• Self-Righteousness led to double standard of “sins” for non-believers– “City on a hill…the

eyes of the people are upon us”

• Uneven application of laws

• Narrow-mindedness• Scapegoating- witchcraft

trials– Trials led to reform for

separation of church and state

• No dancing, music

• Direction relationship with God• Practical, not formal education• Pacifism• No oaths• Martyrdom• Minimalist • Belief in equality• Opposition to slavery• Tolerant• No formal doctrines, theological statements or

ceremonies• Wide, regional movement from Europe• Repentance

Quaker Problems…• No central authority• Pacifism led to people taking advantage of them– Native American raids on settlements

• No public institutions• Repressed by Puritans
