“Case Study #5

Anne Keo, [email protected]

I have been asked to present to the 4th grade team how to teach the different

categories of quadrilaterals using Venn Diagrams.

VA Mathematics SOL

SOL 4.12 The student will classify quadrilaterals as parallelograms, rectangles, squares, rhombi, and/or trapezoids.

Important strategies to remember when addressing vocabulary instruction in the context

of a mathematics lesson.

◍ Identify vocabulary to be taught◍ Introduce vocabulary after developing understanding

of the related mathematics ideas◍ Explain the vocabulary by connecting its meaning to

students’ learning experiences◍ Have students pronounce the words◍ Write new vocabulary on a class anchor chart◍ Have students keep their own lists of math words◍ Use the vocabulary regularly◍ Encourage students to use math vocabulary in

discussions and on assignments5Source: “About Teaching Mathematics” by Marilyn Burns

Prerequisite skills for this concept.

Understanding of parallel lines

Understanding of polygons

Understanding of angles

Plan for at least 2 days/lessons

Materials:◍ Several examples of

each type of quadrilateral (paper or manipulative)

◍ Hoops, yarn circles, tape circles, or etc.

◍ Ruler, index card◍ Optional: these

response/practice sheets

Lesson 1: Identify the characteristics and attributes of various quadrilaterals

Lesson 2: Explore the relationships between quadrilaterals, compare/contrast them by attributes

1.First Lesson

Identify attributes and characteristics of various quadrilaterals

Identify the Attributes & Characteristics of Quadrilaterals

1. Provide shapes for students

Identify relevant terminology for all lessons.

2. Model for studentsUse a triangle or other polygon (not a quadrilateral) Ask what they notice about one particular shape. Write down the attributes they state.

3. Students begin their investigationIn groups or pairs, students should work together to identify the similar and different attributes of the shapes they have.

4. Record findingsProvide students various methods for recording their responses.

5. ShareHave groups share their findings with each other, record observations they hear but did not observe themselves.

Mystery shapes

6. NamesProvide students with the names of each type of quadrilateral along with corresponding picture.

2.Second Lesson

Compare and contrast the attributes and characteristics of various quadrilaterals

Compare & Contrast the Attributes & Characteristics of Quadrilaterals

1. Questions, please!Select on of the quadrilaterals from the shape set and hide it. Have groups work to ask yes or no questions that help to identify which one is hidden.

2. Go over task: Ring LabelsReview task directions. Go over Venn Diagram with a non-Geometry model to review for students. Provide students with materials.

3. Students begin their investigationIn groups or pairs, students should work together to complete the tasks and record their answers. If they feel comfortable matching names to categories, they may do so.

4. Record findingsPaper Venn Diagram

5. ShareHave groups share their findings with each other.

Assign names with the various categories and comparisons.

3.Follow-Up

Solidifying understanding and practicing knowledge and understanding of quadrilaterals

Follow-Up Activities

◍ Names & Attributes: Help students create a list of the names of quadrilaterals and their associated attributes

◍ Mystery Rings activity

Don’t Forget!

Facilitate

Allow your students to explore, they will come to the desired conclusions with your facilitation.

Anticipation

Anticipate misconceptions and how you can redirect students. Anticipate the questions you will ask to understand and guide student learning.

Process Goals

These activities cover all of the Mathematics Process Goals. Be sure your guidance enhances students’ practice of these valuable skills.

Other Lessons & Resources

◍ VDOE MIP Classify Quads

◍ Region 1 Math Collaboration Activities

◍ NCTM Article (has some higher level Geometry but the basis is good for 4th grade)
