
Water resistance: The ability to withstand the addition of water without adverse effects on the grease structure. Measured by “water wash-off” and “water spray-off” tests.
Texture: The appearance and feel of a grease, which affects its adhesiveness and ease of handling. Texture depends on base oil viscosity, type and amount of thickener, additives and manufacturing process.
Oil separation tendency: This refers to the separation of the oil component from a grease during storage. Most pronounced in soft greases with a low viscosity base oil.
Compatibility: This refers to the behavior of a mixture of greases with different thickeners and/or other additive components. Incompatible grease mixtures result in grease softening, leakage past the seals and poor service performance.
Material compatibility can vary with manufacturers, grade, lubricant grade, applied temperature, and strain. Quaker recommends that design engineers test all synthetic lubricants with any plastic or elastomeric component to ensure compatibility in their application.
STANDARD METRIC CONVERSION
Multiplying the conversion factor 0.453592 with the amount of pounds generates equivalent value in kilograms to measure the same quantity of weight and this process is known as lbs to kg conversion. The below is a pounds vs. kilograms conversion chart.
