In 2004, Gene Plett and David Martin, had a vision to revive the hardware industry in Myerstown. Several local hardware stores had closed around this time. Out of their mutual passion for retail and their community, Dutch Country Ace Hardware along Route 422 in Myerstown was founded. Renovations of the former Dutch Way Myerstown location began in early 2004, and in October of 2004, Dutch Country Hardware officially opened its doors. Every detail of the business endeavor was carefully overseen, with an emphasis on hiring local employees that understood the projects and concerns of their customers. This family owned business certainly recognizes the competition of the big box stores. Gene and his staff strive to “walk between the legs of the elephant,” by building relationships with the local community, maintaining competitive prices, and being convenient. Working alongside of Gene since 2007, Eric Readinger the general manager of Dutch Country Ace Hardware conveys, “Customer service is part of everything we do”. The emphasis is not only on consumer relationships, but creating a family atmosphere and a team centered employee approach. While big box stores focus on

fast moving merchandise and large quantities, Ace holds to the merit of quality and value and maintaining products that customers in the area still want, but can’t find anywhere else. The appeal of the Ace Corporation is that a vast majority of the stores are independently owned, and

the company is a member owned co-op. While the size of the stores may seem insignificant compared to other chains, all 4,600+ Ace stores combined as a co-op of independently owned stores have tremendous buying power, and the flexibility to find any product a customer may need, even locating an item outside of their local store’s inventory.

In 2015 the opportunity came for Dutch Country to purchase a second location in Hamburg, Mountain View Supply and Rental, an enterprise that continues to serve the need for farm supplies, Purina feed, Carhartt clothing, a large rental equipment center, as well as providing quality Ace Hardware products. While the perception could be that a helpful store may be more expensive, Dutch County Hardware demonstrates this to be far from true. Excellent service, helpfulness, and friendliness comes along with excellent value and competitive prices. The mission is not just to sell products, but also to focus on what the customer needs and expects, something often missed by much of the competition. Author is: Ellen Kramer of MyerstownThis book will be a comprehensive history of Myerstown and the Township. It covers countless histories of businesses, families, industries, organizations, and events. It will include maps and hundreds of photographs in color of all Myerstown properties and historical properties in Jackson Township. Layser’s Nursery, was established in 1974 by owner Jeff Layser. Jeff comes from a family of growers as his grandfather and father were growers also. Along with his wife Dolores and their children Melissa and Josh, this is a family run business. They take providing quality plants seriously. Jeff went to Penn State University to learn about plants and how to keep them healthy. Everyone now attends ongoing classes to ensure that they provide the customer with the best quality product.Layser’s grows a variety of perennials. They try to stay abreast of the latest trends of what people want to plant. Arborvitaes is a specialty, but other trees, deciduous shrubs, and dwarf evergreens round out their extensive stock of plants.
